rb600 make reboot every day

Tue Mar 04, 2008 6:11 pm

Hello

I have one high performance ap - rb600.
My throughput:
 received-packets-per-second: 2477
     receive-drops-per-second: 0
     received-bits-per-second: 16.4Mbps
      sent-packets-per-second: 2404
    transmit-drops-per-second: 0
         sent-bits-per-second: 7.0Mbps
Configuration:
4 x Winston CM9 5GHz nstreme
48V 0.7A power adapter injected into power plug (not POE)
20 stations. Stations works on RouterOS 2.9.x and 3.3

I instaled this board yesterday, and higist uptime I ever seen was 18h.

You (Mikrotik Men) now something about this error?

In my log I seen something like this:

00:00:05 system, error, critical router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer

Autosupout.rif file doesn't maked! Only reboot.

On MT 3.4 is the same. I maked supout.rif file and send it to support@mikrotik.com

The same for me, i didn´t upgrade to 3.4, just using 3.3 with the same problem, but when the unit reboot autosupout.rif is not generated. My watchdog conf is very common.

watch-address: none
watchdog-timer: yes
no-ping-delay: 5m
automatic-supout: yes
auto-send-supout: no

Hi
I have number of RB600's that all do a strange thing
If i change any item on the wireless adapters then router reboots.
Ie change frequency change country even if i disable or enable wifi card RB600 reboots.
On workbench with little or no through traffic the problem does not occur but if i push lots of traffic
problem occurs on workbench as well.
No autosupout.rif is made.
I am using 2x xr5 radios and 1x r52h in 1 of the RB600's
in the others i have 2x r52h and 1 xr5 or sr5
I have changed POE units with diffrent brands and sizes no change

Hello all ,
If you use AR5212/5213 miniPCI cards try moving to AR5413/5414.
I had the same problem with RB333 and now I'm having it with RB600.
Max uptime is 6 hours.
I think MikroTik should for sure do something because I'm starting to lose clients...it's not nice when clients star calling with reason too manu disconnects...

i have only R52 in my setup, that can not be the only reason for the "reboot" issue that it does not like certain cards.

I was talking to patt[the cm9 guy]
RB600 has the reboot problem as told with whatever card you use/the high load is the problem/
both boards have problem with AR5212/5213 cards.
I used the PC-684HA with RB333 and it performed the same way as patt said, then I put it on the RB600 -> exactly the same issue.
So I changed the cards[this means I have to put away my brand new AR5213 cards] with r52h and now the problem with changing frequencies , or anything else cannot be seen...but still high load is a big[HUGE] problem[on RB600...RB333 seems to perform well for now...]

I have rb333 with CM9 too. I use only CM9 cards on base stations.
Why I must replace my own card to Mikrotik R52?

My rb333 has 7 days uptime after upgrade (3xCM9).

no, the problem reports are also from Rb600 with no cards in them. But RB300 doesn't have any problem, I don't see why it's mixed into this thread

it's not said that you should upgrade to r52h...there are plenty of AR5413 a/b/g cards :)

normis,
Please respond if this is hardware or software problem to know what should I do...
if this is software I shall wait for the next release but if it's hardware I must rapidly replace the board.

did this problem only appear recently after some upgrade, or was it rebooting from the start? where did you run the Btest from/to? We can't repeat it.

It appeared in v3.3 and now in v3.4.
In v3.3 rebooted because of ar5213 card/watchdog timer reboot or kernel panic/
in v3.4 there is no particular reason..or it's not logged, it just reboots and my PPPoE clients can't connect for 5 minutes because of radius timeout.

strange things with rb600 :D
i had on rb600 without wireless nic's mt 3.3 it reboot's after minute or two,
i wanted to make clean config and send it to mt support
so i upgraded to 3.4 and reset to default,
first strange thing was that in my ethers dissapear ether3 and appear ether4?!

i make my config again first it reboot after 10mins (no supout were generated)
after that first reboot it's running for 45 mins without reboot and still running...

