RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN Questions Topic

Sat Sep 08, 2012 5:00 pm

So my stuff arrived yesterday and it seems to be working really well! I have 2x RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN, one for my home automation and one for testing purposes.

If anyone has any questions about it, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

One question I remember being asked is how big the internal flash storage is. Sadly it's only 64MB. It comes half full with about 30MB left of free space. Of course you can expand it using the USB port.

I made a picasa album with some (phone) photo's I've taken. If anyone wants some close up pictures of some part I can make them. The album can be found here.

Well, let's get this topic rolling! :D

Small update from myself. Did some performance testing doing usenet downloads. So basically using NAT'ted internet.

My internet line is 120Mbit down and when pulling the full 120Mbit the CPU load of the RB2011 is between 50% and 60%. So it can easily handle that. Hopefully that gives users that wish to use it as an internet gateway an idea of what the maximum performance will be.

Well, that's a hard one. Currently (as far as I have been able to tell) it's only useful for measuring throughput and other stats of the interfaces. Navigation is quite confusing, I'll have to look up the wiki page on that.

But mostly the fact that my router is stuffed away in a closet upstairs and I basically never go there makes it a bit of a "nice to have" but not really useful feature (At least for me). If it would hang in my living room I would find it very awesome.

The LCD itself and the graphics are actually of pretty good quality! Better then I was expecting at least. I'll try and snap a few shots of it tomorrow with the screens available and post them here.

I can imagine if you have to manage a lot of mikrotik equipment and when you get to a site and want to login and need to know the IP, if they would enable it to have a sort of pincode and then show some interface IP numbers, etc. that could be quite useful.

So it all really depends on your situation and what features they are going to enable with it. I believe this is their first router with the LCD so I'm sure features will expand with future software releases.

You know, the 2011 boards have quickly become my favorite router board and I am currently using them at all my towers (yay for more ports over a gl and metal case ftw) but I'll be darned that it bugs me the led's dont flash! Call me weird but when I see a piece of networking gear without blinking lights, it automatically makes me think something isn't working..

if they would enable it to have a sort of pincode
We will add PIN and basic configuration options in RouterOS v6

I'm trying to figure out what kind of cable/adaptor I will need to connect a RB/2011 to an APC UPS so that I can monitor the UPS at the tower(s).

To connect to most of the APC cables (USB Type A plug to RJ-45) I would probably need a micro-USB B to USB Type A receptacle. I haven't been able to find such a cable in 30 minutes of googling.

So far, this RB looks like more trouble to use for USB UPS monitoring than the RB493Gs we have been using/soldering. I keep wondering if MikroTik means for the USB to be used as a console port.

Bah, I just found where Normis has already mentioned that it is basically intended as a USB console port, mass storage and 3g modem utilization to come. I presume RouterBoard will have to build the cable, or USB hub for that.

I believe a standard USB OTG cable should do the trick. There you can plug in your standard USB plug. Mikrotik chose for this standard probably because it's smaller, further then that I don't really know either, normal USB is fine. It has also become the default european standard for phones, but since it won't accept a charge from a standard charger, I don't see the use in using this plug either.

So if your USB monitoring worked on a RB493Gs, it should work just fine on this one as well.

Sorry, it took me a little bit to get back to you with the spectrum analyzer graphs. I have included them as attachments, I did not know which graph you wanted so I included them all except for "graph" because that one seemed more realtime to me.

Hopefully this is what you needed, if not, let me know!

This one is easily findable but I will awnser none the less. You even provided the link with the most info yourself? Read!

This model has no direct CPU ports.

Wifi is connected through PCI-E.
The 5 Gigabit ports are connected through a CPU port.
And the 5 100Mbit ports are also connected through a gigabit CPU port.

So 2 switch chips inside. That's it. Well there is also USB, but well, that's connected using a USB chip to the CPU or maybe the CPU has logic onboard for it.

"Atheros8327 is present on RB2011 series(ether1-ether5+sfp1) + Atheros8227 is present on RB2011 series(ether6-ether10)." For the features, see the link you provided.

I saw this mate. I've just wondered if i want to use The 5 Gigabit ports like a gigabit switch and would be CPU fully loaded from traffic between gigabit ports. Could you test for me - if you try to copy something big /Blue Ray ISO etc./ between two machines attached to gigabit ports - what is RB2011's cpu utilization and what is the speed reached . And finally can usb operate via usb hub - I'm planning to connect on RB2011 apc ups, flash drive for extra storage and 3G modem.

That depends on how you configure your device. If all five gigabit ports are in a single switch group then CPU will see the whole group as a single port and L2 switching between these ports will be done in HW.

Ah, ok, that's a fine question then, I just did not understand it that way.

Yes, the switch chips works as designed and all traffic that goes through it does not cause CPU load.

My current configuration is as follows:

GbitPort 1 : WAN Uplink (120/10)
GbitPort 2 : LAN in house
GbitPort 3 : ESXserver (with 16TB of data stores)
4&5 free

100MbitPort 1t/m4 : free
100MbitPort 5 : Omnitik 5Ghz AP

It's configured without bridges, all is routed between Omnitik and network for instance. Further GbitPort2 is configured as 'Master port' so in Gbitport 3, 4 and 5 you select that GbitPort2 is the Master port. This configures it in such a way that the switch chip will handle the traffic.

I can confirm from testing with iperf of file copies that the traffic does indeed flow through the switch chip and does not cause CPU load.

If you wish the CPU to handle the traffic you can create a brdige between selected ports. That way you can manipulate the traffic that goes through it which you cannot using the switch.

Sure, will do so when I can. Currently on vacation for a week or so. And then I need to find a powered hub. But from what I remember reading from other members and their experience with other routerboards, it should be no problem.

To clarify how to ports are connected, here is a block diagram. We will include it in the manual too:

In terms of wireless performance, if the router would be configured to run both G/N, is it possible for various devices to connect at different rates?

For instance: 2 laptops only have wireless g, 3 other laptops have wireless N capabilities. Can all of these run at their respective speeds? G laptops at G speed, N laptops at N speed simultaneously?

This is a limiting factor on some other access points I've seen... that if one device is G, everyone else is limited to G, etc...

Thanks!

yes, 802.11n capable devices will work at N speeds while g mode users will work at their usual speed. That is true for all RouterOS wireless APs.

Could any of you please provide the NAT and Switching performance via iPerf?

I tried iPerf on my RB433GL and RB493G. The RB433GL has very poor performance on everything. No wonder it's low cost model.

RB493G is alright, but not great! I only only get 2XX Kbps on NAT and 4XX Kbps on switch chip.

I don't expect the switching of RB2011 being better. But I do expect the NAT performing better.

It would be great if you could provide some stats. Thank you very much.

