That’s not what is advertised on the downloads page. It indicates all CCR2004’s can run ROS 6.48.4 !

Read the product pages:
  • CCR2004-1G-12S+2XS - Size of RAM in RouterOS v6 1792MB ECC / RouterOS v7 4GB ECC
    CCR2004-16G-2S+ - RouterOS (v7 only)
You have a CCR2004-16G-2S+ so it's RouterOS v7 only.

[sarcasm] So when I install v7 on a CCR2004-1G-12S-2XS, little Latvian gremlins sneak in with additional RAM? And do they take it away if I downgrade to v6 again? But chips on board say they're 4GB all the time? [/sarcasm]

Maybe so, but it "DOESN't" say that on the downloads page !! Overly cryptic !!

yea.. i gamble choosing this ccr, with idea that i can downgrade it to v6, so i can still use it for production, at least until finish doing research (the differential between v6 and v7 is wide !! ) and more stable coming

Maybe so, but it "DOESN't" say that on the downloads page !! Overly cryptic !!

The fact is that it is not possible to downgrade ROS version below the factory installed. On any ROS device. It is true that this fact is not printed in large friendly letters on every device box, but this fact still remains. Now, theoretically one could purchase an old model (e.g. RB951G) which comes factory installed with 6.48.4. It is not possible to downgrade that particular device to 6.47.10 even though that device model is around since 6.2x.y (or even earlier, I don't remember exactly).

The principle is exactly the same with CCR2004-16G-2S+, the only thing bothering you is that factory installed software is v7. While I can agree that v7 is more a pre-beta software than release-ready and that MT should not be selling v7-only devices, this doesn't change the facts about downgrading.
If you did not check product page (and notice it's a v7 only device) prior to purchasing it, then no amount of finding of excuses will help you rationalize your decision.

BTW, it's my subjective view, but the way I read the list of devices on download.mikrotik.com is more of an information which platform files are appropriate for my device, not as guarantee that I can install that particular version on my device.

Yea, sounds more like lawyer speak than it should. You say “More of an information”! That’s not much information to me. The manufacturer should know this, and do better. That’s like saying if you buy a 50K$ car, there’s no guarantee that it will start till they get all the engineering right. They should do better and people, like you should not make excuses for them. That’s simply bad product support. 😤

Sorry but I didn't intend on getting the CCR2004-16G-2S+. I didn't know the device existed when I orded 4 more CCR2004-12S+ and the salesman didn't
know he had them in the inventory and shipping sent them. So, we're trying to make the best of a bad situation. Had the factory loaded them with a later V6 like they do with the CCR2004-12S+ I'm pretty sure they would have worked fine but they didn't . Unfortunately V7 OSPF doesn't seem ready for use. Now what the factory needs to do is take functional 6.48.x code base, tweek it so the router thinks it's 7.0.99 (or some such) and let it load so we all can go down the road as the 7.x codebase matures to the point of being usable in a production environment.

I know that for the last 10 years the ROS 7 is a mirage...
I bought two 2004 16G, both come with 7.0.4 "stable".
they just rebooted on the bench when I pasted the old config on it, section by section...
I upgraded one to to 7.1RC (lastest) and they did the same.
just rebooted on the bench multiple times :D
