the secret is a key incentive so that there is much concurrence in the MUM

I am going from Argentina to the Orlando MUM to know about this first :D

As far as I know there was a roadmap presented at MUM in Krakow which took place in January. There are some shots from the presentation:

I think Plan B is not such a good idea, because nobody has released any `availability` details yet ;)

We will entertain in Argentina with rich meat and good wines! ;) :D
Good luck, good MUM and enjoy!

I must say i hope that availability is "very soon", as i (and i'm pretty sure i'm not the only only) do need some (much) more power than an RB532 can provide at this time.
I'd love to stick to an RB product, but if have no idea when they'll be available i'll be forced to buy something else in the meantime, i cannot answer "sorry, the new RB are not out yet" to my customers :D.

Well, it depends what is "a lot" for you :D
I'd love to go to the MUM, and i really regret missing it, but more than 2000$ just for the flight + the staying is not exactly what i would qualify as cheap :D

Here are some pic's I took.. Warning.. they are large..

RB333 and RB1000 are PPC based boards. I'm not sure about the RB600..

RB333 had 3 mini pci and 3 ethernet, and a 600mhz processor

RB1000 is a 1333mhz processor and has 4 gigabit ethernet ports, a memory slot (not sure if DDR or DDR2 or what), a CF slot, and no mini pci slots..

RB600 has 4 mini pci, not sure how many ethernet but I'll go look in a few minutes..

http://www.shelbywireless.com/pictures/ ... _MUM_2007/

enjoy but don't hold me to the spec's I'm just repeating what I've heard.

Edited and added pictures inline. You can still visit the link above to see more pictures as well as the high resolution originals..

Also Mikrotik added later on in the MUM that the packet rates quoted are for ETHERNET interfaces..

I forgot to mention the rb1000 should be released in approx 6 months..

-Gerard

Normis, I wanted the ability to set the AP/Client TX rates through RADIUS. From my testing just now all of the radius options regarding rate limiting (Ascend-Data-Rate, Ascend-Xmit-Rate, Mikrotik-Rate-Limit) only create a simple queue to limit the bandwidth and not set the ap/client tx rates. The reason I want to use the ap/client tx rates instead of queues is that queues are very cpu expensive and the ap/client tx rates are not. I explained what I was looking for to David Savage and he suggested I ask you guys directly..

As we already said - it is already there and it DOES NOT create or use queues, for the exact same reasons you describe. Please contact support to find out more.

Here's some more news from mum. These boards look awesome btw..

new router boards will only work with version 3 due to the new ppc architecture

RB333 has 64 megs of ram, 0-30volt input, 2-3x faster than RB532 at 400mhz

RB192 with 9 ethernet ports and 2 mini pci, rest is same as RB133

new daughter board for RB500/600 series has 16 ethernet ports, don't know if its just a switch or shown as 16 ethernet ports. someone asked the question and their response was "yes".. Will be interesting to see..

2 new in development products but "nothing is set in stone"
RB800 with mini pci express and mini pci slots.. "also will be very fast"
RB400 gigabit ap..

They also mentioned something about some of the new boards using a common screw layout to make things easier for us in the future..

I will try to post pictures of the slides soon as I get a chance.. (leaving for the airport in a few)

How many MINI PCI slots are we seeing on some of these boards. (does the numbering scheme still work? ie 133 has 3 ethernet, and 3 minipci)

and one of the things i was very concerned with, Any comments on the power supplies or the ability to run multipul 400mw or XR2 Cards...this is very important, as there are few PC or Boards based solutions for running several 400mw cards

Thanks Gerard and the rest for all the information posted here.

One question:

Those three antenna wireless mini-pci, ( full-size mini-pci on the rb333 board in the picture) are mimo, wireless-n cards, or what exactly they are ? (edit - Seems like a belkin something......)

( Any estimates about availability in Europe ? For the boards ?)