EDIT
after an hour it reboot again in next 20 min it reboot three times,
it didn't make auto suoput, i make it by hand
sending it to support

The stablest ROS version for me was 3.0, this one give me 1 day and a few hours uptime.
Just for testing I invert the wlan mode now the unit that constantly reboots it is a station-wds, before that it was the ap-bridge. I will keep you informed guys!

Re: rb600 make reboot every day

is there a way to pinpoint the problematic boards to a certain range of serial numbers ? i NEED something with 4+ radios working soon. if i knew the range of SN effected then i could place an order making sure its not from that range. i have done intensive testing this morning and given Uldis the results. i have NO problem reproducing my problem in our board, Uldis can't reproduce it on the board he has there. so there MUST be some boards okay i believe ?

No success with this change, the unit keep rebooting once a day, also I disable the watchdog timer and the log message says this "router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer", dont know how this happens if its disabled.

Without knowing about the apparent issues with the RB600 I replaced a RB230 (4cards) and RB532(3cards) with a RB600 and RB604 daughterboard on Saturday.

I replaced almost all the cards as well (old Senao and CM9s). I now have 5x RB52H and 2x RB52 installed in the unit. It is being powered by direct power with a 24V (50W) supply.

After about an hour the unit rebooted. I turned down the TX power on the RB52H cards that did not require the high power (Default seems to run at max power). The unit has a 3 day uptime so far. Admittedly it does not transfer a lot of data. Peaks of about 2MBps...Maybe a touch more.

I have to date not experienced the problems listed here (unless the first reboot was due to this). I will probably run a bandwidth test through the unit sometime tonight and check to see if it dies.

Tested RB600 on ethernet ONLY with 2 bgp sessions 2xVLAN and simple firewall.
It seems to be stable for now.

support, any progress ? can you give advice under which circumstance the reboots occur ? it seems to be a wide spread phenomenon with the RB600 and others seem to have no trouble at all !

please come forward with proposals how to avoid the problem !!!!!!

desperately waiting for a solution.

I just reported one of my RB600 came in with a DOA POE. The board worked with DC jack.. but this board was destined for the top of a tower.

Now the hassle of RMA. *sigh*

today I witnessed 2 reboots of the routerboard 600.
I've already sent supout.rif and hope that this problem will be solved as soon as possible.

I test ROS 3.5 and the problem persist. I run bandwidth test (between two RB600) over ethernet interface and only one RB600 rebooting without reason.

exchange the power supply and I continue having the same behavior, the same RB600 has problems...

I test run bandwidth en diferent routerboard, but always the same RB600 has problems....

may be the problem is in the hardware, it is strange (to many RB600 with same diagnostic) but possible.

I just received 3 x RB600 I purchased for testing. It will be interesting to see if they have this same issue.

Unit 1 is being tested now, it is quite hot here at the moment so it will be a good test.

I am running via POE using the Mikrotik supplied 48volt PSU and POE injector.

The lack of interest by Mikrotik on this issue is rather disturbing.
Today I am removing the 1st of of my 6 RB600's and replacing them with

Re: rb600 make reboot every day

On MT 3.5 I see double throughput.
For example not 10Mbits but 20Mbits.

uptime rb600 is 16h - we will see :)

Re: rb600 make reboot every day

My first test board has been up for around 15 hours now with no problems and some decent load on it. One thing I noticed is that it is running VERY hot. The CPU heatsink is quite hot, and the little silver cover (voltage regulator?) is so hot I cannot touch it.

The unit is mounted on a bench with plenty of air around it so should not be as hot as it is, especially with only a single R52.

Maybe this is what is causing the rebooting issues for other people ??

nz_monkey, i have done testing for hours and did also measure the temp of the CPU heatsink. mine did not get hotter than 40 degree celsius on the bench test with about 30mbit/s total throughput. i did notice the high temp of the transformer cover (silver thing) too. i do not believe in a software issue anymore. i think its hardware, maybe a bad batch or so since others do NOT have the same problem.

Dear Mikrotik Team, it's possible to give a reply about this? My time to RMA the boards is very short, then i need to know that to do.

I'm really having problems with the use of the RB600 boards.
All my RB600 boards restarts constantly.
Someone has the solution for that problem?

