How to reset a miniPCI 3G-modem card?

Mon May 31, 2010 11:16 am

Does anyone know how to reset a Sierra MC8775 (or probably any PCI-device on Routerboard)?
Rebooting of the Routerboard (RB411U) itself is done very well, but the modem card seems to hang even after watchdog-reboot. Disconnecting the Routerboard from power supply is (for us at the moment) the only way to get the frozen modem card working again, but hands-on is not possible because there is no physical access.

Do you have any other card to test?
If you have the same problem with another card (the same model), contact MikroTik support (support@mikrotik.com).

This is not a problem of the RB I think. There may several reasons the Sierra MC8775 hangs. At first we experienced problems after AT+CFUN=1 (for activating this cards). Some (but not all) MC8775-cards needed a Routerboard-power-off-cycle after thats.
This wouldn't be the worst but roaming between two mobile-cells (with poor signal strength) may cause a card-hang too. This is what we believe could be the reason because those RB411U (with bad RSSI) are rebooting continously with watchdog-reset but only go online again after they got one power-off-cycle.

I have the same problem.
So we could use external watchdog hardware to turn off power supply for the Mikrotik Router. But that would be the worst case for us - meaning additional hardware for every station... :-(

Hi,
have the same problem. The sierra wireless mc8775 sometimes just hangs. I also have seen on some RB411u's with this card that the serial port usb2 disappeared. /port print shows in this state just serial0. and the log says

Jan/02/1970 01:03:49 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: initializing...
Jan/02/1970 01:03:49 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: reseting link...
Jan/02/1970 01:03:49 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: reseting link... - could not acquire serial port
Jan/02/1970 01:03:50 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: disconnected
Jan/02/1970 01:04:00 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: initializing...
Jan/02/1970 01:04:00 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: reseting link...
Jan/02/1970 01:04:00 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: reseting link... - could not acquire serial port
and so on.

I've tried the mc8775 firmwares h1_8, h1_1_9_3 and h2_0_8_19 - it's always the same.

Hi,

We have exactly the same issue....

After a period the 8775 cards lock up, then watchdog reset no longer works.. We have 5 411AH routers in test with 4.9 and 4.10 firmware.. Just looking up the boards.

With our ALIX/USB Dongle solution when the watchdog reboots the router it power cycles the USB.. Im wondering if actually happens with the 411AH??? I mean a power down of the minipci slot.??

There is a AT command, AT!RESET or AT!GRESET the only problem is I have no worked out how to get a script to issue this command and then reboot the router or on startup??

Regards

Lee

If you do an AT!GRESET to the MC8775 the 3G-Modem-card goes way for a second and comes up again with another device name in /dev. This causes a Kernel-Oops in RouterOS 4.x in certain circumstances.

on changeing between cells it seems to hung up
only powercycle helps - watchdog doesnb not !
first i thougt the powersupply on the usb port is not strong enough but now i am not so sure anymore...
