Tue Jul 05, 2011 10:20 am

OmniTIK U-5HnD and RB711-2Hn have been added to our product list on http://www.routerboard.com

OmniTIK U-5HnD

OmniTIK is a weatherproof outdoor AP with dual-polarized omni antennas - the perfect companion for our SXT, or for any other 802.11 standard device.

Weatherproof, durable and ready to use. It has five 10/100 Ethernet ports, PoE support and a built-in 400mW 802.11a/n wireless radio. It supports Nv2 TDMA technology with up to 200Mbit aggregate throughput.

I guess I was expecting the OmniTik to have 2.4 GHz capability. Is this something that might be coming later?

SXT is 5GHz, so OmniTIK is 5GHz, as they are a good match. Later, we will also have these products in 2GHz.

*chants*

What do we want? Groove 2Hn

When do we want it? As fast as humanly and production line possible!

I know we can assume the Groove 2Hn will be on its way, but any guide lines?

Also, 711-A-2Hn? No Level4 version? Any reason?

Really excited to see the 711- 2Hn has a much more powerful radio in it! :D

I was honestly hoping for the Omnitik with a 2 GHz solution.
Normis, If SXT is the target CPE(SU) for Omnitik why just the 7dbi Antenna??
Should 7 dbi be good enough for 3 km PtmP links?? I would like Mikrotik's take on that.

The MFM for SXT looks a good shot but I find this super

Will tryout both myself and post reviews

Which purpose might ports 2 to 4 of the Omnitik serve?
As the brochure states these four ports are just plain 10/100 Mbps ports. No PoE-Output.

do these ports support VLAN tags like the CISCO Catalyst 2950 L2 switches. Then i guess the ethernet ports r quite useful.

I think that Omnitik will serve well in PtMP scenarios.
But one Ethernet port would have been sufficient.

If Ports 2 to 5 would also be able to output PoE,
then we could feed the omnitik with up to four backbone links
using only ONE cable (for power and data) to the roof of the tower.
The Omnitik would then also serve as the towers router.

But maybe the Omnitik got a nice PCB-layout like the RB750
in order to modify it for PoE-out on ports 2 to 5.

If anyone has high resolution images of the PCBs front and back,
show them here, please.

Well, ok, it is a nice toy: i think 2.4ghz version is useful in some little works, but i'm also worried about this way.
Today wisp's business needs devices level "carrier class", not toys.

I see OmniTIK as a Especially awesome low cost Microcell AP. Or perhaps MikroCell? :)

Its only going to be good for a few miles/kilometers.

This product reminds me a lot of the Motorola Canopy Advantage.. except it has 5X The bandwidth and costs 10% as much

I would like it to be a 120degree sector. This would triple the gain
and does make sense for wallmounting. But for small sites with 1-2km
radius omnitik is a good product. There are not much H-pol omnis
out there. I'm wondering how good it works with 50sxts connected.
So lets see how it performs.

This is VERY VERY VERY GOOD PRODUCT.

I real need this product to expand my wireless. As the cost suggests, it is nice to use in micro cell - a targeted area. With NV2 and low power the device can be used with solar power that comes with small solar panels.

Mikrotik we trust you! Keep it up!! :D

Depends on a huge number of factors. Including Oversubscribtion ratio, bandwidth limits, usage requirements, frequency availability. Interference, adjacent

channel spacing, antenna placement, total cost path analysis. Many things.

10? For sure if you know what you're doing.

50? i don't think its design implementation includes this large of CPE's in its scope. But of course, theoretically possible.

If you want a 120 Degree sector here is your integrated Mikrotik solution:

http://www.balticnetworks.com/mikrotik- ... b-sxt.html

or

http://www.balticnetworks.com/maxxwave- ... stems.html

and

http://streakwave.com/ItemDesc.asp?ic=AM-5G19-120

there is your integrated solution. 350 bucks, 120degree sector.

I dont understand why people clamor for solutions when they already exist.

Omnitik is a great low cost high performance device, whats to complain about?? Use it for its intended purpose, or find a different solution.

So are we going to see an RB711-A-2Hn?

Or are we easily able to obtain a Level 4 license for the RB711-2Hn, so that we can do AP mode?

The product I'm waiting for is an AP at 2.4 ghz powered by a standard 802.3af PoE switch, built into a cabinet for wall or ceiling mount with high power wireless interface and high gain antenna. It could be a omnitik or an SXT working on 2.4 GHz with a omni antenna. We could say an OmniTik-A-2HN. A reference product may be EnGenius EAP-3660.

The perfect function of this device would be the media conversion in a wireless infrastructure, making a perfect combination with a mikrotik hotspot for hotels and buildings.