Temporary solution:
Remove the built-in cooler over the processor(* YOU WILL LOSE YOUR WARRANTY *) and attach *radiator*(1) with some decent thermal paste/I recommend arctic silver 5/ , do the same on the nand and test.
*(1) - I used radiator from broken P II processor on slot 1.

Yes diegotormes, i full agree with you. The problem is that beta products are "use at your own risk", but the RB600 are not sold with this warning. The nda politics doesn't help too.

now, new RB600 has arrived......

i have started doing the same tests as i did before, just started about 30 minutes ago. the first thing i noticed is that the transformer with the silver cover does not get as hot as it did on the other RB600 i had. i use a regulated linear power supply with 24V DC @ 380mA with 4 R52 active and associated to an AP.

i will write again later to share my experience with the new RB600

Re: rb600 make reboot every day

Fri Mar 28, 2008 1:39 pm

oh boys.......

2 hrs no reboot, thats the best i ever got. now i thought, well, connect the RB564 daughterboard. all works fine until i disable all wireless interfaces. i then got a kernel panic dump on my serial console and the board is unstable since. it again reboots after only a few seconds. i have 2 R52 and 2 CM9 on the daugtherboard. i had again 24DC from a regulated power supply @ about 650mA on the power jack (not PoE).

MT......can we at some point count on a stable system ? this is getting more and more like a "hardware kindergarten".

so now you leave us with no RB500 and no working alternative.

to stick to the protocol i send support files and the kernel dump via email to support.

edit: i am using ROS3.6 and bios 2.12

Re: rb600 make reboot every day

Fri Mar 28, 2008 2:36 pm

right.....

upgraded to FW 2.13

now i can shutdown all wireless interfaces but if i shutdown all ethernet interfaces but ether1 i get an "Oops" on the console. the board is not rebooting at this stage, just get the "Oops" on the console. if i now enable the interfaces again in winbox they show a enabled in the list, but the wireless interfaces show in the configuration window in the bottom line disabled. the ethernet links show enabled in the list as well but winbox does not show a link status. on the console i cant login anymore, i just see the login prompt and if i plug in a cat5 cable in ether3 and the furthest left port on the daughterboard i get this on the console (plugged in and unplugged, plugged in again):

MikroTik 3.6
MikroTik Login: eth2: Link autonegation speed 100M bps full duplex
eth8: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0xC1E1
eth8: link down
eth2: failed to detect cable link.
eth2: Link autonegation speed 100M bps full duplex
eth8: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0xC1E1

basically the system is still unusable. if i reboot i can activate the wireless interfaces and the ethernet interfaces show up with links status on the connected ports. but it now keeps rebooting again.

here the "Oops" from the above description.

upgraded too,

for now it looks great, but there is one problem with mt 3.5 and 3.6
counters from ethernet ints show strange thruoughput

ether 1 show tx 14mbps rx 55mbps
ether 2 show tx 28mbps rx 30mbps
at the same time

i set up simple routing
traffic get int thru ether2 and pass out ether1
so trafiic has to be the same

Is this problem caused by upgrading past 3.0 or does it only occur on some boards? I have more than a few of these that don't seem to have this problem, but I don't think any of them are upgraded past 3.0.

I'm interested to see more reports from those that have upgraded to the new BIOS.

Hi,

I hadn't pay attention to uptime before, but at this day i can say that our RB600 is up since 16 days. I don't have upgrade BIOS and i will not.

Image

We had 2 Ubiquity SR2 radios and about 27 clients on this AP.
This is the global traffic on this AP:

I let you know if some reboot problem occur,

that is true, i got my rebooting RB600 replaced by one from a later shipment to my supplier. even without the 2.13 bios it did not reboot. i was looking very carefully at the PCB but have not noticed any difference. i certainly have not read all the values on the tiny SMD resistors and stuff. but i did not notice any obvious change. the only noticeable difference was that the metal shield on the transformer is by far cooler than on the older rebooting board. the temperature on the CPU heat sink got up to 42 degree celsius just like on the older RB600.

well it's quite simple,
put firmware onto root directory on rb
and then from console type
/system routerboard upgrade

and then reboot

I must say that we are in a cold environnement, i don't know if this is a temperature issue, but the board is outdoor at -20 Celcius. I don't want to wait for summer to know if the board would reboot, can we get more detail about the reboot issue from MT ?

