I was in the exact same situation just yesterday. You can fix
this by updating the RouterBoard BIOS to version 1.7 and
use its new "Format NAND" BIOS menu option.

On the re-formatted NAND the netinstall will probably work OK.

What utility/process to upgrade RB500 FW to 1.7...???

Fri Mar 10, 2006 8:47 pm

:?: :?: :?:
Frustrated..... Just trying to get my RB532 to boot.... stuck at the Starting Services.......

Figured I'd upgrade the FW..... but no relief there either.... see below..!!

Looking ALL over RB site and MT site to no avail.... WHAT UTILITY SHOULD BE USED TO UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE ON TEH RB500...???

I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO USED THE SERIAL FILE UPLOAD... BAD FILE ID
I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO USE A BOOTP SERVER.... BAD FILE ID
I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO USE THE RB200 1.3.6 UPGRADE UTIL... BAD FILE ID

Ok....... so what's the secret and why is a secret...???

You can upload the firmware via the serial console using Xmodem protocol (for ex. with Hyperterm from Windows).

It's also explained in the Wiki.

Worked for me, no issues with BAD FILE ID or anything like that.

This is going to sound "STUPID" but....

I have one of the original RB500s.

I almost sent the board back for this sale issue (I had an RMA and all)

Here it comes......

Use Dumb / Stupid /Slow NICs when running netinstall to a routerboard 5XX

I had a Compaq laptop connected to my RB500 and used Netinstall to upgrade the OS.. it CRASHED with the same issues...

I tried and tried to correct it... I tried cables, options witih the boot sequence and all..

I finaly tried an old 3Com PCMCIA card to run NEtInstall from and it WORKED !!

There seems to be a point durring the reload wher the routerboard will drop the ethernet conection for a split second. If your card is a fast one it will pick this up and freak, causing Netinstall so sense a network failure and the reload will abort..

Usa a Old / Stupid / Slow NIC and it does not "cacth" the drop... and the reload works..

I now ALLWAYS carry an OLD 3Com or Xircom PCMCIA card in me laptop case just incase my RB500 needs a "Fresh Brain"...

Good luck and good "RouterBoarding"

I'll second what Craig said. I solved it a different way by using a switch between the install pc and the board. The nic on the pc doesn't see the 'drop'.

Yes...I use it . Nothing to do!
Somewhere I read to put ms*****.dll in the same directory of netinstall, but I don't know if it is necessary and where I can find this DLL.

a solution is to first plug in the ethernet cable and then start router, and then start netinstall (in this sequence). this depends on the windows network card, can you tell us which network cards do you use (users who have this problem)?
