r11e-lte + basebox2

Sat Jun 08, 2019 11:32 pm

Hi there,

I'm having trouble getting the r11e-lte to work with a basebox2. The basebox2 works fine with an external old huawei usb modem using a ppp-client interface, so in theory reception is not an issue. After removing the sim card from the usb stick and placing it in the basebox2, then switching the basebox to use pcie instead of usb (and adding a 5s init delay), the LTE interface appears. However, while all the apn settings are correct, the interface always either just shows 'searching' or 'not searching' in the registration status. It never actually connects.
Scanning yields strange results, sometimes i see various providers (including the one i want to connect to), sometimes only one provider. So i tried forcing the operator number in the settings (to 21601) but it made no difference, it never actually connects.

I've also tried to use the r11e-lte via PPP-client mode, by checking "ignore DirectIP Modem" to force a PPP-client emulation for the modem. While it shows up as usb2 as expected, it is still not connecting to any towers (i use the same PPP settings as i have when using an external 3g modem, so i know they should work). If i ask for the PPP info, the current operator lists : "ERROR: 30 (unknown)", status: unknown.
Trying to use the PPP Scanner also gives me Error: 30.

The lte- logs i get when trying to use it in native lte mode (not ppp-client):

I feel like im missing something obvious.. When i was setting up the external usb stick, i had to enter a phone number to dial (*99#), and also make sure to uncheck 'dial on demand' to force it to connect. These settings don't exist for lte-interfaces however.. Any ideas?
Could this be an antenna issue? (i have not connected an external lte antenna yet)

If you are using a mini pcie card, you need connect an antenna using the respective pigtails.

Recommended using a MIMO antenna.

Regards.

Thanks for the response! Do you think i could have damaged the card by trying it without the antennas connected?

This device might be incompatible with R11e-LTE international modem.

What? Ugh! Why would such an important piece of information be hidden in the quick guide pdf? I hope this is not true.
The whole reason i got a mikrotik lte card was to ensure compatibility with their router. Also, what does "might be" mean...

The r11e-lte page says: "Can be used with any of our products with RouterOS and miniPCIe slot (except RB800)."

Ill try with the antennas next weekend, and post my findings here.

It might get damaged ... depends how PA of Tx chains react to largely wrong impedance on its output. I think, however, that damage is not very likely. Just connect some (at least semi-proper) MIMO antenna and it should work better.

Hmm probably now I understand why a lot of people have some troubles with LTE cards on Basebox. Anyway I think that is better using this kind of cards on devices that are designed for LTE technology like LtAP, wAP LTE, RBM11G, RBM33G, etc.

Now, anyway you can try to just connect an antenna like mANT LTE 5o and see what happends.

Regards.

I have a basebox 2. While other brands of PCIe modems work as expected, I neve managed to get it started with a RB11e-LTE International version. It never passes reading the serial number on the modem. Support has no solution, so that information is correct. In a RBM33, the modem works perfectly.

I can confirm it, because in this thread, another user also have problems using LTE with BaseBox, and I'm a user of RBM33G using Mikrotik LTE cards and works perfect for me too.

Regards.

Good news! It works!

I've finally acquired the proper antenna cables and managed to connect up the r11e-lte with MIMO antennas i've installed. It seems that i'm one of the lucky ones, because the r11e-lte and basebox2 now work perfectly, and in fact i'm getting approximately twice the throughput than the best i ever got with the huawei usb stick. I'm maxing out around 60-70mb/s down, 30-40mb/s up, while the usb modem could only reach ~30mb/s down/up (using the same high gain antennas)

So this is pretty good, i was worried after the compatibility warnings... i guess this is what the "might not work" means. Its a lottery ;-)

For reference, i am running 6.43.16 (long term) on the basebox2. The r11e-lte revision is Mikrotik_CP_2.160.000_v010
