Which RouterBOARD would I need?

Tue Apr 06, 2010 10:13 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm currently a happy owner of an RB433 router, which I use at home. I'm on a 110/5 Mbit cable Internet connection at the moment, which means my connection speed gets effectively limited by my router (the modem itself is a gigabit Cisco EPC3000 and the switch is a gigabit Linksys), part because the Ethernet ports aren't fast enough, and part because the CPU can't handle the throughput.

I am planning on upgrading my line to a 200/10 Mbit line in the somewhat near future, which means I'll need to get a new router to see anything close to those speeds. I need your advice on which would be the most appropriate model to get. This is what the new router has to be able to handle performance-wise:
  • Sustained 200 Mbit/s throughput from ether1 to ether2 (I use Bittorrent quite extensively)
  • Two separate LANs
  • About 50 or so firewall rules
  • About 10 NAT rules
  • Extensive QoS mangle rules
  • A couple of queue trees
  • Wireless access point (I have an R2N wifi card installed)
  • Usual non-intensive stuff like DHCP server etc.
So far it seems like my alternatives are the RB450G or the quite a bit more expensive RB800. I'm afraid that the RB450 will be too weak, and it doesn't have MiniPCI ports so I'll need to keep my old board to act as a wireless bridge. The RB800 is on the other hand, like I said, quite expensive, considering I'm just a home user.

What would you guys recommend?

Edit: Forgot to mention a few things.

Even RB750G would handle all of the mentioned quite easily. It's CPU is no worse than RB450G. If you need miniPCI, then maybe you can still find the cheaper RB600. We are also working on other gigabit products, but nothing to announce yet.

By the way, you actually don't need gigabit. You should be fine with RB433 then. Really close to 200Mbps it will go.

RB493G??? That would make my day. Gigabit ports plus wireless for my house. Unfortunately, I need to know within a month or so what I'm going to use for my home networking. Will there be information on what these new gigabit products are by then?

Thanks,

Jason

I would just get a RB750G for the connection to your Internet provider and connect it to the RB433 - it should still make a fine access point :)

Yeah, I may do a RB750G or 450G and a consumer wireless router.