Earlier I conducted a small test before putting an RB211L-IN to work, see here: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... 65#p326665 - I admit it's somewhat vague, but should present a general picture of what to expect. It's performing better than my RB450G, anyway.

Thank you very much. I get the picture now.

It's really better than the old high end family and cheaper than RB493G although RB2011 series only has 5 Gigabit ports.

It's very nice as a router or AP. But it does not perform well as switch or NAT.

On the other hand, Asus RT-N66U has much better performance as gigabit switch or NAT.

I don't really understand what you are asking. Switching performance = wirespeed.

Some proof here :
D:\temp>iperf -c 10.10.128.254 -w 256KB -t 60
------------------------------------------------------------
Client connecting to 10.10.128.254, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 256 KByte
------------------------------------------------------------
[ 3] local 10.10.128.6 port 49300 connected with 10.10.128.254 port 5001
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 3] 0.0-60.0 sec 6.59 GBytes 943 Mbits/sec
With 64KB blocks
D:\temp>iperf -c 10.10.128.254 -w 64KB
------------------------------------------------------------
Client connecting to 10.10.128.254, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 64.0 KByte
------------------------------------------------------------
[ 3] local 10.10.128.6 port 49386 connected with 10.10.128.254 port 5001
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[ 3] 0.0-10.0 sec 1.08 GBytes 927 Mbits/sec
Using smaller blocks might lower performance, but I've seen this on many switches, not just the mikrotik one. So switching is switching and wirespeed as far as I can see.

This is from a beefy desktop computer with an Intel NIC to a VM running windows 2008 R2 on VMware ESX 5.0.1 also using an Intel NIC.

I will see if I can also test some NAT performance. If you need more info about the switch or wish to specify the tests, let me know. :)

It's very nice as a router or AP. But it does not perform well as switch or NAT.

On the other hand, Asus RT-N66U has much better performance as gigabit switch or NAT.
Well, it has 2 distinct switches, one 5-port Gbit and one 5-port fast ethernet. Switching within one switch or the other is wirespeed. Passing packets from one to the other involves the cpu (see Normis' post above on the internal structure) and thus subject to forwarding/routing speed of the CPU (see the product homepage for numbers). For managing several APs or as a gateway device for a small office (among others) it's perfect and gives pretty good performance. It all depends on what you're going to use it for.

Edit: the RT-N66U uses hardware-assisted NAT which makes NATing almost wirespeed. It's a feature I'd like to see in MT products, but they seem to have chosen another approach (see the new CCR device).

One question I remember being asked is how big the internal flash storage is. Sadly it's only 64MB. It comes half full with about 30MB left of free space. Of course you can expand it using the USB port.
Khm ... just got mine and it has 128MB internal memory.... about 90MB free (for now :D ) .... having some issues with gigabit ports for now ... they don't seem to like gigabit speed but work fine with 100mbit ... will test further next week when I have more time.

Is this next to the power cable an ethernet port or only the ports on the front are present?

One question I remember being asked is how big the internal flash storage is. Sadly it's only 64MB. It comes half full with about 30MB left of free space. Of course you can expand it using the USB port.
Khm ... just got mine and it has 128MB internal memory.... about 90MB free (for now :D ) .... having some issues with gigabit ports for now ... they don't seem to like gigabit speed but work fine with 100mbit ... will test further next week when I have more time.

JF
Cool that yours is bigger. Mine really is only 64MB of flash sadly enough.

I also have had problems with the gigabit ports getting set to 100Mbit. Putting them on forced gigabit and then back on auto negotiation always fixed the problem. Have had this with different ports and different cables. Maybe a bug?

I purchased one from roc-noc.com. They have many in stock now...

No, this is a serial connection port. You can use any cisco style RJ45 - Serial connector to directly connect to the router and manage it from CLI.

It does not work at gigabit speeds... it does not negotiate at gigabit but at 100mbit, if I try to force it to gigabit it does not work. Comp has intel gigabit card (Intel 82566MM) which works ok at gigabit speeds with Dell, Cisco, also mikrotik RB450G and RB493G but not with RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN.

Re: RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN Questions Topic

I have recently bought this router and I am new to the RouterOS. So I have some questions:

1. Is it normal when I use Quick Set and set the WAN settings for a static IP provided by the ISP and the RouterOS sets this configuration to the sfp1 interface instead of for example any of the other 10?
2. When I use the webfig the Switch menu is missing but it is there when I use WinBox. Is this normal?
3. What WiFi settings could provide more coverage inside an apartment?

Thank you!

Edit:
1. I figured out what sfp1 means, it is a cage for an optical cable adaptor.

I experience the same problem. At first the ports were bridged together without utilizing the switch chip, so I configured them using the following command:
/interface ethernet set etherX master-port=etherY
Then I connected my notebook and the speed was only 100mb. If I set it to 1gb then it stops working. Other approaches such as change from auto to 1gb and then back to autonegotiation also did not work for me. The notebook (Dell) has Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx series LAN and my desktop computer (again Dell) also has the same series LAN card but it is working fine. I installed the same driver versions and still no change for the notebook computer. I also updated to the latest RouterOS 5.21 but no change. Should I contact the support?

Edit: I contacted the support and if there is a solution I will post it.

Edit2: I replaced the cable and everything is fine now. It appears that the first cable was with a very poor build quality and it affected the negotiation while using the switch chip.

Did anybody measured real-life wireless performance of RB2011UAS-2HnD router?
I'm interested in:
  • RB2011UAS-2HnD to Laptop, Phone and other consumer device
RB2011UAS-2HnD to other Mikrotik device wireless
    RB2011UAS-2HnD to RB2011UAS-2HnD
I'm looking for HTTP,FTP, SCP, SMB (Cifs) performance @ single thread and multi thread as well.

if they would enable it to have a sort of pincode
It does have PIN code ability, and can configure IP addresses and other settings. It can do that already! ;)
How we can set up new pincode? Or activate it?

I cann't find settings.

What RouterOS version are you using? Is the gigabit link unstable or never established at all? Please make sure there are no problems with the cable.

I have tried with 5.20 and 5.21 ... link is never established at all. I've tested with different cables (cat5e, utp and ftp) that all work at gigabit speeds without any issues on dell 2824 switch.

Currently, none of the RB2011 series RouterBoards support USB power reset feature.

update: feature will be available in next release of RouterOS in either v5.22 or 6.0rc3

Guys I got 3 of those and I'm satisfied. That's a big word from me :D. USB connector design is "not the best looking one", but it's not disturbing at all. The one most disturbing issue is that blue LED is like a flashlight. Is there a way to turn it off or lower the intensity of that LED?
Image

My router came with 128MB of RAM and 128MB of internal Flash memory. All 3 routers had some bad blocks even on first boot (0.2%), but there are enough free memory to test a simple metarouter.

