5G hardware ideas?

Mon Nov 16, 2020 1:07 pm

Could this hardware a Mini PCIe to M.2 (NGFFF) adapter and a Quectel RM500Q-GL modem facilitate a Mikrotik RBLtAP-2HN to migrate from the R11e-LTE to 5G Cat 20?
Replacement of the R11e-LTE module? Or Insertion into the second Mini PCI-e slot?

Can this work if the right driver packages are available??

Hello,
You may achieve it on RBLtAP-2HnD, but only with RouterOS v7 and using bottom mini-PCIe slot, or using the top mini-PCIe slot and isolating the usb3 pin.

Just a quick note regarding the NGFF to MiniPCIe converter board, make sure you buy and use one that does have SIM pins connected. Some cheap ones doesn't have them connected and so modem will see no SIM card, even if it's inserted in the routerboard. Pinouts for both connectors are available so you can check the connections with multimeter just to be sure.
There are also converter boards with SIM card slot on them. These work, but it's inconvenient to disassemble everything every time you want to change SIM card.

r00t,

Thanks for the NOTE. A SIM adapter on the NGFF to mPCIe adapter is a must? Can't use the onboard SIM slots???

You will use SIM SLOT inside RouterBoard.
m.2 adapters must be a B-Key, for LTE modules, many of them have a SIM SLOT, good to have it bottom site, that with Sim slot on Module site must be unsoldered !.
HEAT should be controlled ! by AT Command you can read it, if it's hot then disable CA and next step is to disable interface.

I hope MikroTik can create for us a perfect m.2 adapter with heat dissipation :) .
