RB3011 keeps rebooting when ethernet 1 is connected to gigabit capable device

Fri Oct 16, 2020 5:34 pm

Hello my rb3011 keeps rebooting (not complete reboot but all lights keep blinking including LCD panel) if I plug in a gigabit capable device to ether 1 and leave it on auto negotiation. If I manually set the ether1 port to gigabit then on plugging the cable to ether 1 router shuts down until it is plugged out. Note: it happens even when no other device is plugged in to ether 1-5 including SFP, so the issue of all ports in the same switch group to have same speed and duplex is not applicable here. Latest stable version of ROS and routerboot. This issue has been existing since last year.

Did you try with different power adapter? Marginal (almost but not entirely failed) power adapter could supply some power but not enough. And ethernet port running at higher speed draws a little more power which might push power adapter over its limit ... at that point PA might drop the voltage below acceptable level for RB and RB restarts ... Another possibility is that PA is fine, but internal voltage regulation circuitry is not (failed capacitors can cause malfunction as well).

Hello. Which device exactly you are referreing as "A gigabit capable device"? I can remeber similar issue with unintentionally activated POE on the switch and RB2011.

I can use one 3011 for test, but you never write routeros and routerboot version installed on routerboard,
on (my) 6.47.10 do not do any problem

I am on latest stable release. Doesn't matter which version I am in.

On YOUR board probably are broken the components to not mix power with ether pin 4,5,7,8 because the ether1 is PoE capable and also gigabit capable,
introducing gigabit capable device close the circuit between power components, remote device, and lan switch chip