My RB 600 done the same, but it seems to happen on station side.

I'm on ROS 3.7, BIOS 2.13 uptime 4h. Had 8d uptime before last (thought it fixed the reboot problems)

While on AP side, i have 8d uptime since BIOS Upgrade . Had experienced none reboot problem (even before BIOS upgrade).

Just upgraded to 2.14 hope that fix the problem.

Everytime the RB rebooted it shows this:
jan/01 07:00:05 system, error, critical router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog tim

Hi,

I'm having this reboot by watchdog timer problem with a RB600 we installed on monday (RouterOS 3.14 and firmware 2.17). It has 2 XR5. And it is powered by a midspan.

According an e-mail from Mikrotik support, it could be a power problem. But I really doubt it is the reason because there was a RB500R5 with one R52 radio, conected to this same midspan port. Reading these posts a question comes to my mind: Is it possible that there are still some problems with RB600 pending to be solved?

Best regards.

Well, I just found that the Midspan maximum power per port is 14,5W. And I think the RB600 with 2 XR5 must be arround 20W. So the low power can be the cause in this case. I'll try with an stand alone power supply and observe it.

Regards.

With a separated power supply, the problem persists. Now It has been running for 22 hours and then rebooted.

I can't say for sure if the problem has been solved yet. But we replaced the RB600 for a new one 23 hours ago and it is running since then. With the old one the maximum running time was 22 hours.

As I said it is still soon to say that the problem is solved and that the problem was the replaced RB600 hardware.

you guys should pull the boards out and check for overheating signs , my board was fried when i looked at it near the silver heatsink, it had white burn marks and looked like stuff oozing from the solder joint near the chip

I can see those marks on a brand new RB600 inside the plastic bag, so I'm not sure if it is overheating. If it is, it has happened during tests at the assembly.

We have the new RB600 running for 314 hours now. So I can say the problem is something on the old board. But what is wrong? It has been running at the office without radio cards for days without rebooting. We will try now with the same radios to see if the board reboots.

To make an update on this topic.
I have the same problem on one RB600 with fw 2.15, RouterOS 3.10, without any minipci.
Yesterday I updated to the latest firmware I found (2.16) and the latest RouterOS (3.15) and the problem persists. Three or four times per day, the rb600 is rebooted unexpectedly.

I have an RB 600 with the same problem - it randomly reboots. The log reports that the board was rebooted by the watchdog timer but the timer is not enabled. It has an RB 604 daughterboard with two SR5's, one SR2 and an R52H installed. No cards installed in the RB600 itself. Now running 3.13 and still not stable. It shows one bad block on the Flash as it has since it was first booted. Can a Bad block cause it to lock up ????

routerboard: yes
model: "600A"
serial-number: "189801FDAD4C"
current-firmware: "2.16"
upgrade-firmware: "2.16"
baud-rate: 115200
boot-delay: 2s
boot-device: nand-if-fail-then-ethernet
enter-setup-on: any-key
cpu-frequency: 400MHz
boot-protocol: bootp
enable-jumper-reset: yes

Sent Supportout.rif too.

Does someone resolve this problem? I have same problem on RB600 and RB600A and if I disable watchdog RB600 breeze and the only way is to reboot it.

I hope that Mikrotik resolve this problem because I have 20 routerboard RB600.

I have just tried firmware 2.13 and all routeros version.

regards

Re: rb600 make reboot every day

I'm really having problems with the use of the RB600 boards.
All my RB600 boards restarts constantly.
Someone has the solution for that problem?
Temporary solution:
Remove the built-in cooler over the processor(* YOU WILL LOSE YOUR WARRANTY *) and attach *radiator*(1) with some decent thermal paste/I recommend arctic silver 5/ , do the same on the nand and test.
*(1) - I used radiator from broken P II processor on slot 1.
!!! NOTE !!!
You are doing this ON YOUR OWN RISK!
Hmm this should not be the practice. I should be able to RMA a unit that I tried to cool down using conventional cooling methods like these. Anyone RMA'd a a RB he tried to cool down? MikroTik, What's the official statement on this?

