250GS or 750GL

Sun Aug 14, 2011 9:33 am

Hello there. I am looking for a small smart switch. I was going to buy the 250GS for $79 NZD but I note that the new 750GL router is available for $99 NZD. Checking out the specifications, I can see that the 750GL has a better Atheros switch chip. It has a full RouterOS license, which I don't need, but might be helpful if my network topography changes. Based on the small difference in price, I am tempted to purchased the 750GL. Is there any disadvantage in this approach. Topology is a small office wan.

you probably mean the RB750GL.

note that those two are completely different devices. they have nothing in common.

Normis - thank you for your post - I have read many of them in the past and they have been very informative in helping me configure my new router and learn about Mikrotik.

I agree - they are two different devices. But both can perform a switch function. My questions relates to this.

So I assume that the 750GL would be the device to purchase as it is performs a switch function and for a small price increase could also be used as a router?

750GL supports only very basic switching features. More info: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Switch_Chip_Features
250GS is a dedicated switch with more switching features

RB250GS - jumbo frames up to 9k ~$40 (USD) possibly uses less electric power.

RB750GL - ~4k (up from the 1500/1524 supported by the RB750G) ~$60 (USD) is a full blown router.
