To be honest, this sounds like an early April Fools Joke :)
However, I would definitely like to see something like this!

Haha, yes it does sound too good to be true.

If they had SFP+ support, I would have written it off as an April fools ;)

Mikrotik,

is this router based on the Tilera TILE-Gx36? or some other un-announced PPC processor ?

Sounds awesome, did anyone get any pics?

Any word about how it's going to be built, I'm not all that keen on having a router that processes 4Gbps+ for me fall over with no way to get back in and restart the control plane etc.
At the moment we progressed to using RouterOS running on top of ESXi as it's a more stable platform that allows us to restart and backup/restore any router with ease. The alternative (sometimes we combine both) has been servers with Remote access cards that allow console type access and reboot control independent of the router itself.

Hopefully either we see something that addresses this, or some better quality control on new versions! :-)

Datasheet of the processor. I think this is the right one, becouse the Cache size announced is the same as the processor above.

Available this summer

As with previous deliveries, I should ask what year will it be available? Heck, I still haven't seen any 751G models available yet.

Mikrotik continually says when a product will be available, but seldom comes close. sounds like a very awesome product, but I would hate to base any future plans based on it's availability till I see one first.

Each tile can independently run a full operating system, or a group
of tiles can run a multi-processing OS, like SMP Linux.
That is nice. I wonder if ROS will allow running a foreign OS on a tile?

I didn't see Flash/RAM specs. I hope this doesn't go down the road of the RB100AH and get crippled by no flash.

To the poster above - RB751G has been available for a few months already. We are actually giving them away at the MUM now.

Looks like a great product!!!

This "cloud" buzzword does some pain to me however :-))

Customer: "Can I buy cloud from you".
Myself: "What do you need. Do you want Emailservice, Filespace, Webservice?"
Customer: "I want cloud. Please make me an offer."

Normis, you should see that the poster above is from Location: Eagan, Minnesota USA.

Mikrotik is not shipping the RB751G into the USA until FCC testing and approvals have been completed. That completion date has been on a constant "2 more weeks" cycle since the beginning of the year. I guess this is payback for the US getting the RB751U first before is was approved and available in the EU.

Thanks Tom for the information which now makes sense.

MT any updates on this? It looks nice but are there any serious specification sheets out?

What about price? Even if it's not very accurate, we'd like to have a "ballpark" idea. Are we talking 1K are we talking 5K are we talking 10K ?

Is there a prototype video or anything? I'm really curious about the screen.

CCR-1036 should be available at the end of Q3 2012
when it scheduled for Q3, then according to previous experiences, at the best case, it will be available at the end of the year, most likely at the next spring, or even summer. What a disappointment ...

This beast needs V6. You'll be happy when this is tested enough. It's a hard job to make a
massive parallel system running stable and smooth. And as this device is a central router ...

normis, I have RB1100AHx2 in Datacenter as firewall. Yesterday/today I was 500k pps ddos attack with 400Mbit bandwidth. I add drop rule in bridge to block client server, but it not help me, bcoz RB has 100% one core loading of queuering and drop 95% of new packets. This product will have this bug with multicpu balancing of any one task ?
If yes, I will order and set x86 max frequency router with intel nic's as firewall for blocking ddos source (if i know it), or blocking destination.

we are using RB1100AH to estabilish bgp connections with full routing tables but we are getting often 80% cpu usages and higher sometimes, how will this one behave? Maybe it will not die with 2 full sessions? that would be awesome.

True but this second PSU costs more than the whole router to be produced? Use VRRP HA config :)

excuse for my pessimism, but my point was, that what MT have planned and was has actually happened, is totally different things. For example, RB750UP and RB2011 was announced in March 2011 (about the same time like Cloud at this year), and planned for shipping at the end of the summer and at autumn. I got my first RB750UP at Christmas, and still have not get RB2011 (as far I understand, those I would need, with SFP port is even not in production yet). And Cloud Core Router is infinitely more complicated platform.

My RB1000 is under heavy load and we desperately need a more powerful router, but I keep remind myself, that this Cloud beast is only in my imagination, keep looking at x86 platform.