Wireless performance is much better compared to RB750*. Link quality and stability is great unlike previously mentioned device.
Peak (continuous) wireless performance was ~108Mbps on ~5m distance during CIFS file transfer, HTTP is a bit better. I didn't tested UDP because most of my traffic is TCP (CIFS/HTTP). Performance on 10 meters + 2 walls was about 60Mbps. Test is done by a simple notebook with Atheros wireless card.

It must have 64MB NAND. If for some reason we run out of 64MB chips, we could use bigger ones. Treat this as a surprise gift.

thanks for answer Normis, but its not normal situation
in page http://routerboard.com/RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN not described - how many flash installed
and for some buyers come 128 MB flash and for some only 64MB ?! we play in Russian roulette ?
but we pay the same money !
and more - for some people its not important (128 or 64) but for some other its important
may be mikrotik official differentiates RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN with 64/128 flash
(for example RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN-64F and RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN-128F)
because for some people its important
they also have different price (for few dollars/euro more)
i also want RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN with 128MB flash.

ps for RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN what already manufactured - how i know when buy/ordering - have it 128MB flash or 64MB flash ? (may be on some serials or other visual cues on the box ???)

i don't know, i receive LESS or MORE, because size of flash memory not described on official page (where i can see official public document where it described for this model ???)- and now i can say what i receive LESS, if we have fact what some people have RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN with 128MB flash memory!

This is why we don't specify NAND size - we ship devices with enough NAND for RouterOS. For things that require more storage, you can use external drives (USB. microSD).

30 - 35 megabits to SMB share and the CPU goes to 100%
internal NAND is small , via usb - there are another problems with usb power reset etc.
useless for NAS even via usb
I'm planing to use it for some backups , scripts , manuals etc.

Touch Screen Needs calibration

Sat Nov 03, 2012 6:01 pm

I have a RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN that works. It appears to have 128 MB of flash on it. I'm running RouterOS6.0RC2. I observe two issues:

1) The touch screen displays info properly, but touching it does not work properly at all. It either needs to be calibrated or it is defective. Touching it in the lower left corner, for example, selects the item at the top of the screen. The touches do not seem at all related to where I touch it. Is there a way to calibrate this, or must I return it to my supplier for replacement?

2) When I did a factory reset of the configuration while running RouterOS6.0RC2, the configuration was reset to a CPE configuration even though it was shipped in an AP configuration. This took hours to figure out since in AP configuration ETH1 is a DHCP client and the other ETH ports serve up DHCP (where the router will respond to 192.168.88.1) whereas in a CPE configuration only ETH1 will respond to 192.168.88.1. Has anyone had a similar experience when resetting the configuration on this router with 6.0RC2?

This is why we don't specify NAND size - we ship devices with enough NAND for RouterOS. For things that require more storage, you can use external drives (USB. microSD).
and why (don't specify NAND size) ??? i don't understand !
for each device must be technical specification where must be described all parameters
NAND size one of this parameters why its not specify on technical specification ?! its not normal
I as buyer must know what i buy before but not after, also its not normal situation when one people pay the same price as other but thy give 2 times more on the same model device!!!
Mikrotik as minimum must be describe this parameter in technical specification !!!
and (ONLY AFTER FIX technical specification)if they install more its may be look as gift, but now i can say and i say - you install on my device less memory because
on technical specification its parameters not described and i see what many other people buy this device with 2 times more NAND FLASH memory !!!
also now i LEGALLY have right to request a replace my device on the same but with 128 MB because i have fact what people buy this model with 128MB FLASH.
I'm await your response.

I really do not understand your problem. He has already told you that the device will come with 64MB. If they run out of chips, instead of delaying production, they use 128MB chips and make this space available to you, free of cost.

If the specification should be listed or not can be debated. MikroTik chooses not to do this so that they can change the chips without having to create a new product and change the listed specifications without problems. The product still has all the specifications listed, and those that are subject to change, aren't listed, like the flash memory size.

They way you sound, you are saying you would be happier if they would software limit it down to 64MB again so that no one ever can receive a 'lucky' unit. Personally, I have had devices which have had these 'software' limitations and they have always frustrated me a lot. So I can only applaud MikroTik for making this space available to the end user as an extra bonus, free of charge.

If I may give you an analog comparison. If you buy a new car with a 85 horsepower motor and it turns out to deliver 95 horsepower (using the same amount of fuel and pollution) when you test is. Do you go back to the garage and complain? No. If you get too little, yes, of course you do. But the manufacturer probably uses a guideline that the motor needs to produce at least 85 horsepower and a bit more has never hurt anyone. Or would you rather have they tune their engine in such a way that you only get the 85 horsepower instead of the 95?

Now I understand that this is a digital and an analog comparison. But the end result is just the same, you a getting a bit more then what was initially intended, but that shouldn't hurt anyone.

Please, just say thank you very much and be happy with it. Or state that you have interest in buying 128MB or even 512MB units to make that interest clear. Don't rant them for actually giving you more, or varying sizes in the units when the specification was never listed to begin with!

Without looking at forums you don't know "what was initially intended". Getting this device with only 64MB and reading that some people got 128MB for same price might hurt a bit especially if you plan to use metarouter which can use only internal memory. So I think that specification should statesomething like "at least 64MB of NAND".
state that you have interest in buying 128MB or even 512MB units to make that interest clear.
So tell me, what will this change? If it's random chip as it appears here you can't choose. It would be better to have diffrent model numbers and you could choose to pay 5$ more for being certain that you get 128MB version. I got lucky and I am very happy with this, but there are other...

Hi,

My question is about this board that do somebody tested the switches utilizing the maximum bandwidth? Do the new Atheros chips solve the issue present on the older models (mine is RB450G) equipped with Atheros 8316 switch IC? (Switch hangs when you send huge amount of data through the switch with gigabit speed).
And the other question is this 108 Mpbs an effective value, so if you copy a file, the speed gets around 10-12 MBytes/sec?

I have tested the switch (normal usage over a few months long) and it seems fine to me. No stability or speed issues. I can easily run iperf going at a full gigabit a second for say 30 minutes without a problem. The same with copying 120GB from one port to the other using CIFS.

Further on the wireless performance. The dual chain aspect seems to be working well. I have seen speeds up to 8MB/sec or 9MB/sec easily. Even with a wall between the unit and laptop, etc. It performs at least as well as my Linksys 610N I had before this, much better when further away because of the better antenna.

Sounds promising but I hope the switch issue won't come up later because not all of the Atheros 8316s are affected, just "a few" of them.

its not my problem its mikrotik problem(this device only just example - this problem for all mikrotik device)
yes mikrotik can change this parameter as they want(for technological reasons) and yes you can see on it as gift if its more as default - but it must be not small as it describe in technical specification. and mikrotik simply must define this parameters in technical documentation. because when potential buyer select device - must know all its key specification.
for what reason mikrotik deliberately hide this information - i'm not understand

I've never heard of such a law. If my TV has less ram than another TV of the same model and both work, didn't I still get what I paid for? Linksys and other vendors has frequently changed the flash quantity in models of thier routers without notice and they do not publish the specification for it.

