RB411U power consumption

Tue Jun 07, 2011 3:23 am

Is it possible to determine the actual power consumption of the RB411U board itself + how much power a USB device connected to it is using?
My board is connected to a solar regulator.

You can measure the power draw of the board by using a 12V Source, and using a multimeters Milliamp or AMP Draw features...

first read manual / figure out how to set your multimeter to Milliamp / Amp Mode then...

Connect ground to ground then connect +12V to positive lead, and then connect the negative lead of the Multimeter to the +12V input on the RB Board

it will show you exactly the Milliamp draw and you can test how much power used during transmit, recieve, usb on, etc etc etc...

RB 411 Boards are about 100-200 Milliamp idle with no traffic few hundred milliamps while recieving and can be 850ma - 1 amp while transmitting at full bore with a high power card, or about 600-

700ma under a medium load.

Best thing to do is to test the draw and convert into whatever unit you need. Watts = Amps X Volts. I.E. 1amp @ 12V = 12W .... .5amp @ 12V = 6W

EDIT: I found some photos from when i did a little testing. This is with a plain vanilla RB-411. a 411-U should have very similar results as well...

the first photo is full speed test, using XR9 Wifi card. and reads 952 milliamps

the second photo is under <5M traffic and it is reading 296.8 Milliamps