If you have a problem with hardware overheating, inspect if the cooler is properly attached and email support with pictures (if anything interesting can be seen). support will then instruct you how to proceed. if a radiator is needed, and support tells you so, you will not lose warranty

My friend we need to make a FAQ with all these forum questions and answers! New customers will find it much much easier and faster to solve problems without having to go through the entire forums up and down all week long.

There is only one FAQ question you need - if you bought something, and it doesn't work - ask the seller for help or repair :)

Yah but the problem is that the seller wont do rma without purchasing another one, and like we are dumb enough to buy another one and have a chance on that one going bad also. Its not fair what practices are being used for rma, if we bought it from a reseller then we have to deal with them on the rma issue and they wont rma without buying a new one , at 200+ dollars for a board that just reaks of a scam. Please try and change the rma policy its not fair we have to buy a new one instead of just replace it . My rb600 was less than a week old has recognizable heat marks on the board , i feel like i got shipped crap and i cant even return it. They say thier process for doa is the same as if its defective also, and the distributer was streakwave located in san jose in ca. Really good people but this policy really blows and kinda makes us not want to use the MT with policies like that. No offense but resellers should be required to take in RMA doa boards without having to purchase a new one, ty for the $200 dollar stick up my arse..

Btw to everyone with one of these, this is a HARDWARE not software problem dont waste your time like i did going thru test after test to realize the board was pussing stuff from the main hit sink that everyone has listed here..

Mt support as always has been very helpfull onthis up to the point of saying i cant send it back to them and i have to go thru my distributor , which of course is saying i cant rma this without buying another one , and im like ya right

Don't give up. Call the reseller. Try to talk to the person with the biggest rank there, maybe even the owner. Push again, explain again, explain that you have talked to people and that the correct way is to proceed with RMA/warranty without the invented need to buy again. And just tell them (try to convince them) that if they are a correct company everyone including you would again buy from them. But if they try to be sneaky, they can forget about you as a customer ever again, since you simply do not have the time for BS. Right? Right. If they still deny, which is not correct, another option is for you to pay for transport of the old RB back to the original distributor...

Ya the funy thing is i spend around 500-1000 per month with this company , and have a good relationship with them, they tout this as its thier policy because of how mikrotik treats them on thier rma side. Ya i know i cant send it back to latvia , talked to the tech support who told be that point blank, i am kinda wondering how come you guys dont warrant your products direct to the consumer, expecially on boards that have known problems like the rb600. No offense but i would be ashamed putting out a product that so many of us have complained about and the only answer is deal with our reseller. But hey i understand policies are ther for a reason, but you still have to deal with the backlash of your policies

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction

Maybee finding a diff reseller or diff product with better warranty is the answer!!!

However it works out, it ends up as Mt making and selling a defective product and then not haveing the problem fixed , pissing people off and that lands right back with you guys.

Who are we upset with A: The resller who wont rma without another purchase of a like product.

Or B: The manufacturer who made the defective item to begin with.

THanks for the help on this one. It will go in the books

No idea but its sad to know that you cant even go back to the manufacter in my case without spending another 200 dollars , so basically im screwed outa 200 bucks if i dont want to fork up another 200 to buy a new one and wait for rma status to get a credit.

Hi all,

We got the exactly same problem. Our RB600 reboot everyday by watchdog timer.

ROS 3.18, upgrade to 3.20 does not make the differents.
The bootloader is 2.18
> /sy ro pr
routerboard: yes
model: "600A"
serial-number: "1AB101FD6979"
current-firmware: "2.18"
upgrade-firmware: "2.18"

if watchdog is disabled, the unit will totally stop responding on next minutes/ hours.
The longest uptime is 8 hours with ROS 3.16

supout.rif send to support last night and no reponse received yet till now.