Frankly this brings to my mind Matthew 20:1-15.

If my TV has less ram than another TV of the same model and both work, didn't I still get what I paid for?

Example with TV is incorrect because for TV ram is not one of key feature.

change and describe basic amount - you can not see difference in this terms ?

I WANT TO GET RESPONSE FROM REPRESENTATIVES MIKROTIK TO RESOLVE THIS SITUATION BEFORE I WILL TAKE OTHER ACTION !!!

its secret - no! but why not describe it in product doc ? Аnd then, no one not have any questions about it. if it more, ok - its gift.
but now situation is not normal, if buyers see what some people have the same device with 128MB and his device has 64MB
he look on description page for this device and not see anything about this parameter.
what he must thinking after that ?!
or each buyers in this situation should ask question on support forum only for clarify this issue ?

Please drop this issue already or raise it directly with Mikrotik themselves. This is getting you nowhere and quite honestly is frustrating me and probably a lot of users. It's not that it isn't a debatable topic, but there are Pro's and Con's to either way.

They have stated clearly they do not wish to do it the way you have requested (or rather demanded) numerous times, deal with it.

Also personally I find your tone quite offensive and if you were asking me anything, I would sooner be inclined NOT to honor your request then look into it. This might be a language barrier, but still, learn some respect. You cannot 'force' them into doing anything, if you ask nicely they might even listen and consider it. It's allreasy special that mikrotik has this forum and you can ask these questions, they are involved with their customer and are actually active on the forum themselves and give awnsers that can't be found anywhere else. Good stuff! Lots of other companies cannot say the same and will ask you to buy a support contract before even wanting to listen to you.

Now please stop hogging this topic with completely unrelated and repetitive non-sense.

I also think that their response will be interesting and useful to other owners and prospective buyers of Mikrotik products.
p.s. please in future not clutter up topic, where people ask concrete questions and want to get concrete answers to them, I do not think that it is interesting to read then your spatial reasoning on abstract themes.

This is the last time I will reply to you in this topic before asking Mikrotik to ban you from THIS topic.

*I* am the one who started this topic because I was one of the first people in the world to get a hold of the RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN. It's meant to be informative and for people to ask questions regarding this hardware.

Your question is related, sure. But.... your question has been answered twice by Mikrotik officials and also other members have answered your question. You are not satisfied with your answer, that happens. But just bashing your head against it and irritating the hell out of the people who are trying to help you is not helping your case.

I and others have asked you to stop. Further, I believe it's common logic that your question goes beyond what this topic or even forum is for (any forum for that matter). Please contact Mikrotik through official ways. If you approach them kind enough, I'm sure they will be willing to help you if needed. If you bought some units and needed it to have 128MB and got a standard 64MB unit (no luck for you, karma?) which cannot be used for your purpose. Ask them what can be arranged. Don't start screaming like a out-of-control child while jumping up and down and threatening them with bogus laws and what not..... It only makes people NOT like you which in turn means they will not listen to you anymore and NOT help you.

Now I do not agree with your statement and have explained this, so I will not repeat it again. You clearly share a different view. That's allowed, we have a free world. Please, open a new topic and scream and shout as much as you want. Just stop harassing other people's topics with off-topic nonsense and aggravating them.

yes official Mikrotik answer on first question, but may be you not have seen what on second question they not answer
WHY THIS PARAMETER NOT DESCRIBE IN TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION - IT MUST BE DESCRIBED !!!
Now I do not agree with your statement
But i do not agree with your statement(when you respond to the questions posed by official representatives Mikrotik, not to you and when you're trying to intimidate me)
you do not even pay attention to the fact that in the last message I have not even interested in my version of why RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN - is 64MB.
I just want one - why this option is not described in the documentation????, so I think that it is very interested in many other people.
and one more thing - the fact that you opened this thread does not give you the right to behave rudely, to answer for others and intimidate.
Communicate more with you, I do not intend, and is still waiting for a response from representatives of Mikrotik.
WHY SIZE OF FLASH IS NOT DESCRIBEDIN THE TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION and if for such a question I've got BANNED - well, that's MUCH WILL SAY ABOUT MIKROTIK, but I hope that will not happen.

I have asked him kindly to leave this topic (a few times) and start his own, or contact Mikrotik through another way, but he insists to harras this topic and the people trying to contribute.

Hopefully that way he'll learn. I have also reported his posts as beying offensive and rude.

To clarify how to ports are connected, here is a block diagram. We will include it in the manual too:
RB2011 wireless.png

Hi there,

The block diagram seems to indicate that any traffic from FE to GE ports will be managed by the CPU. Is that correct? If so, has anyone tested the FE to GE throughput?

BTW - there is a law of consumer protection, which requires the seller to provide all the information about selling they product/service.

Don't meant to stir stuff, but I think Neohunter's point is that he wasn't told what he will get. And he feels cheated when someone got double the flash memory. Maybe cultural / language differences prevent him from articulating it well.

And as someone who is considering buying a router board product, this interests me too. I agree with the other forumer's views that Linksys etc don't mention the amount of flash on their products. True, and it doesn't matter for the casual consumer. But for someone who wants to load DD-WRT or similar, there is a difference between a wrt54g-v2 and wrt54g-v5. (I have been there myself)

The situation reminds me of a lottery with Dell Monitors a few years ago. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/de ... ottery.htm It wasn't a problem for the casual user, but gamers and power users noticed. The forums were flooded with complaints and hidden codes on how to detect the panel type. Dell replaced the panel for anyone who asked, but it struck a wrong note with many of their customers. Dell explicitly mentions IPS panels nowadays.

Routerboard products are for the power user, and 64 / 128 GB can make a huge difference in the capabilities of the product. Perhaps Microtik can consider adding a one liner stating minimum 64 GB Flash somewhere?

When you buy something, and there is a lottery going on "every tenth person will get a free gift", is that also worth complaining about? that not all people get the gift?

Like I said, ALL RouterBOARDs ship with minimum 64MB NAND. You should always expect that, unless specified otherwise (like in the case of CCR).

Agree with your logic, just saying that it is good to set the expectations about the product in the documentation before people start complaining.

if test from one link on FE and one link on GBit - CPU can easily saturate FE port. If you check porformance test, you would see, that RB2011 can saturate all FE ports and send all the data out Gbit port.

Did anyone test RB2011 with APC UPS through USB or RJ45 serial? Does RB2011 USB port power out DC voltage?
Hi Normis and Janisk
Please clarify my question. Because I can`t find user guide, which includes information regarding hardware things.