Why 802.3af? Imagine powering 20 or more non-standard devices with individual sources in a centralized point and then connect it to a switch.

A plastic box is ideal and elegant, the RB433 are a excellent product, but the RB433 case are something "grotesque" to leave visible to a hotel guest, besides what the architects say about how looks.

I hope you take this into account and that we have a product like this as soon as possible.

Greetings.

¿The integrated antenna in the omnitik, work well in superchannel?
¿I need to put one extra antenna to working well in superchannel?
Thanks.
Which frequency do you want to use specifically? You can't use other antenna, OmniTIK has built in antennas.

what do you mean by superchannel? RouterOS supports all frequencies that the card understands, usually 4.9-6.1GHz.

Why does the Omnitik have 32MB of RAM while the SXT has 64MB?

My main APs are RB600, they use a hair over 32MB of RAM on average. How is the Omnitik going to hold up under load? Is v5 less memory intensive?

Also, another request for 2GHz versions of the Groove, SXT and Omnitik. 5GHz will not work for most of my customers.

I mean to "Superchannel " as frequencies outside of the normal band ,2.3 -2.7 Ghz ,4.9 -6.1 Ghz.
Atheros is the only chipset that reaches frequencies of 4.9 to 6.1 Ghz?
The new Chipset atheros manufactured by Qualcomm works at frequencies outside the band?(4.9 - 6.1 Ghz)
Please send datasheet integrated antenna .

you can't work outside of 4.9-6.1, that is the hardware limit. also, the antenna is not designed to be used outside of that range.

It's a long distance for a 7,5db omni antenna. I would consider working
with sectors to get higher modulation rates.

With RB433ah and F50 pro and 18dbi sectors i get -60/62 signal at 5 km on a SXT cPE. Wht will be signal level with the omnitik at the same loc.
7.5 dbi for 5 km is asking too much(my opinion)

Also taken into consideration should be:
Can the omnitik handle same number of clients as the RB433AH with F50pro?
Can the omnitik deal with same capacity bandwidth as the RB433AH with F50pro?

Lets see, i am yet to use an omnitik.

I'm also casting a vote for a 2GHz version. When it was first announced I thought Oho! a perfect mesh box! But it would really need dual radio/antennas with 5GHz for mesh backbone :(

They are great. You could connect more then one link or some ethernet users to it but you must have seperate powering, which is pain in the ass :D
PoE would make OmniTik superb device, now is just great ;)

One more idea...
Add single 2.4GHz antenna in it for free hotspot and use 5GHz for regular customers.
Integrate it in OmniTik, put 2.4 card in it or put one mPCI slot inside so we can add card in it...
Omnitik with two 5GHz antennas, one 2.4GHz antenna, PoE on ports 2-5... Device of my dreams...

I love Mikrotik and still wish I could use these new products, however Ubiquiti has us sold on the high-power options. 28db TX power allows for longer distances and better penetration. Make a H-Pwr OMNI Tik that is connectorized, and can be used with other sectors, such as the 20db UBNT MIMO Model, and make a 27db Groove, and you'll have our business!

What version of RouterOS will the Omnitik, Groove and RB711-2n run?

4.17 is rock solid with 802.11n hardware, but I've had some odd issues with 5.x. Some stuff I really like, but a few of my links were more reliable with 4.17.

Hi Normis, please let us know how about Omnitik with 2.4GHz wireless interfaces? I`m waiting to try omnitik with 2.4GHz. I hope it will be very good access point for my environment.

HI, I can't find the radiation pattern (1 degree mesaurement) about OmniTIK, it's mandatory for the italian regulatory law, so without radiation pattern we can't use it for business but only for private use.

Thank you Giuseppe

Pospanko you may use an usb wireless card like http://www.interprojekt.com.pl/tplink-t ... p-610.html

Routeros driver for AR9271 is not perfectly stable but it works, maybe in the future mikrotik will improve it :D

I think it's a good work around.

it depends how you use it 6 - 7W +wifi ~8W

this is maximum. Also, if you plug in the USB then add that, if model you talk about has one.

dual chain, don't forget! so 26dBm!
also why do you use incorrect sensitivity for large data rates? at the maximum distance you will never see the maximum speed.

this is how it will be:

I was honestly hoping for the Omnitik with a 2 GHz solution.
Normis, If SXT is the target CPE(SU) for Omnitik why just the 7dbi Antenna??
Should 7 dbi be good enough for 3 km PtmP links?? I would like Mikrotik's take on that.

The MFM for SXT looks a good shot but I find this super
http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52966
Will tryout both myself and post reviews
I totally agree with u 7dbi is a little small number :) mikrotik need to do something like sector version

if i have OmniTIK on 3-5m pole as AP
groove with 2db rubber-duck antenna as client
client is flying around and can be at any altitude 3-30meters

what maximum range can i achieve?

