manual cli installation of ros 3.3 on rb153 ?

Wed Feb 20, 2008 1:56 pm

Hi there,

having my Rb153 sitting here - I wonder how I can try to reinstall ros 3.3 on it.
Have tried ros 2.9.29, 2.9.50 and 3.3, after that checked debian and openwrt (both of the later ones - I can still put on it have setup an own/decent tftp-server etc. doing the job well over bootp).

However - I wanted to try some more stuff with openvpn tunnels under ros 3.3 - but can't put the ros on the device anymore.
The netinstall does not work under windows XP or Linux + Wine. IMHO - I'd need a tftp-boot kernel and rootfs I can dump on the NAND and similar for the FS ...

Anyone has done that here ?
I feel more confident doing that through CLI than through any GUI tool that provides no debug/error messages at all ...
Any hints ? I could also do it through a CF Card IMHO - just have to put the right image on it.

The netinstall does not work under windows XP
what do you mean? just set the BIOS to boot from network, enable the same in the netinstall application, choose packages and install
No answer to your question? How to write posts

Hmmm... Here is what I did - followed the example at your site:
1. netinstall started.
2. Net Booting -> Boot Server enabled / IP in Local LAN assigned (10.0.4.13)
3. Set router to boot ...
3. Select router through MAC in netinstall
4. Select Software Package -> RouterOS for routerBoard RB5xx & RB1xx
and click install
5. Waiting - 5secs later - I have a ready again in netinstall for the MAC Address showing up again.

Router Serial terminal side:
Select boot device:
 * e - boot over Ethernet
n - boot from NAND, if fail then Ethernet
c - boot from CompactFlash only
1 - boot Ethernet once, then NAND
2 - boot Ethernet once, then CompactFlash
o - boot from NAND only
   b - boot chosen device
your choice: b - boot chosen device
trying bootp protocol... OK
Got IP address: 10.0.4.13
resolved mac address 00:16:CB:A6:89:EB
*transfer started ..................... transfer ok, time=3.02s
setting up elf image... OK
jumping to kernel code
Welcome to MikroTik Router Software remote installation
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to abort

mac-address: 00:0C:42:0B:34:71
mac-address: 00:0C:42:0B:34:72
mac-address: 00:0C:42:0B:34:73
mac-address: 00:0C:42:0B:34:74
mac-address: 00:0C:42:0B:34:75

software-id: 7X0F-3TT key:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX<invalidated Key>XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Waiting for installation server...
Note - that when I do all that through my own tftp/dhcp-servers, it workswithout an issue.
Of course - I have deactivated the local bootp/tftp/dhcp servers before using netinstall.
I even booted into windows to make sure nothing there is giving me any issues.
Even removed the Windows Firewall etc.

Any hints ?
BTW: A ctrl-alt-delet in the serial terminal does not work ;)

FYI - software versions:
Netinstall: Mikrotik Route Installer v3.3
Router RB153:
RouterBOOT booter 2.12
RouterBoard 153
CPU frequency: 175 MHz
Memory size: 32 MB

I have also formatted the NAND before, resetted the RouterBoot config etc. - changed nothing.
When launching the install - through linux/openwrt - the LED indicator of the ethernet port flasshes showing traffic.
With netinstall - nothing - except some eventual keepalive packets going onto it.

Ok - fixed it.
netinstall works - if you don't have a intelligent switch hocked in between.
Seems some of the security settings of that switch prevented some protocols to go over - hence performing the installation.
After plugging the network side into a Dumb switch - everything started working.

Sorry for the hassle.

Why have the switch at all? I ask this as I am dealing with a similar issue that I have been unable to resolve yet. I have a RB 111/112 that I have tried to upgrade via NetInstall and it sees it just fine, but the upgrade doesn't begin.