Hi, I just got a new device, trying to configure, but I am unable to connect to 192.168.88.1?

Tried different PC's, tried direct connect, tried via switch, no go.

Any advice?

I noticed that when I reset my new device it went into CPE mode. To talk to a router that is in CPE mode you need to manually configure an IP address on your computer's ethernet port (such as 192.168.88.2/24) and then connect a cable between your computer and the ETH1 port on the router. Only the ETH1 port will respond in CPE mode.

I have two new devices, one works fine, one does not.
I'll give a reset a try, if no go, probably return for a new unit.

Did a reset using microswitch on back, and the device came back to life.
Weird, but easier than a swap.

Thx.

HI, ALL!

I plan to buy new MikroTik RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN with Atheros 8327 swich ship inside.

Could anybody confirm that this router will support 802.1Q Trunking same in same way as Mikrotik RB493G?

What difference is between RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN and RB493G in terms of performance (only) ?

Second question is about USB port.. Should I use power adapter as for 493G or +5 power for USB is on-board?

I got the answer from support:
1. RB2011 switch chip unfortunately doesn't support IEEE 802.1Q, you can check
more on Atheros 8327 switch chip functionality here:

Isn't this just the limitation of RouterOS, and not the chip itself?
Qualcomm-Atheros mentions these features on their AR8327 web page:
- Full VLAN support including QinQ and VLAN tag insertion and removal, with IVL and SVL
- VLAN translation and mapping
so why are they not fully supported?

Hi test0912,

don´t worry about the IEEE 802.1Q function, perhaps Mikrotik was not implementing or
activating it in RouterOS for this RouterBoard model. As I was understanding it right the RB2011 was starting as a Low Budget
or so called Low Cost series and there fore I mean it is very powerful and sorted with many ports and functions.

Perhaps you should take another RB493G for your proposal.

@Dobby Thnx's! :)

@test0912 On your question about the +5V supplied by the USB port or not. I just did a quick test with 2 different OTG adapters, a few USB sticks and a portable HDD.

Both OST adapters worked. These are cheap adapters I bought through dealextreme. The first one was this one and the second one was this one. The second one seemed to be the best fit because the plug fits best inside the metal window in the housing.

If you are looking for these, dealextreme is cheap and these seem ok quality but beware of going on a shopping spree, sometimes you actually get what you pay for.... Keep in mind shipping sometimes could take up to a month, but hey, it's free!

All the USB sticks worked without a problem. The HDD did not. Mostly on low powered ports the disk will click that it's trying to spinup, but nothing in this case. So there is not a lot of amps going to this port. Adding external power is always a safe bet ofcourse.

Hi,

i also just get a brand new RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN.
I´am a very beginner with RouterOS but i did managed to install my Wireless connection (2.4Ghz) and VPN to an IPcop...
So everything is almost fine.

I did noticed that the W-LAN receiver did have some problems on my modell.
This is the way my AP is installed.
Aufstellung.jpg
And now take a look at the singal levels.... they differ up to -20dBm.
different.jpg
I think there is something wrong with my Router.
Can anybody help me?

Yours Andreas (from germany)

Actually, I believe his question is pretty clear?

I checked on my RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN and mind you that I am using different antenna's (Using an Aruba kit with dual polarity omni's). I see some difference, but not so much as you are seeying. Allthough the values fluctuate for me too depending on where I am and how I'm holding my device.

So, I don't know if you have much to worry about, a little fluctuation is too expected I believe, but interested in hearing other people their exprience.

Thank you for your response,

After a bit playing around with some wifi clients the strange thing to me is
that the signal strengh is only different for my thinkpad x121 (uses b/g/n).
If i connect with my Archos MP3 player the singnal strengh ist almost identical (+ - 3dBm).

It sounds like your thinkpad radio may reduce the power and higher speeds. It does not seeme like a Mikrotik issue.

Hi,

from what I read on

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Sw ... troduction

There is no mention of 802.1Q Support.... only a VLAN Tablesize is mentioned. This is indeed >0 for the 8327. I find this a little bit misleading. How far does VLAN Support on this device go? And what are the features of the 8227 (FE on the 2011 boards?)? Is this really a chip, that falls in the "Others" Category? Can I Configure the FE Ports in any way? A specific feature or scenario overview would be really really great! :).

Whats the throughput you guys are getting on the Gig ports? I tested with jperf and the max was 225Mbps between two hosts connected to the same switch group. Is this normal?

Using iperf of file copies I can easily reach the full Gigabit, even full-duplex. So I don't know what's going on, but this is most likely a configuration issue. Do you see CPU usage rise when you are copying or using jperf/iperf? If so, your switch group is not working. Switching costs 0% CPU.

Perhaps you will led fullerms to reach this goal also, by showing him up a small solution in more details!?

Hey Dobby. The only thing to be able to reach full wirespeed gigabit transfers is to put the ports in a switched mode. This can be archieved by selecting one of the ports as "Master" port and making the other ports a "slave" port to that port. And that's it, the are switched.

So for instance
Port 1: Internet connection
Port 2: LAN Uplink
Port 3: Server
Port 4: Server
Port 5: Server

Go into the configuration of port 3, 4 and 5 and select that port 2 is the "Master port". That's it. :) You will then have created a switch between port 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Further, I believe the LAN ports of the RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN to support VLAN's. I have the following setup.

RB2011 Port 2 : LAN Uplink
With VLAN 0, 10, 20 and 30

Then through some other dumb switches, I have an OmniTik connected and on the port that is connected to the switch I also have VLAN 10, 20 and 30. On the OmniTik I have 3 SSID's using VirtualAP's and each of these have been bridged to one of the VLAN's. Works beautyfully. My RB2011 provides DHCP, DNS, routing, etc. and de OmniTik is a pure basestation with multiple SSID's. The traffic over the LAN is seperated, DHCP also works in the seperate VLAN's, etc.

So according to me, it works. Maybe some more advanced function like tagging and untagging or other such things does not, but I don't know about that.

Hello,

I got this router a week back, it is working perfectly fine except for one problem I have been trying to solve for couple of days now.
The problem is that I am unable to place voip calls using my iphone, I am having NAT issues only with iphone.
If I use grandstream or siemens all work fine.
The problem started with VOIP and Video calls from my iphone, while playing around with it I disabled the all the services, then I started seeing the video on
both sides but the voice still one way.
I am using Growndwire as well as bria softwares , they both have the same problem.

It is only with IPHONE.
Thank you for trying to help me with this issue.

Hello ,

The issue is solved now, there was nothing to do with the router. I had to WIRESHARK the traffic going out of the IPHONE.
The IPHONE was sending a TOS that was not understood by the router, when I set that to zero ,in the IPHONE software, everything worked perfectly.
I could not find the TOS settings on the router.

