RB1100AH - new product

Wed Feb 16, 2011 5:18 pm

RB1100 with 1.5GB RAM, faster CPU, hardware acceleration (like RB1000). Price is $100 more than RB1100.
What do you think?

Datasheet can be found here:

guys, is only the AH version of a routerboard, that means just more ram and a faster cpu; not a quad core cpu and sfp etc.

Everyone knows that Mikrotik supports 1.5GB ram...since a long time ago.

In limited production now. We booked an order. MT is supposed to get some in next week. Should find out on Monday how many they will ship to us.

What really surprises me is that they told distributors about it 4 weeks before MUM. They usually save new product announcements for MUM and this Budapest MUM in March will be their biggest show of the year.

Hopefully it means that they have plenty of new toys to announce next month. :)

Actually they support 2GB of RAM. I think they are memory mapping out 512K of that space for other devices in their RB1000 and RB1100 designs. It probably keeps the costs down.

Anyone knows if on x86 is suported more than 1.5GB?

So does the RB1100 have 2 RAM slots then? To my knowledge, there are no 1.5 GB sticks.

nothing is reduced. RouterOS always has had RAM maximum 1.5Gb.
is copy/paste from changelog...

What's new in 3.19:

*) fixed problem - web proxy used up all router memory
if unlimited ram caching was enabled;
*) fixed problem - some log topics got swapped in configuration;
*) reduced maximum supported memory for RB1000 to 1.5Gb (was 1.75Gb);
*) interface mesh was not working in 3.18, fixed;
*) fixed Prism crash;
*) fixed VPLS interface related crash in mpls-test;
*) allow to enter range in BGP instance confederation peers;
*) console - fixed '/system backup save' command, name argument is
optional, and backup file name is automatically generated if empty;
*) sped up IPv6 forwarding on RB4xx, RB1xx and RB5xx;
*) fixed BGP route selection in routing-test;
*) fixed dhcp server to update agent-circuit-id and agent-remote-id for lease
whenever it changes;
So does the RB1100 have 2 RAM slots then? To my knowledge, there are no 1.5 GB sticks.
you can install any size, only 1.5GB will be used.

It was a bug, that's why it's in the changelog. RouterOS always supported 1.5Gb memory.

RB1100AH has a 2GB SODIMM RAM loaded, but RouterOS will only utilize 1.5GB from this module.

Nice,

But a question...
How can the B1100AH @1066MHz be faster then the B1100AH @1333MHz on 1500 packets?

RB1000 have PPC8547 1333MHz
RB1100AH have MPC8533 1066MHz
These are different chips. How is it possible - are compared as the same models?
If the same frequency (1333), the boards have the same performance?

nothing is reduced. RouterOS always has had RAM maximum 1.5Gb.
Then I have found a bug in ROS version 5.2. From system resources...

RB1100
---------
1497.1 Free Memory
1519.4 Total Memory

Roc-Box-D510 (x86 Intel Atom)
------------------------------------
1875.2 Free Memory
1897.7 Total Memory

Roc-Box Core (x86 Dual Core Pentium)
--------------------------------------------
1875.6 Free Memory
1897.8 Total Memory

PPC platform has less available memory (available to user) because of some architecture specifics. Also it has more reserved for Metarouter. This will not change in near future, so we say 1.5Gb is available, even if some platforms have a little more. Memory is not so much used in RouterOS so this doesn't matter much.

This means, i can use the reserved 500M in metarouter(s)?

no, maximum RouterOS can use is 1897.8, so around 300Mb. But this is for internal use, the extra memory is not available to the user.

I think they have problems with the production or with the board. Two of my regular suppliers had had them in their sales list for months, both marked as ´coming soon´. One of these suppliers took it out of their webshop now, the other one still shows "not available yet". This is for at least 5 months now..... And now MT themselves removed it from their http://www.routerboard.com page? (It has been there for sure...) :?
Maybe they are working on something even faster! :D :D

Hi! The "new" product will be named RB1100AH as the older? or the "new" it's the RB1100AHx2 ?

Autum starts on 10 days. Do you have some information about the aproximated coming date (earlier autumn or later autumn) ?

My distributor doesn't have any information related with the part problem of RB1100AH or the newer product RB1100AHx2.

Regards.

How much BGP routes RB1100AH and RB1100AHx2 can handle.
will it normaly work with 3+ full BGP tables and what throughput can it handle with this config.
Also basic firewall will be in use.

