Help! RB230 - unable to boot ROS from CF card

Mon Jan 07, 2008 11:32 am

Folks,

I'm struggling to boot my RB230 from the CF card.
Installed ROS using NetInstall (Etherboot), have tried both 2.9.50 and 3.0rc13.
The router recognizes the CF card and appears to install ROS properly, but I'm unable to boot.
As CF is recognized, why isn't it listed as a boot option in BIOS?

As the RB installs on the CF card it should be able to boot on it?
Or is booting only possible from an IDE interface? If yes, what is CF usable for?

Anyone?

Well, it is actually closed....:-(

RB230 is new to me, I need a confirmation that it is able to boot from CF!

If all the installation using Netinstall goes fine, then the card must be ok? Then, why won't it boot from it, and how can it help repeating the procedure on another CF card?

Any tips? I don't like the idea of adding a "real" IDE HDD, and if CF booting is possible, buying IDE flash should not be necessary.

Sorry for nagging you, but as this is a board still delivered by MT there must be somebody within MT or among users that has been playing around with it enough to be able to help?

Unfortunately I'm stuck on this... :(

You have to select IDE to use Either IDE of CF. there is no separate selection, sorry for confusion :)

Thank you Normis.

As I wrote, installing ROS on the CF goes all fine, but it won't boot from it, despite JP2 is closed.
Can you please comment on the console output above?

Trying another CF was mentioned. Is it possible that one functioning card is bootable, while another is not?

Yes, you can see it close to the end of the console output, I selected "i" for IDE and then "x" to reboot. However the board (bios) does not recognize the CF.

If you have a spare CF of another kind/brand, please try that and see if it works with that one.

Ordered another card (Lexar, first one was Twinmos) and tried it today, but same result.

I'm getting kind of frustrated now.

Is there anybody out there that can confirm that booting from CF is possible?
Have you tried it yourselves?
Something I have overlooked?

Please somebody, otherwise my new RB230 will end in the scrapyard, I don't think it deserves so... :(

Of course, we have loads of these devices and they all work from CF only. We even installed a new one just now, just to test this.

So you tried all jumpers and all BIOS settings? Did you try a laptiop IDE drive just to see if it can boot at all?

Re: Help! RB230 - unable to boot ROS from CF card

JP1 - Open : Normal operation (otherwise the RB would reboot!)
JP2 - Closed : CF is Master ATA
JP3 - 1-2 : Normal operation (otherwise CMOS would be cleared!)
JP4/5 - 1-2 : Power jack (otherwise the RB would not start, no PoE attached)
JP6 - 1-2 : MiniUPS deselect

As far as I understand the only jumper in question is JP2, and it is closed (tried it open as well - no luck). Agree?

Have not been able to try 2.5" IDE, have no 44-pin flat cable.
But is it very likely that this would work as CF doesn't?

Hi Bomber67! Where you see JP6 jumper on RB230rev3. ?! This jumper present only on first rev. RB200. What actually RB you have?!

I haven't checked whether JP6 is there.
Actually, as a response to normis' last post I was iterating through all the jumpers mentioned in the user manual to prove that no jumper except JP2 can possibly be the reason for my problem.
For several of the jumpers a wrong position would simply keep my board from booting at all, that's my point.

aaa: Have you (bad) experience with this board?

Maybe some hardware malfunction can be reason your problem. Have you possibility swap your RB200 with otherone?About experience I consider RB200 like one of the most successful project. In few places it work fine 2-3 years and not need upgade to something else.

I have to agree. The RB230 is one of my favorite routerboards due to its versitility and reliability. We have had four in operation for more than three years now. Only had to replace one due to lightning damage. And yes, we boot to CF on all of them.