During the MUM the guys from Mikrotik were doing test with those cards. They said they were Wireless-N and were able to push 140 mbit between the rb333 and the rb600.. I asked who made the card and they only told me not Mikrotik..

OK, MUM is over!
So why not post the new boards specs on the web site?
Is it MT policy to keep the customers in the dark?
Can we get a simple answer on the model and brand N radio card used at MUM and what version of the OS we need to run it?

Man, I'm starting to think theres a team of 10,000 lawyers that have to check each and every answer you guys give.

The demo shown looks like the 802.11n demo is run in an indoor WLAN environment, with low gain omnis. Great stuff and am sure it'll be useful for hotspots etc. I guess in addition many people would really like to see some test results in outdoor P2P or P2MP usage with higher gain antennas. Many of the performance gains of 802.11n are from use of MIMO using the reflected signals to increase throughput, and the standard was designed for indoor use in mind. Outdoors at long distances, the RF properties are different.

Also: are ANY of the 802.11n cards capable of operating in 5GHz spectrum? All the ones I've seen are 2.4 only, which limits outdoor applications quite a bit.

MIMO is not outdoor oriented in my opinion. If you need high bandwidth, you can use Nstreme2 instead of MIMO.

MIMO itself doesn't care, but 802.11n may not work well outdoors... I dunno.

802.16 (WiMAX) has some MIMO abilities as well as other, non-WISP technologies.

a bit offtopic , but 802.11abg-n cards available very soon....
i get in a few weeks a shipment . we had already different samples here of 802.11bg and abg N versions with atheros and Ralink chipset in minipci and minipci-express format.
The 802.11n cards shown on the photos here are very first generation 802.11bg-N , they look like AR5008-3nx cards extracted from Belkin N1 routers (GEMTEK OEM Card).
the atheros AR5008-3NX chipset cards we have here now are mostly minipci Type IIIA cards, ralink RT2680 chipset cards are minipci type IIIB (all with 3x radios).

just be warned these babies need a LOT of power , if you use all 3 radios under full load and they have very high thermal emmision!

there should be also a version with 2 radios , atheros AR5008-2NX , but i havent seen any hardware yet ....

Great post Hebeda, thanks for that.
Looks like 5GHz support on the Atheros 50008XSPAN range will be useful: from their website
http://www.atheros.com/pt/AR5008Bulletins.htm
"2.300 to 2.500 GHz and 4.9 to 5.925 GHz" and no doubt there will be miniPCI and miniPCIe cards out based on the reference designs.

Did a quick Google for comments on outdoor performance. One comment here:
http://80211n.wifinetnews.com/archives/ ... speed.html

I would be really interested to hear more on outdoor performance.
Range performance might be improved by the use of "beamforming" but the question-mark I see is over throughput.
Interestingly, most WiMax vendors expect to use beamforming at the BS to improve range/coverage/throughput.

almost 20000pps, but that most likely is a limitation of the routerboards, and has nothing to do with 802.11n.

Fri Jun 22, 2007 1:26 pm

almost 20000pps, but that most likely is a limitation of the routerboards, and has nothing to do with 802.11n.
Thx Normunds.

So I assume the 73000 pps for RB333 and 120000 pps for RB600 as shown in the MUM pictures are only for the cummulative processing power on all interfaces.

From your words, I assume we should use PC based systems for higher wireless PPS.

Dunno if it is true as mentioned in this forum that the current available Atheros mini-PCI cards can deliver only 8000 pps.

you should understand that there is a difference between performance benchmark, and the capabilities of a wireless link. the benchmark results show the performance of the CPU. you are asking for the capacity of a wireless link - well, it depends on a lot of things.

Thx Normunds. We are on same track. My question has been regarding the maximum capabilities of the 802.11n radio itself in processing wireless packets per second and not internal data packets on the RB. I am also aware that the packet window/frame size can also affect pps capabilities. Yet my only concern is in using MT RBs + 802.11n for heavy VOIP networks. Like one to support public payphones.

it's impossible to reasonably test this, as first you have to use certain hardware and establish a link - both of which are performance factors.

