Tiny RouterOS capable device

Thu Aug 05, 2021 9:39 pm

Is anyone aware of a small PoE powered RouterOS capable device? Ideally the device would have 3-5 ports (so 2-4 usable) and be similar in dimension to a Raspberry Pi.

The hAP mini is good, but I don't need any wireless capabilities - just looking for VLAN, firewall and QoS capabilities in a tiny edge router.

Thanks!

hEx lite or hEx classic could be your ticket, as they've got more RAM and processing power. Or, if you need something even faster, a regular hEx has a beefy CPU and is still cheap.

Thanks for the response! I actually have a hEX now, but both the hEX lite and hEX are 113x89x28mm. I was wondering if something smaller exists, more along the line of the dimensions 90x60x20mm.

At that size - no. Not without looking at the bare boards and finding/making your own enclosure.
That said - if hAP Mini serves your purpose - just turn the wifi off. The standard hEX case is used by many models and is their default 'compact' case across a lot of ranges without going to the mini's like mAP and hAP mini etc. and they generally serve a more specific purpose and hAP mini is the only one with more than 2 ports.

I think I'll pick one up and try it out with a PoE splitter, thanks for the suggestion @joegoldman!

In theory it should be possible to use a x86-based mini board with the x86 version of RouterOS.
Not sure if it would be a wise thing to pursue...

Note that a considerable piece of the total size would be taken by the 5-way RJ45 connector.