RouterOS v6 will have to be in much better shape to start shipping it on the CCR, so we are working hard to finish it up. Q3 until end of September, so we still have some time.

Having or not having ASIC's it'd still be entirely dependant on the rules you're feeding to it.. eg: a Layer7 filter will always use more CPU than a simple protocol or port based filter so you can just have a blanket line saying "100 rules will degrade performance by X".

If it does have ASIC's one would assume these will be limited in functionality to standard firewall rules and not the full RouterOS subset, in a similar capacity to the switch chips.

Just my 2c.

2 omega-00 - i dont need nat, or L7 filter (for NAT i use linux, and for L7 i use cisco sce2020), from CCR i need only firewall for src-dst, protocols, ports...
In juniper EX3200 i can add more than 10000 firewall rules without speed degradation (all rules install on TCAM memory in ASIC).
If CCR use ASIC - its very good, but without it - beeter buy more cheaper core-i5 and install ROS or better linux on it ).

Hey, mikrotik !! where are you ... How many simple firewall rules i can add to CCR without speed degradation ????

if you need simple firewall rules only, then CCR is not for you. All MT router products so far, is built for universal usage, not for one simple task in massive scale. Is very unlikely, that CCR will have ASIC chip(s) inside.

why you think that CCR is not for me ??
because ASIC based products will be in any cast faster than CCR on your task. Firewall count is one thing, but what about traffic speed and packet size. I think CCR can handle 10000 rules at 1Mbps with no speed degradation, but in speeds overs 100Mbps, I am not so sure anymore. ASIC based products can handle 10000 rules probably at 100Mbps or even 1Gbps, that's the difference. MT wont answer to your question, because simple firewall rules is only one very small part of features what CCR will have, and is pointless for them to test it specially for you. Moreover, result will depend from many other things what you are not specified. Interface count, packet size, traffic amount, order of rules, etc, etc.

netmaster - ??? in the first post i ask about ASIC, i know that without ASIC CCR its just another PC router. And i ask about firewall at wire speed .. not 1 MBps or 100 MBps. Any switch or router with ASIC can filter packets at wire speed, 1 or 10 or 100 GBps.
What futures will have CCR in compare to x86 ROS ??? Its the same OS , but on different hardware )
And again - to answer for my question, you (or mikrotik) dont need
many other things what you are not specified. Interface count, packet size, traffic amount, order of rules, etc, etc.
you need just create 1000 firewall forward rules (just copy same rule 999 times), and if on uot interface speed and PPS will be the same as on input interface - thats very good !!

I hate to hijack this thread but you guys think there's any chance Mikrotik might bring slightly scaled down versions out of the CCR ? We're hitting around constant 75-80% cpu usage on our AHx2 , and while we don't really need the high port count or massive core count of the CCR , something slightly scaled down would work perfect for us.I'd prefer to stick to routerboard hardware for the most part than go full hog X86 just for my sanity's sake.

If you do order 2 big boxes, no reason not to run MikroTik on them, the BGP implementation works well, you could order just one and wait for the CCR to use as your secondary device ;-)

x86 boxes with RouterOS will give you more flexibility and useful features to quickly and directly serve your needs.

WinBox and WebFig will make your life easier and prepare you for the CloudCore when it is available.

According to wikipedia TILE64 architecture is supported starting from 3.6.36 kernel. Since ROS6 is at 3.3.5 right now, doesn't that mean a long wait till core router is ready?

My configuration for the would to be Vyatta BGP router ... I am really hoping Cloud Router could appear now.

Btw does Mikrotik Support HA such as Clustering?

Why do you want to waste electricity and money with this x86 beast? RAID in a router? Impress your GF with something she can see not with stuff that is sitting in a server room.

If the disk fail, I wont need to bring down the router to repair it.

I need a router which can process as many PPS as possible.

I am not sure if that question was for me but I am planning to run Clustering on the Vyatta for this pair of router and if one fail, the other would take over the BGP session.

