Total gn00b

Sun Oct 10, 2010 5:54 pm

Just received a Mikrotik 450, with case and power supply.

Did hardware reset, downloaded Winbox. Start Winbox in Wine, click on the ..., and Mikrotik doesn't show up. Additionally, network connection on Ubuntu shows "disconnected." Cannot connect. Do not have serial cable.

Running Ubuntu 10.04 on Sony Vaio Laptop.

Suggestions?

Hi,

You have to add a network connection to the connection manager with manual IP and Gateway;
Ubuntu disables the interface if it can´t find a DHCP Server and you don´t have a manual configuration.

Default configured IP on RBs is 192.168.88.1; But it doesn´t really matter, because WinBox will find the device, even if you
configured another network in the connection manager.

Even if you manage to access it via the network it would probably be a good idea to buy a serial cable so that you have one when (not if) you eventually need it.