"Port 1" is the only port that will accept power. However it is also the WAN port and (as far as I can tell) in the default configuration you can't access the Omnitik from that port.

The solution I used was to apply power to Port1, and to connect my computer to any of the other ports (e.g. Port2).

I guess I was expecting the OmniTik to have 2.4 GHz capability. Is this something that might be coming later?
SXT is 5GHz, so OmniTIK is 5GHz, as they are a good match. Later, we will also have these products in 2GHz.

normis i feel you should first launch the 2GHZ model as they can be used directly as WiFi AP's and as they also look good it will be a hugh selling point. :D

Agreed. I could throw a test together on 2.4GHz in a dozen different places, get some free testing done with the equipment accessible by ladder before putting it on a tower.

I can only use 5GHz for around 10% of my clients at most, so the 5GHz equipment is nice for a few people, but nothing that I can buy in bulk.

I am just saying, that using the Omnitik just for "windows" laptops will not utilize it's full potential. Because it's a dual-pol device, and to use it's full potential as such, you need to use dual-pol clients. This is not mandatory, but you will not use it's best feature.

aha!! that way....

but if we say use 2 different antennas on 2 different ports of the RB with 2 MMCX connectors.... how will it behave??

say to cover an area of 240 degree using 1 x RB711 with 2 MMCX connectors attached to 2 Sectors antennas (with single connector) covering 120 degree each.

Hi. I'm new to wireless networks and I've never used a MikroTik product.

In the description of the OmniTik it says that you can connect a 3G modem to it, but I can't find anymore information than that.

Is there a supported list of modems?
I'm guessing that it can't strengthen the 3G reception, since the OmniTik is designed to receive 5GHz?

I want to connect to a wireless AP 300m from my house and I know that the SXT is meant for this, but I also want to start using 3G internet and having the modem in the OmniTik on my roof should improve the reception.

So would the OmniTik serve my purpose of connecting to an AP 300m from my house and to use 3G internet?

If I rather buy the SXT and a separate 3G router to share the internet with a few PCs in my house, it will cost the same as the OmniTik. BUT if I then need to buy a GSM antenna to improve my 3G reception, it would cost me more.

Any advice would be appreciated.

3G modem is connected to the USB port. It will work with it's own antenna, and will not depend on the Omnitik in any way. You can simply use the 3G as a backup connection option if your internet stops working, and you need to have a failover.

You can of course use the SXT to connect to the Omnitik, and use the 3G internet provided by the 3G modem in the Omnitik, but why can't you simply use the 3G modem in your home PC, and put an antenna in the window? You wouldn't need any routers at all, just a 3G modem and an antenna.

Unless 3G coverage is only available 300M from the house :)

Thanks for the fast reply.

I think you misunderstood me. I want to buy a CPE to connect to the Cape Town wireless user group. There is a backbone access point close to my house.

I also want to start using 3G as my only internet connection and I need to share it with 4 PCs in my house.

So I'm thinking of using the OmniTik to connect to the wireless user group and to share the 3G with the 4 PCs in my house, rather than buying the SXT to connect to the wireless user group and buying a 3G router to share the internet.

Omnitik has an Omni antenna, it's more suited for providing wireless access, not for connecting somewhere. The antenna is not directional, but radiates around a radius. Of course if the distance is only 300m, it could work.

But! The SXT also has a USB port, and you can also use 3G modem. This would make much more sense:
[PC at home] ---> (ethernet cable) ---> SXT on the roof ~~~~~~~(wireless) ~~~~~~~ -> [AP at the Cape Town tower]

why do you need 3G at all, if you will be connecting to the Cape Town user tower? won't you be getting internet from there?

I understand that the SXT is better suited. I did not know it also has a USB, that's great! Missed it somehow.

The Cape Town WUG is an open, publicly operated network, they don't provide any services.
People use it just to share data, play games and set-up VPNs.

I noticed that the SXT is quite small, can I be assured that most modems will fit inside and that it will definitively work?

they won't fit inside, you will need a usb extender cable, around 10cm. most modems won't fit inside an omnitik either. the modems are fat and bulky usually, hard to make a case where all of them fit inside

Cmon, prod the development guys for a 2.4ghz version of the OmniTik and Groove

I had to roll out around 90 single radios this month, plus have another 60 booked in for January. Using non mikrotik equipment is a real shame as its no-where near as good - but I can't build a 411 + WiFi Card + External case for anywhere near the cost i need to.

Yes, POE on all ports would be great, but here is a simple third-party solution I found:

http://www.wifi-soft.com/passive-poe.php

You can feed this unit from your POE injector, then feed three to seven devices from it, depending on which model you buy. You can also route data between your devices. For $13-$20, this is a STEAL.