LOL, nice answer... I must have missed something... I thought people talked to others with respect when dealing on an official forum.

Last time I checked, Apple doesn't release a product that has an initial limited production scale, and then one month later, announce that there are "issues" and fix it with new hardware.

And yes, last time i had a problem with my iPhone, I crushed it in my car when my motorized car seat moved over it and cracked the screen. They replaced it with a new phone for free within 5 days.

The least you can do is explain in some sort of formal communication, what exactly the problem is, and what people with this product are expected to do. I'll tell you right now, if it becomes a brick and it becomes my "new and improved" paper weight, it will be the last mikrotik product I buy. I still have a ticket that hasn't been replied to in months regarding my RB1000U. I just gave up.

You know what, even if you drop the sarcasm it could have helped. I guess there's no hope...

There is nothing limited, and no "fixes". We wouldn't sell partly-working devices as you are implying. The RB1100AH that were shipped beginning of this year are perfectly fine and working devices with no compromises.

We had first production run of RB1100AH, it was smaller than usual, so supply was limited.
Then we will have a production batch with an improved design because of some supplier changes. Simple evolution of a product.

How much BGP routes RB1100AH and RB1100AHx2 can handle.
will it normaly work with 3+ full BGP tables and what throughput can it handle with this config.
Also basic firewall will be in use.
Realy no one knows?
Some people have written on the forum that with 2 or 3 feeds they got 300Mbit. You will need more RAM for such a setup (2GB instead of just 512MB, but I think these will ship with 2GB actually). Also, the AHx2 has the advantage, that it will have two cores, so if routing eats all resources on core#1, the core#2 will have available resources for all other processes and RouterOS will work as usual.

Good information. Any other difference between AH and AHx2 ?

no, that's the only big difference, as far as I know.

That's more of the answer I was looking for.

Thank you for the explanation! I appreciate the confirmation that there is nothing wrong with the current RB1100AH.

Re: RB1100AH - new product

i'm sorry, if i dumb, but i have idea, what is the relation with memory and BGP-routing thruput (as well as 3x full view).
As i know, memory is needed for routing table.
However, over 2-300mbps uplink, i would NOT choose this product as a core router, rather an x86 (for almost the double price - it worth every cents).

Yes, RB1100AH would nicely do routing of gigabit (i think even with BGP) but not any other - if packet size it's bigger than 1k average.
If you receive a bunch of small packet -> sits down.
You want some filtering -> sits down.
Simple queue limiting a single host -> sits down.
Conntrack ON - minus ~30% thruput.
receiving DoS -> sits down.

I bought a pair of them - i would use them as a VPN tunnel (you know, hardware IPSEC accelerator), instead of routing 500mbps internet feed.

to be fair - DoS vs. anything = anything sits down.

about everything else, it depends on how your configuration is made.

Janis:
to be fair - yes. however a decent x86 (like Core i3 or Core i5 or Xeon) can survive much much bigger pps flood.
I've tested RB1100AH vs i3 router: RB's CPU maxed when a simple queue with 500mbps datarate enabled, while x86 said only ~20-30%.
(iperf test with routing)

RB1100AH - iperf max 980/~350 mbps with 99% cpu
x86 - iperf 980/980mbps with 2 cores loaded, 2cores free (Core i3)

(maybe my measures was bad)

if ports are switched, then you can look at wirespeed for small packets. So, i meant actual performance of the CPU. :)

v4.17 indicates that it is previous "limited" edition of RB1100AH - new one will probably work properly only with version starting from v5.x

The new one is a different design. It also has no fans (silent). But the performance has been drastically improved, nerly 500'000 pps is possible now, so performance for IPsec will be great anyway.

Ok, we need to see if the price has increased too. If it loses one very good feature talking about secured VPNs but it gains a bit more speed I think it should get a bit lower price.

There is a planned release date for the AHx2 ?

Please ask your local distributor for price and availability, those should already be known, but they depend on region

anyone has a benchmark of RB1100AH (no IPSec acceleration) IPSEC tunnel thruput?
i would be interested to compare against older (prototype) RB1100AH (with IPSec) - I could make ~400mbps with it.

Hi Normis,
I found some info about P2020 (RB1100AHx2) CPU. P2020 includes 2 peaces of e500V2 processor, which is the CPU of old RB1000. So does it mean IPSec throughput of RB1100AHx2 is the 2 times greater than RB1000? If yes it will handle 1Gbps (DES, AES) IPSec traffic. right?