May I ask if Mikrotik has this clustering feature (Active-Standby)

Thanks!

Yes - one more BGP session arranged with upstream provider + HSRP (VRRP) on the "inside" side.

Should we still keep our hopes for the CCR for some time soon ?

MT team. Please enlighten us. We are ready to purchase 2xCCR.

Or we will have to buy Cisco 4900 :(

Clustering in the sense of configuration synchronization....No, that is another long standing feature request.

They never said a year.
Always remember the RB2011 series

But with the CCR we might get ROS optimizations for highly parallelized CPUs.
Now if it would run on a Sun SPARC T5140 with 128 logical cores ;-)

NEW PRODUCT - Cloud Core Router

Tue Sep 11, 2012 3:53 am

Most of the heavy parallel optimizations are in the most recent Linux kernel, mt really only needs to wait around or that. The CPU is already supported in kernel so I can imaging that the wait is mostly based on re-writing some single threaded or poorly threaded code so it can utilize 36 cores.

About a 'scaled down' version, the tileara CPU w/ 36 cores IS the scaled down version.

Can I make labs with each core running a separate RouterOS configuration, IP adresses etc? By connecting for example eth1 with eth2 so on to simulate many routers connected together?

This would be useful for everyone to test MPLS etc before implementing it in the production network :)

I do not understand why Mikrotik to not answer to a very interesting and important questions about CCR1036..... :-(

The answers are often general questions like:
Q: This is best product
A: Yes, :-)

We are "professionals" we want to buy your products, we dont buy tomatoes in the store. You must understand that.

Both companies competing in the market have a lack of communication.
I mean Mikrotik and UBNT.

Be open, we appreciate it!

Only opennesses we need is to put three routers in a lab and test the one in the middle with Traffic Generator. We put our heavy config on it and test if it will pass all the packets without loss , out of order and weird delays. Then we know we have true power. And we go to celebrate after that.

Of course it is not "stable", whatever you mean by that.
No company would just put a finished product on the self and tease users :)

Usually when the price is released that means that the product is 1-3 months away (ie. initial production run, last bug fixes,...)
So right now I'd say there is a 30-40% chance it will be shipping before December 20.

Always keep in mind the RB2011 series promises.

CCR will come preinstalled with RouterOS v6, and is only compatible with RouterOS v6. The CCR could be available much sooner if you guys helped us test RouterOS v6 to give us more confidence, that the software is stable enough. We are doing what we can, to test ourselves, but to speed things up - download RouterOS v6rc2 and see how it works for you.

It is high risk to run beta software on production environment and based on past experiences seldom any of my support cases to get respond/resolution after I have supplied the support file. Nobody bothers to reply ...

As such to run beta software + lack of active support == disaster for production environment ... I am sorry but this is hard truth.

I understand the product is very low cost and you guys never charge for any support yearly fee but in order to run an effective post sales support i think you guys should start considering to provide enterprise support with a fee and with that money you could add quality post sales headcount and provide prompt reply and resolution on issues.

I love this product and we uses it alot. We want to see this product/company grows!

Thanks!

There's no way you'd see me running the beta on a production network; the point of getting early access to the beta versions is so you can run them up on a test bench and/or run them on your home router etc for review. There's no good reason that anyone here can't do that, which is what MikroTik are asking for assistance with.

Just because they can test all the basic features doesn't mean you or I have an odd setup that may catch a bug in the beta/RC versions, therein lies the point of them making the software available early and asking you to test it.

Besides this, when you report an issue to Cisco, Juniper, Brocade as part of your maintenance contract and they send you a patched version to resolve the issue; you're testing their new release in just the same way and IMO you should *always* be testing this sort of update before rolling it out to production networks.

bugs or issues would not necessary appear when you are running/testing in a home/lab environment - perhaps you might just noticed some comestic bug.

the real issues would appear when loads are putting to it meaning in production networks.

anyway i am not interested to debate with you as this is just my view with Mikrotik.

I am looking forward for Mikrotik to start selling Enterprise Support package where they could grow their post sales support with quality replies and resolution.