I run neighborhood relay units where the signal comes in PTP over an SXT, then goes out over the OmniTik as the tower's router, with cabled service to the host family over the POE cable (which uses two of the ports on the OmniTik, so they are useful).

I am very heartened to learn this week that the SXT in 2GHz will be announced soon, and can't wait for the OmniTik in 2GHz so I can offer some low-cost, low-effort hotspots for local trailer parks.

I think that Omnitik will serve well in PtMP scenarios... If Ports 2 to 5 would also be able to output PoE, then we could feed the omnitik with up to four backbone links using only ONE cable (for power and data) to the roof of the tower. The Omnitik would then also serve as the towers router.
Yes, POE on all ports would be great...
Like the OmniTik UPA ?
Seen it announced, but when I went looking for it, I couldn't find anyone actually selling it. Anyway, I don't have much of a requirement for it in 5GHz. For hotspot use in rural areas, 2GHz is a must. Make me a 2GHz model with POE, and I'm all over it.

Hey normis,

Any news from an outdoor mikrotik with integrated 2GHz support? I mean OmniTik or Groove.
I am counting down to run a big hotspot mesh with over 100 AP over this...

Navid,
currently not, no news yet
Any updates on the 2,4 OmniTik/Groove now? :)

Omnitik has a great performance and i like the dual polarization very effective. I like to modify this ap with some diodes to give power to the other ports so i can connect an 2.4 ghz ap and other ptp links. 2.4 ghz variant would be a great solution for me since i am very satisfied with Omnitik 5.8 ghz and i think is a great solution for wifi hotspot. When will this be available?

Hello Normis,

Well I just order one Omnitik to do some testing. I will be using it for a hotspot. I would off loved it if it was 2.4ghz but thinking about it everything will be 5ghz soon. If this works well I will be buying 196 units for the City am doing. Most of the clients we have seen connected to the test city block we have are Smartphones, about 80%. I also will be buying some mini wireless usb adapters for some laptops if they want the service.

What I want to know is if you guys have tested the range of the Omnitik with smarphones or 5ghz laptops? Also you talked about bringing out the Onmitik 2.4ghz, when do you think this will be available?

Also what do you think about implementing the 5ghz OnmiTik for this city wide nerwork? The way it will work is that am gonna put one omnitik on each corner of the city block. My goal is to be able to cover that whole city block with signal inside the houses.

Attached is a picture of my plan.

Would love to hear from you guys and people who have used it give me some feedback on this unit.

Thanks

Daniel

power of omnitik is not too relevant in this case, because phone transmitter will be the deciding factor. mostly it can work at 50-100m, but it depends on the phone, and how/where the omnitik is hidden. your radius drawing suggests, that in some cases, buildings could block line of sight.

Thank you Normis,

I have used other products in the market and had some issues, I have been using MT since 2001 but always just as the access controller and I have never had issues with the RouterOS. Now I want to just have only Mikrotik on my deployments. Between the Onmitik and what other Mikrotik board do you suggest I should use for this type of city wide deployment and why?

Thanks

Daniel

Other alternatives would be the Groove and the Metal, but they are one chain devices. However, they give you the choice of other antennas. In your situation, antenna doesn't matter much, because mobile device can't communicate more than 50-100m anyway, no matter what type of AP you use. So I think Omnitik is a fine choice.

Great!!!

Ok, I am looking at the Groove and it has the advantage of doing either 2.4 or 5.8ghz. Thats is a very good thing on this equipment. Also there is an antenna that matches this equipment very inexpensive!!

Decisions, Decisions!!!

Comes out to $65

If it was you Normis, what would you use? I ask you because you are the GOD here.. ;)

doing either 2.4 or 5.8ghz
not at the same time though. you would have to change antennas too, if you decided to switch.

Groove gives you choice of antennas, but has only one chain and one ethernet.
Omnitik has built in antennas, but supports two chains (MIMO), and has five ethernets, if you sometimes need to connect another wireless device to it.

Or - if you want the best of both, you can have the RB912 OUT

RB912 OUT - two chains, can use two wireless cards at the same time (so 2GHz and 5GHz at the same time), can use different types of antennas, uses latest generation CPU etc.

I guess I was expecting the OmniTik to have 2.4 GHz capability. Is this something that might be coming later?
SXT is 5GHz, so OmniTIK is 5GHz, as they are a good match. Later, we will also have these products in 2GHz.
Later when? I guess that separate 2GHz version is not necessary if you implement some dualband radio instead 5GHz-only.

Well, maybe problem with antennas - so OmniTik with 2 radios or with spare minipci slot for additional card for those they need it??

By what way your research goes?