Thank you for your help, now we know the root cause.

By the way my uPNP was not enabled (Under /ip uPNP)

Regards
Tedd.

in '/ip firewall mangle' it is possible to alter or just check TOS values of the packets.
you can read about that in manual at wiki.mikrotik.com

Guys, sorry for the stupid question, but is there any way to rack mount this particular model?

Because what I see from the product line, you either have to go with the rack mount model without wifi (and that doesn't have any way to connect a wifi module) or this one with with wifi, but only wall mountable.

No question is so stupidity!
Because what I see from the product line, you either have to go with the rack mount model without wifi (and that doesn't have any way to connect a wifi module) or this one with with wifi, but only wall mountable.
Did you ever thought about the option, to buy the RB2011UAS-RM or the RB2011L-RM model of this router and
connect a WLAN AP to the RB2011 series to have WLAN?

And by the way, where you would put this router with antennas in the rack?
The rack is covering up most of the WLAN stream and narrow down often the signal strength.
Only my poor opinion but so you solve out the problem easily.

Sat Jan 05, 2013 6:10 pm

hello,

the RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN is my first mikrotik device, so sorry if I will ask any crazy questions :D
I read manual and have played with it, but I'm unsure with some topics.

1. fast path - I understand it in way that packets can be routed in hardware (switch chip) and CPU is not used.
Because in this box are two Atheros switch chips - 8327 and 8227 I assume that it applies only for communication on ports
on the same switch chip, for example:
eth1 to eth2 - fast path possible (both ports on 8327)
eth8 to eth9 - fast path possible (both ports on 8227)
eth1 to eth9 - NOT possible cause both ports are on different SW chips

is that right or am I missing anything?

2. Does anyone know what is the difference between vlan configuration in
Switch->VLAN and
Interface->VLAN ?

I assume the switch->vlan works with SW hardware and writes the info directly to it. But what is conjuntion with VLAN configuration in interface section?

Thanks for any tips and information.

Hi Bmann,
1. Yes. Packets can be transferred in hardware. But CPU will be used. For example RB1000 doesn`t have switching chip, but it can provide fast path using it`s CPU.
2. "Switch->VLAN" happens in Layer2, "Interface->VLAN" happens in Layer3 like a Cisco.
For example Cisco Layer2 VLAN:
OfficeCore#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
OfficeCore(config)#vlan 100
OfficeCore(config-vlan)#
Cisco Layer3 VLAN:
OfficeCore#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
OfficeCore(config)#interface vlan 100
OfficeCore(config-if)#
So the main difference is you can configure IP address on VLAN which configured in Layer3. But you are right switching chip gives ability to use Layer2 VLAN on RouterOS.

Hi otgooneo,

regarding 1/
I've thought that when general purpose CPU is involved so kernel is used for handling this traffic.
Do you know how is done and how is it possible that CPU can do fast path without kernel?
Or what am I missing?

regarding 2/
thanks for kick off. I see it now as hw switch baked in router :-)

Re: RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN Questions Topic

Fri Jan 11, 2013 5:11 am

start question again.
explain what exactly you want to succeed
Actually, I believe his question is pretty clear?

I checked on my RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN and mind you that I am using different antenna's (Using an Aruba kit with dual polarity omni's). I see some difference, but not so much as you are seeying. Allthough the values fluctuate for me too depending on where I am and how I'm holding my device.

So, I don't know if you have much to worry about, a little fluctuation is too expected I believe, but interested in hearing other people their exprience.
depend purpose/goal as said/stated above.
if you care about throughput/speed for example, try:
1. Turn second TX/RX chain[only 1st enabled by default]
2. switch to 40Mhz mode if spectrum isn't wasted in install location.
3. switch to N mode, turn on WMM, turn on DFS, bring on ANI and recalibration.

if you care about range only then 802.11b, 2Mbps mode, directional/narros antennas on both ends and boosted TX power[no ANI, manual TX-power].

also consider getting license for 3.7 band, if you really need more speed[not only MT license mean, but you contry permission].

:) yes really I want to ask this one but dont get me wrong on RB2011x series why leds dont flash/blink?

I just bought one router:) Why led dont flash with network activity on interface? If I need some setup on router, or....?

Does anyone have a problem with the wireless? I have probelm with slow internet speed and high latency. Ehthernet ports works fine. I upgraded firmware of routerboard with version 3.02, but for now the same thing happens.
Download internet speed on ethernet ports is 20Mbps, but on wireless connection speed not exceeding 3-4Mbs. Ping on ethernet ports is 12ms. On Wireless connection, ping is between 225-250ms.

Why is this happening? Some advice to resolve this problem?

Hi all,

Looking for feedback for RB2011UAS. Are they reliable? Any issues with the latest software?

I am looking for a router to allow 2 connections from the same ISP to merge into 1 pipe. I am pretty sure Mikrotik can do that, but I am more worrying about stability.

Any comments?

Thanks.

They are extremely reliable. Although setting up bonding is completely different and it really helps if you control both ends of the link. Your provider my offer MLPPP. You probably want to setup PCC but it works like 2+2 = 2+2

1. If anyone to know, how to change -system routerboard usb mode- from automatic to force-host on this routerboard?

2. Why on my routerboard power-reset option for usb had "not implemented on this hardware"? In specification of routerboard RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN this option is available.

Hi bvladen,

try this

/system routerboard usb set mode=force-host

Not sure about the second question, seems to work on mine.

I still have troubles with the RB2011 recognising my 3G USB modem when the RB751U uses it without issue.

Have fun.

Hi,

Did anyone have success with usb modems on RB2011UAS-2HnD? I upgraded from a RB751G where the usb modems runs without problem. I tryed all the firmwares I could find inc. the newest alfa, like 10 diffent cables, 3 mikro to female usb converters.. All with no success.

Here is some output:

[admin@mikrotik-wan.local] /system resource> /system resource usb print
# DEVICE VENDOR NAME SPEED
0 1:1 Linux 3.3.5 ehci_hcd RB400 EHCI 480 Mbps
1 1:6 HUAWEI Technology HUAWEI Mobile 480 Mbps

[admin@mikrotik-wan.local] /system resource> /tool sms print
receive-enabled: no
port: serial0
channel: 0
secret: 7913
allowed-number:
keep-max-sms: 5000

[admin@mikrotik-wan.local] /system resource> /tool sms set receive-enabled=yes
timeout

Same 'timeout' message when I try send sms.

Any inputs on this? I would hate to go back to using my RB751G, cus I really like everything else on the RB2011UAS-2HnD.

