Fans on MikroTik Cloud Router Switch 354-48G-4S+2Q+RM - volume level?

Sun Jun 13, 2021 3:48 pm

I noticed that MikroTik Cloud Router Switch 354-48G-4S+2Q+RM has three fans and thus will of course generate a bit of noise, but how much?

Intended usage is Switch and nothing else.

BTW is not ROS overkill on a Switch?

It probably is. But some people adore CLI for management and SNMP for supervision.

Personally I don't have any CRS354 ... but since it's actively cooled and given the diameter (and RPM) of those fans I guess I wouldn't like to have that beast anywhere near my bed nor living room sofa (nor normal office working space). And I guess closing it in some sealed mini rack would work against the need of device to be cooled.

It's a rack-mount device and as such it's usually mounted in a noisy environment (server rooms tend to be like that), in that case its own noise would be a feature fitting the envirionment ;-)

My racks are rather quiet. Got two. A mini rack 6U on top of the house, in a space just under the roof that is somewhat insulated from the rest of the house but gets HOT in summer. If the 354 is noisier than a small vacuum cleaner or something like that it would not be possible to place it there. Decibel please?

My other rack is in my garage where I have a 42U full cabinet with 4 servers, 2 homebrew and 2 HPE Proliant DL380 G7 and the latter do make some noise but no more than about 40-45Decibel.
As a comparison a vacuum cleaner makes above 65 Decibel and an old HPE 48P switch with fans I have lying around makes about 45...
(all decibels measured at close range with a phone app, not professional gear)

If you tell me the App and you don't need any complex setup I can test this in a few days. Of course differences in phone microphones and environment noise will still apply.

I used an app called "Sound Meter" on my Galaxy Note 10.

This one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ic.decibel

Thanks! :)

SwOS is very basic

RouterOS gives you the ability to take advantage of all the features on the switch and a powerful management

In my case i use RouterOS in switches because this features:
Winbox
More Versatile Webfig
RoMON
Tools Graph
Tools Ping
Tools Telnet
MSTP
Full management Using Serial Console when needed
Can configure more users with different profiles

Ok, so i made few measurements and for better comparability used two apps - Sound Meter (Abc) and Sound Meter (Splend) on OP3:
Baseline phone reference, quiet bedroom: Abc - 5.3min 31.5avg 53.0max; Splend - 32min 44avg 56max
CRS354 off, office background* reference: Abc - 26.1min 40.9avg 53.2max; Splend - 44min 55avg 71max
CRS354 at full speed**, walking around: Abc - 32.4min 43.9avg 54.5max; Splend - 48min 57avg 70max

* - AC fans, chatter, desktop computers, printers etc. CRS354 on a desk 1m in front of me, powered off.
** - 7500RPM with 65C reported on two S+RJ10s and no other load 1m from front, then rear. Just turning it on makes it go to 4000RPM for some time then wander between long 0RPM periods with shorter 6000RPM (could hear, couldn't measure above background noise). IMHO in quiet environment it would become noticeable above 5000RPM and very obvious around 6500RPM. It seems to hover around 5..6kRPM if nothing pushes it too hard. Honestly unless you run it full load, placement will make biggest difference, the noise is very directional (mostly comes from rear).

Measurement screenshots with graphs: https://imgur.com/a/F5fKQaY

Hope this is of any help, but i must admit i didn't have a good measurement environment and the phone readings are very approximate.
