RouterOS x86 on CF card?

Thu Feb 02, 2012 11:33 am

Hi,

Does anyone has some experience about ROS x86 installed on CF card?
I'm considering to build x86-based router with CF card as a drive
and problem is that CF card has limited number of writes.
CF card will not act as any storage, just routing.
Is that good idea with CF card or is better to instal HDD instead?

TIA,

You should have no problems. I have CF cards running for years. Jut make sure that you reduce number of writes (do not write log to disk, do not keep graphing on disk, reduce frequency of backups, etc).

Some things must be written to disk, like configuration or static DHCP leases.

I do the same on RouterBoards to reduce the number of NAND write cycles.

Thanks a lot for information, I want to install ROS on industrial grade CF card.

we are running RouterOS on x86 form CF cards, IDE DOMs and USB flash drives. Just ensure that storage device is of high quality and that USB subsystem is stable for the motherboard (in case of USB stick).

I'm running both on CF-IDE and CF-SATAII converters x86 RouterOS v4.xx and 5.xx without problem.

Same here. I don't know how many writes they're good for, but I know what I do with the router is nothing compared to what someone is doing to the cards with a camera.