I made a picasa album with some (phone) photo's I've taken. If anyone wants some close up pictures of some part I can make them. The album can be found here.
Just to ask a question on the pictures u hv posted on PICASAWEB. The photo 13 of 19, can i know what type of connecters where use to connect to the MMCX connectors on the motherboard?

I am thinking of changing the external antenna to a higher gain antenna, ie. http://www.l-com.com/item.aspx?id=22943 or http://www.cloudstore.com.my/tp-link/wi ... tenna.html

I need the separate antenna as i'm putting the unit into a rack and the fix external antenna of the RB2011 will be useless in a rack environment.

Pls advice the connecter if it's a MMCX male / female connector that connects to the MMCX connector on the motherboard.

TIA

I used the following pigtails: http://www.interprojekt.com.pl/mmcx-fem ... p-383.html

They are MMCX to N-Female. But you can get them in all the variations you wish of course. :)

It must have 64MB NAND. If for some reason we run out of 64MB chips, we could use bigger ones. Treat this as a surprise gift.
I have won the jackpot! Just received this device with 128MB flash.

yeeeeeaaaaaaah!

Thank you very much for this surprise gift.

What you have achieved real transfer when sending a file via 802.11n to the samba share on the NAS. For me it is 2500 kbytes per second. Is it possible to go faster?

Hello, i've recently bought a RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN to substitute a draytek vigor 2800 broadband for my home network...to make the long story short everything works fine and i'm completely satisfied except for real world wireless performance when used as AP: this is what i get from a wireless n capable device when it's just 10mt (40ft) from the AP without LOS (the link isn't even stable: i lose connection every now and then)

Image

and this is what i get when the same device is in the same room of the AP

Image

i think these results are poor even compared to home-grade AP let alone that these results have been achieved with manual tx-power settings that resulted in more than 25dbm (musch more than country limit here in Italy)...any suggestion? do i miss something or these are completely normal results and i have to look for a stand alone AP to achive better coverage of my home?

If you make POE out only on 100Mbit port --> it is 5port POE out. = unnecesary. We have rb750UP
If you convert Gigabit ports to 100Mbit and poe OUT on all 10ethernet = nice product :D

It is technically possible to have Gigabit ports + poe out?

I am looking for router that will :

1) Work with 100 Mbit Download / 50 Mbit Upload PPPoE internet connection
2) QoS
3) Work with 3000-4000 connections at same time
4) Work stable as 2.4 Ghz AP
5) Be very stable overall
6) CPU won't hit 80-90 % usage

Will RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN be enough or I should set router on some Core 2 Duo PC ?

Is this next to the power cable an ethernet port or only the ports on the front are present?
No, this is a serial connection port. You can use any cisco style RJ45 - Serial connector to directly connect to the router and manage it from CLI.
cisco cables do not work with mine you have to know that cisco's console cable isnt a null modem its a roll over cable and depending on the serial intereface you probably will have mixed result ( a phisical uart will probably work but a usb to serial may not work for instance ( that was my guess from what i tried since i had to make my own cable because my cisco one didn't)

About coverage for floors and rooms, it very depends on building materials. I know here some buildings strongly block 2.4GHz waves.

Hello, i've recently bought a RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN with the wall mount. Unfortunately the wall mounts screw holes (that hold the router on its both sides) is a bit off and the mount blocks the power connector (the router has a regular power connector, not the inside the case version) and it can not plug in. Has anyone faced this problem or is there a different (version of) wall mount?
Thanks, Adam

I haven't tried one of the new style in the wall mount kit but I could believe it doesn't fit. I haven't used those wall mounts in a long time. I have just been mounting the router directly to the wall. If you have a plasma cutter you could easily and quickly modify that mount. 8)

I just went and pulled one out of stock and that tab blocking the power hole could very easily be removed with a cutoff wheel or even bent back with pliers.

But this does need to be fixed in future models of the mount. I would also like to see it adjusted to fit booted cables.

Hi,

I'm having some USB OTG -> USB2Serial problems recently (using Prolific chip). It used to work for me without issues on versions around 5.8 I think. Then during several upgrades I noticed that it's broken. Now I'm on 6.5 and still having problems.
When I connect to serial console on usb2 sometimes it freezes right away, then after several USB resets i get 2 lines from my CISCO and then freeze. I'm not able to work on the console at all. When I do Reconfigure Rate I always get timeout negotiating rate on all speeds until I power reset the USB port.
I use original blue flat CISCO DB9/RJ45 cable. I also do not suspect the OTG failing. I tested the Prolific USB2Serial on my laptop and it works well. I also tried to lower rate down to 9600 with no luck.
Any ideas?

Then I noticed the RJ45 serial port on the RB. What cable do I have to make to do RB RJ45 <-> RJ45 Cisco to make it work?

Thanks for any ideas.

**EDIT**

Rollover RJ45 cable worked well. http://pinouts.ru/NetworkCables/rj45_ro ... nout.shtml

It doesn't ring a bell for me. I have several in active use, sometimes as pure router, sometimes with WiFi but the pattern of them degrading and stopping is not normal in my opinion.

Hello,

I'm planning to build a road(y) proof PC with the RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN in the same casing (see pictures below).
The 2HE casing is built from scrath and is for use in a Pro Audio Rack.
Because the PC has is own PSU I would like to use the PC PSU (12v) to power the RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN.

From the specs of RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN the supported input voltage is "8V - 30V", so the PC PSU should be fine to use in my opion.

Or will the 12v limited the performance of RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN ?
And can I use the 2-pin white socket instead of the round socket?

The chasis looks really nice. Congratulations to it.

Where the RB2011 will be mounted? It is not clear for me from the pictures you have provided.

You can power the RB2011 directly from PC power supply 12V branch (yellow-black). It will not have any influence on the performance. Just the antenas should be outside the metal box if you would like to use its wifi functionalities.

What sockets are you talking about? You can use whatever 12V connector leading outside from your PSU. Just make some reduction to the power in connector of RB2011 if you do not want to solder the wires directly.

There is maybe disadvantage: There will be no power for RB2011 when the PC mainboard will be off because it drives the power supply, so it will be off too...

Hello Jarda,

Thank you for your reply.
The chasis looks really nice. Congratulations to it.
Thanks, a friend of mine, who has a Pro Audio company, did the machining of the parts.
Where the RB2011 will be mounted? It is not clear for me from the pictures you have provided.
The RB2011 will be mounted in front of the motherboard, see picture below.

Image

(motherbord showing on picture is a defected one just for test fiting, I wanted to put in an Intel S1200KPR Server Board (which is unfortunally out of production))
You can power the RB2011 directly from PC power supply 12V branch (yellow-black). It will not have any influence on the performance. Just the antenas should be outside the metal box if you would like to use its wifi functionalities.
I'm planning to switch to longer antennas (with pigtails) which come in the front panel of the PC, so the antennas come above the 19" rack were the PC will be mounted in.
What sockets are you talking about? You can use whatever 12V connector leading outside from your PSU. Just make some reduction to the power in connector of RB2011 if you do not want to solder the wires directly.
The newer version of the RB2011 board has an extra 2-pole connector, see picture (red square).

