Using a RB3011 in 2020?

Mon Mar 02, 2020 2:03 am

It's been a while since I've used a Mikrotik device (RB2011 desktop many years ago now). Looking through, it looks like the rb4011 is the latest desktop router and the 3011 is the latest rackmount router.

I'm currently using an edgemax er-4, but am thinking a 3011 will fit into the rack better (plus the screen I think looks nice), but the 4011 seems to be the better of them performance wise.

I have a 200 down 200 up connection for my internet. As I'm going through everything I'd like to be able to VLAN off some public services as well as have my internal services.

Is the 3011 able to handle 5ish VLANs and a 200/200 connection with 40 internal clients (a few cameras, smart home stuff, and basic mobile/PC's)? Or should I be looking at the 4011?

i guess the RB3011 should do this trick just fine.
i was running a RB2011 500/500 with 2/3 vlans, caps ,multiple vpns and +- 8 users.
without setup of igmp, i dont see a problem here.

The VLAN capabilities on switches varies, from one Mikrotik router to another. Take a careful look, and check if (I don't know) the RB3011 can do VLANs on hardware. Come to think of it, check to see if the RB4011 can do it too. It is not a given.

True, I guess it is. Definitely doesn't look as clean as the 3011 though ;)

Nice, was the CPU pegged constantly? I'd imagine that 2011 was chugging. :)

RB4011 is also rack-mountable and a lot more powerful than the 3011. Still, for the job you're looking for you can use both.

Cheers,

RB3011 will handle this just fine.
Just make sure that you do not create bridges voor all these VLAN's !! because then CPU will be taxed a lot.
Since 2016 my RB3011 is working flawlessly, never any issue when upgrading.
The RB3011 is becoming "an oldie" that is true...