"Are we geting close to release on the new RB333 yet? It's been "3-4 weeks"...."

I thought this was a good question. I'm waiting on the RB333 for my new AP installs. How about an answer Mikrotik? Even if it is delayed, it would be nice to know. If it is delayed, I'll plan around it....and still be a Mikrotik supporter.

Please understand, if you don't answer - people just assume the worst.

Thank you.

I think you should ask your distributor, or email our sales dept. They are not being shipped yet

None, as far as I can tell. I remain a loyal fan and user of Mikrotik product - it makes my network better. It is an excellent product and I sincerely look forward to the new Routerboards.

But I wish their public relations and marketing skills were not that of the old Soviet Union. Anything wrong? Try and make it a secret.

If the Mikrotik folks simply kept users informed of software delays, all would be OK.

Delays in delivering complex software products are not uncommon. I totally forgive that.

But announcing something, and then when forecast dates pass without any information - that is not the right way to handle this. The sooner that Mikrotik learns this is not the right way to behave the better.

All it takes is simple info. A post like "testing has revealed problems - we believe we will be three weeks late" would be fine. I can plan around that. Without any guidance, I don't know if it is days late or months.

An excellent sign of their learning would be seeing Mikrotik not delete this post.

We'll see.

As you saw in the roadmap, the dates were preliminary, and subject to change. Development is not an easy process, it's hard to tell an exact date when shipping could be started. Looks like in August we will be able to start shipping (in a week or two).

If the new boards are based on the PowerPC platform then I'd have thought they'll need to wait for the release of RouterOS V3 before they'll be available. RouterOS V3 is on RC1 at the moment. Otherwise there would be new hardware running on pre-release software which might not be the best idea.

Is 16 MB SDRAM really enough for a Routerboard like rb192. The board has 9 ethernet ports, and 2 miniPCI slots. I logged in to an access point with only one registered client, and it uses around 18 MB RAM. The only service I've enabled on this router is WDS, PPTP Server (one EoIP tunnel) and masquerading.

RB532 is 2-3 times faster than RB133. RB333 is 2-3 times faster than RB532 (all in terms of max pps)

Will the RB333 handle the full speed of the radios in turbo mode using Nstreme2?
Or, will we need to stay with the PC/P4 based solution?

On the picture of the RB1000 from the newsletter, it shows a fan vent on the top of the case. Shouldn't that be on the side?

If I am tight on rack space is this thing going to melt through my switches?

Yes I know, put it on top, but just from a practical design perspective. I've never had a piece of rack-mount hardware have a hole in the top. I can't wait for the end of a zip-tie or something fall into that.

despite my nagging and complaining. I'm very glad its coming out, the specs look great, when available I'll be purchasing a few of them.

Re: RouterBOARD 333 AND RouterBOARD 1000 - a preview ?

Mon Oct 08, 2007 8:30 pm

Correct,

Holes should be on the sides (note plural) on 1U equipment - or alternatively, the back.
Height of 1U means 40mm fans, which are not usually whisper-quiet - but then, you don't usually put 1U racks in your living room :-)

Suggest put 2x 40mm fans on *one* side of the rack, blowing the air out of 2 holes there.
2 fans means redundancy, one failed doesn't make the equipment cook or shut down.
And yes, fans do fail, even good ones. I gather the new routerboards can sense fan speed, i.e. easy to sense a failure.
Put slots the other side of the rack, so cold air is sucked into the rack through them. Optionally, some gauze/foam material to keep dust out, i.e. top filter the air.

Hope that helps -

I concur. Dual 40mm's on the side would be ideal. Its not like I'd notice or care about the increased sound in my rack. I would notice me not worrying about that piece of hardware.

No fan at all should be the target Fans and Harddisks are the
things which dies first. I would prefer a bigger housing if it helps
avoiding fans. And if a fan it should be big and regulated.
