RB450G upgrade failed with ROS 4.1 from 3.30

Mon Oct 19, 2009 8:21 am

I have only upgraded 2 RB450G routers and one of them worked fine and the other resulted in long night to replace at tower site. After the upgrade, as soon as the RB booted with two beeps and starting services in console window all ethernet lights began to flash on and off at the same time and it stops there non operational and non-responsive.

Only net install back to 3.30 let it operate again. Net install back to 4.1 produced same results as above and did not work. Net install back to 3.30 and its working again. This router will not take a 4.1 load...

I have supout.rif file of it running at 3.30 for support to look at. Just wanted to leave heads-up...

firmware is distributed along with RouterOS software. if you have routerboard NPK installed, type:

[admin@MikroTik] > system routerboard print
       routerboard: yes
             model: "750"
     serial-number: "1FC201DD513B"
  current-firmware: "2.22"
  upgrade-firmware: "2.23"
and then
[admin@MikroTik] > system routerboard upgrade

it's because this topic already talks about the same issue, it's better to keep reports in one place.

we fixed the Netinstall upgrading issue where it's stuck at "Sending offer". It will be in next Netinstall version, right now you have to use Netinstall 4.0

Sorry, maybe I'm too lamer but Netinstall never works for me. Not just the 4.x versions but all.

Maybe LoL, but I found an interactive video on Youtube about howto use Netinstall and I was follow that step-by-step and it was worked there but doesn't works for me.

I dump the network traffic with Wireshark after router booted the netinstalls kernel and I see the UPD packets witch was sent by the router in every seconds:

src_mac: 00:0c:42:XX:XX:XX
dest_mac: FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
src_ip: 0.0.0.0
dest_ip: 255.255.255.255
src_port: 5000
dest_port: 5000

When I press the "Install button" the Netinstall sends 6 packets:

scr_mac: 00:12:3f:XX:XX:XX
dest_mac: FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
src_ip:192.168.1.15
dest_ip:255.255.255.255
src_port:5000
dest_port:5000

In the previous topic I was wrote that I tried Netinstall version 3.26, 3.27, 3.28, 3.30, 4.0, 4.1 and are didn't works. All of them hungs for 10 seconds after I clicked "Install" button.
But ok, I waiting for the next release.

Hey Normis,

I sent in supout on this router while running 3.30 before upgrade to 4.1.
Ticket#2009101966000057

Yes, licensed was updated and it has the most recent firmware with 3.30.

As soon as upgrqade through normal winbox means or via netinstall to 4.1 as soon as starting services shows up in console all ethernet lights blink on and off and it needs to be netinstalled back to 3.30 to work.

Thanks,
Scott

Because you select the firmware upgrade option in RouterBOOT menu.

Select boot from ethernet after you start the netinstall, and NOT the firmware upgrade.

Reboot the router and it will boot up, and waiting for installation server...

have to say that firmware in bios is not the same as RouterOS installation.

Firmware is referred to as RouterBOOT, that is something like BIOS in your normal PC. RouterOS is like operating system. these two are separate and can be upgraded separately.

do as suggested, set up boot from ethernet in RouterBOOT and run netinstall in same ethernet, connected to ether1 of the routerboard (one with PoE). Use Netinstall 4.0 not 4.1 as suggested by normis

So I try Netinstall 4.0 as normis wrote. Attached screenshots, and the descriptions:

booting.jpg: The router is booting the netinstalls kernel
booted.jpg: The router has been booted the kernel and waiting for installation server
netinstall1.jpg: Netinstall detect the router properly, package selected and ready to press the "Install" button
netinstall2.jpg: Netinstall indicate "Installing" and "Sending offer..." for 1 second
netinstall3.jpg: Indications has gone and hangs for 10 seconds as shown this picture...
netinstall4.jpg: ...and after 10 seconds

FYI as I stated previously I updated the router directly with netinstall 4.1 and ROS 4.1 and when is said services starting in console it stopped responding to anything and all ethernet lights went on and off blinking simultaneously.

It took me 10 times before netinstall worked but it did get past the sending offer about 10% of the time.

This problem has nothing to do with netinstall vs regular update vs new license etc etc. Some RB450 routers will not work with ROS 4.1. Can't tell you why but you do have my supout from the culprit running 3.30.

Well to tell, the router has revived. :D
I so understand, what there is no sense to update repeatedly 4.1? :?

It's not possible, we tested and it works on our side. Try to run Netinstall from another PC and make sure no antivirus or firewall is running on that PC

I was tested on two different PC, notebook and desktop PC.
I was tested on WinXP, Win2k3 32bit, Win2k3 64bit.
I tried with 2 or 3 different Cable and I wasn't use switch or router between the RB and PCs.
It was come into my mind that the firewall is working and I was turned off but no success.
I wasn't use AntiVirus software because I don't use Windows just sometimes for testing labour.
I will reinstall last time WinXP on my laptop and test Netinstall-4.2 on virgin installed Win but I don't like to reinstall anymore this awful OS because of this...
Is there a Linux version of Netinstall or any other way than the M$ Win torture to install ROS onto the erased NAND of RB?

I can't believe. On virgin WinXP installation Netinstall works at first time. Netinstall doesn't like me :)
Normis or anybody do you know any (experimental) settings on Windows that congest netinstall procedure?

I figured out what was the problemwhen I failed with Netinstall.
If I remove "Client for Microsoft Networks" from network settings then the Netinstall won't work.
Normis, U can test it it is possible!

Netinstall also doesn't work on Windows 7 with default windows install config.
It produce the same thing like on WinXP without "Clients for Microsoft Networks" module :/

haha  NetInstall still does not work

tested on 2 PCs Win 10 x64

it worked however on a 32 bit Win 10

actually it worked after enabling all the disabled protocols on the adapter and rebooting the PC

I think without rebooting the PC between tries it will not work.

@ Mikrotik, more QA is needed.
