CCR2004 replacement advice

Sat Feb 13, 2021 3:49 pm

Hi guys,

I am affected by the viewtopic.php?t=164578 CCR2004 OSPF/BGP lockup and reboot issues. I made a post detailing my findings that is in an approval state.

My number one priority is replacing our x4 CCR2004's with something else. It looks like I purchased these CCR2004 Routers on the 6th of July 2020 before that thread was made (this helps clear my conscience on the decision a little). I am incredibly disappointed in these CCR2004 Routers and the only thing that makes sense to me that is causing these issues is the ARM 64bit CPU. I assume other Mikrotik CCR Routers don't have such a critical flaw right? I am thinking either the CCR1016-12S-1S+ or CCR1072-1G-8S+ might be a good option? The CCR1072-1G-8S+ is very pricey so I might go with the CCR1016-12S-1S+ once I figure out if all of my 10Gbps cross-connects will be compatible with 1000BASE-LX instead. We require Routers that can handle QinQ, OSPF, x2 Full BGP feeds, 200 ish mangle rules, x8 simple queue's for each customer and about 100Mbps - 1Gbps of traffic. From a hardware POV we are using fs.com 10GBASE-LR SFP modules (1000BASE-LX compatible) for our x6 cross-connects and 10G DAC cable for our Router <-> Router connection.

Any advice on hardware is really appreciated, I want to purchase replacement Routers ASAP so I can replace these CCR2004's.

CCR2004 - 4GB RAM
CCR1016-12S-1S+ - 2GB RAM
CCR1036-12G-4S - 4GB RAM
CCR1036-12G-4S-EM - 8GB RAM
CCR1072-1G-8S+ - 16GB RAM

It looks like the CCR1016-12S-1S+ only has 2GB of RAM so I have doubts it will be able to handle x2 Full BGP Tables. System < Resources on our CCR2004 running x2 Full BGP Tables shows Free Memory: 1164.5 MiB and Total Memory: 1792.0 MiB. These numbers aren't making 100% sense to me since I thought the CCR2004 has 4GB of RAM? Shouldn't it be Total Memory: 4000.0 MiB?

Since I know 4GB of RAM is able to handle x2 Full BGP tables I am thinking the CCR1036-12G-4S or CCR1036-12G-4S-EM might be the way to go.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, cheers.

CCR2004 needs RouterOS 7 to use the full 4GB of RAM. With ROS6 it can only use 1792MB. So if that has been enough for you, then the 1016 should work fine (in terms of RAM).

Thank you very much for explaining that, I think you just saved me a few hundred or thousand dollars :) I saw your post on the viewtopic.php?f=3&t=164578&p=843735#p843735 thread and I would be very interested to know what RouterOS version you are running. I am thinking of changing my design to be RIP/BGP or Static Routes/BGP instead of OSPF/BGP if it is OSPF that is causing the issue. In the log messages it seems to be OSPF that is dying first before all of the BGP goes down so I think you are onto something.
