Torturing an old CCR1036

Tue Nov 24, 2020 12:04 am

I bought it back in 2013, and it's been sitting in its box since (aside from a few short trips out). So I figured I should do something with it...
Links are (relatively) large JPEGs.

Fan is an 80x80x80 San Ace counter-rotating fan, 12V (because I had it lying around, and it provides good static pressure for use with the filter). Tach outputs are plugged in, but power is from a separate DC-DC converter, as I didn't know the current limit of the board (also: a 24V fan is $70; the converter was $12). Fan speed is controlled via the knob; current range is ~.3A - 1.5A (fan maximum is 5.5A; 1.5A is loud and agressive, 5.5A is hilarious). Photo 5 LCD display is minimum speed, with fan 2 being the inlet. No internal photos, as the thing was so hard to put together I didn't care to pull it apart for a photo. And the wiring is an awful mess. It's not terribly quiet, but it's not bad, and it'll stay cool and clean (the AEM filter is good for 1-2 years between cleanings). Everyone needs a hobby (and I need a different one).

You might get better performance with a K&N filter, I use it on my BMW :-P

Bah! K&N bought AEM and discontinued half of their products. I've found the dry filters (I use AEM and Airaid) to be superior in efficiency (a bit) and dirtholding (considerably), at the expense of restriction (a bit). And I don't really want a wet filter on my computers (oil or water). Heh -- it shouldn't matter on your car, but beware of washing the filters with standard Simple Green -- the perfume is incredibly foul and persistent (lots of surface area to soak into, I guess).
