3G outdoor router - comments welcome.

Mon Jul 04, 2011 1:57 pm

Hi all,

I want to setup 3G HSDPA+ outdoor router, only job of this box would be to connect to 3G network. I was thinking of using RB411U for this, and load it with miniPci-x 3G card. Later the same HW would be used for LTE miniPCI-x card. Would RB411U be sufficient for this job? Or is better to go with RB411UAHR with faster processor and more RAM, and only disable build in WLAN?

I would then connect this box via ethernet to my home router.
I want to put it outside to get better signal reception, since NodeB station is a few hundred meters from my house, and its visible, but inside signal drops for 60%.

I can't find any 3G panel mount antennas with enclosure to mount RB411 inside same box as antenna, there are plenty for 2,4Ghz and 5Ghz bands, bot not 3G. If someone knows where to find it please let me know.

For 3G card I plan to use Sierra Wireless MC8705, but I'm also unable to find it for sale online? If somenone has a source for 3G minipci-x cards please let me know.

Thanks for the help.

Regards.

Hello

RB411U Is enought for any kind of 3G unless you run complicated setup for large network

Check local distributor for your country from official site

Thank you for help, I will go with 411U since it will be a small network behind. Now I need only some nice outdoor enclosure with integrated UMTS antenna.

Hi, RB411U seems to be a good choice for 3G only if you'll be always near it. Cause if 3G module hangs you should turn the router off by hands. Rebooting the router doesn't reboot the 3G module - it stays powered on.

Interesting, I didnt know that, but could this be done by SW or is it HW related limitation? If its SW maybee Mikrotik could build this in OS. Otherwise you have to cut power to the box each time it hangs, in some cases this is not a problem but on remote sites its not really nice.

3G USB modems also suffer this same problem. If my modem locks up, I have to to trek to my station and unplug it.

This is what's happening to me, but I am 4 hours drive to unplug it! Has anyone found a solution?

At present my router is offline (even I set it to reboot itself at 3am every morning), and no-one will be available to hard power cycle it until the end of the month...

RRRRR

Help.

All new products since the SXT (included) have USB power reset, which overcomes this problem. This is a hardware feature, so, old products will still have this issue.

Can we expect updated rb411u or something similar future, with miniPCI-x card port, to overcome this problem?

yes. all updated products should support this, including any upcoming replacements for the RB411 or RB711 devices.

normis, can you inform us when updated RB411U will be out? Will dimensions of the updated RB411U board change?