Image

(the LEDs on the RB2011 board will be routed to the front panel by lite pipes, except for the very anoying blue led which I wil tape of)
There is maybe disadvantage: There will be no power for RB2011 when the PC mainboard will be off because it drives the power supply, so it will be off too...
You're right, maybe it's better to use a separate PSU for the RB2011 to have power all the time.

I would like to say "thanks" for such a good and stable router.
Using one in my office network.
Want to use another one at home, but they lack 5GHz and it's critical. Do you plan to sell one? :)

Hello,

I've recently got this MikroTik RouterBoard RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN (firmware 3.18)
and would like some help on solving some networking issues.

I'm using this RouterBoard as an normal gateway router for my devices in my apartment.
just to let you know before-hand i'm not familiar with RouterOS at all neither the configuration syntax used by MikroTik.
Mainly used the web utility and since the last 24 ours i've noticed WinBox (version 6.28 now) "yeey"

first i've setup an basic setup for notebook and xbox(360/ONE) in the web utility.
wireless connections are all stable and good, however on the 1Gbit port of the Routerboard it totally collapse the
connection when i want to advertise only on 1Gbit full duplex. (the 1Gbit port is literally going offline on the RouterBoard)

notebook is a Qualcomm Atheros AR8172/8176/8178 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)
and already replaced the cables RJ-45 CAT-5e / CAT 6
when turning advertise with 10mbit and 100mbit back the port is going up again really weird stuff.

Next to this i got my console xbox(360/ONE) attached to 1Gbit port with auto negotiation,
however i don't get any connection through due to some strict NAT policy that is blocking the connection.
Now i've tried to find the policy for this in the menu of the web utility but couldn't find anything specifically usefull so decided to add a couple of accept rules in the firewall no success either unfortunately.

I'll doing some digging on the WinBox utility if this has better ways to steer this RouterBoard
any help with this is of course highly appreciated :)

Kind Regards,
StaleDevil

Hello everyone,

I apologize if this question has already been answered here, though if it has, I must have missed it while reading the posts on this thread. Recently, I have been looking into MicroTik hardware to offer as a Networking solution to small and medium sized businesses statewide. I wasn't able to find any tests or, at the very least, articles on the rb2011's performance in a small corporate environment. How many active users does this hardware (Rb2011) handle simuntaneously without any Hic-ups or system crashes?

Thanks in advance for any and all replies!

How many active users does this hardware (Rb2011) handle simuntaneously without any Hic-ups or system crashes?
How many vehicles can be carried on a ferry without tipping over? It depends.

Are some vehicles buses and some vehicles "Smart" cars? How many of each exactly? How many are motorcycles? How many are limos? Did the vehicles get loaded properly to balance the ferry in the water? Is the ferry pilot competent enough to slow down before making a sharp turn? Is the ferry pilot going through a nasty divorce and drinking on duty? Is the sea smooth or choppy?

How many active users depends on what the users are doing, how often they do it, whether or not the Internet connection is under attack, how competent the admin is at optimizing the firewall / queue rules, what exactly the admin wants to do to the users' network connections (rate limits, block certain sites, mirror traffic to an IDS?), which version of RouterOS the admin chooses to run on it, and dozens of other variables.

I can confidently answer your question, as phrased, by saying that an RB2011 can probably handle between 0 and 1000 users behind it. Unfortunately, that doesn't do much to help you. The CCR1072 would probably be between 0 and 10,000 users. The Cisco 7206VXR with NPE-G2 would probably be between 0 and 10,000 users.

The "without any Hic-ups or system crashes" makes life very difficult for any vendor's product. Define what is an unacceptable hiccup? A hiccup which permits traffic to pass normally but doesn't let the admin use winbox until a reboot at 2 AM may, or may not, be acceptable.

Thanks for the quick reply!

A hiccup that keeps network traffic flowing normaly would definetly be acceptable. My only concern is anything that stopped the network flow. What I really wanna do is setup a simple firewall, nice and tight, without rules that the client doesn't deem as absolutely necessary, as well as proxy. We will also set up a network monitoring server to generate graphs about network usage in general to monitor all the traffic that passes through the appliance, since it does support SNMP. Aside from that, the only use that hardware will ever see might be as a dedicated access point for a few WiFi projects as well as hotspot setups.

Does the xbox survive the partner device only advertising 1G full duplex with other vendors' equipment? Does the notebook? If so, you may want to create a support ticket with MikroTik. If not, you are blaming the wrong device.

As part of the trouble shooting process you may want to load an earlier version of RouterOS on your RB2011. We are making the assumption that the version of RouterOS on your device matches the version number you gave for WinBoX, 6.28.

[RANT]MikroTik keeps adding new features to the "stable" version of RouterOS which have a tendency to make every version of RouterOS a brand new beta with unexpected new problems. 6.18 seemed to have some feature maturity and be pretty reliable in my networks. I do not yet have faith in any version after 6.20. I am still beta testing a few of the more recent versions, 6.25 through 6.27, at various quiet locations around my networks. 6.8 should have been a beta of a new major version. 6.18 could have been the newversion.0. Version between 6.18 and 6.27 could have been betas for newversion.1. 6.28 probably should have been yet another new major version. Too many new features planted deep in the system.[/RANT]
notebook is a Qualcomm Atheros AR8172/8176/8178 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)
and already replaced the cables RJ-45 CAT-5e / CAT 6
when turning advertise with 10mbit and 100mbit back the port is going up again really weird stuff.
If it works in the default configuration, why would you want to neuter the devices' ability to maintain some sort of connectivity in the event of an ethernet cable deteriorating because someone ran over it with their chair a few hundred times? What problem are you solving by changing the defaults?
Next to this i got my console xbox(360/ONE) attached to 1Gbit port with auto negotiation,
however i don't get any connection through due to some strict NAT policy that is blocking the connection.
Now i've tried to find the policy for this in the menu of the web utility but couldn't find anything specifically usefull so decided to add a couple of accept rules in the firewall no success either unfortunately.
You will have to ask a search engine what the meaning is of the exact error message the xbox is giving you. Then you may have to show us your NAT configuration so we can tell you what you broke by changing default options which tend to work pretty well. [Of course, the problem could be a bug in the new fasttrack code.] The NAT rules are configured under "IP" "Firewall" on the "NAT" tab. Mostly you need to know what the xbox thinks is wrong before you change random options in the MikroTik. It may be that a device upstream from the MikroTik is the actual culprit for this error. You did not provide us enough information to make an educated guess.

When you have more detailed information, you may want to post your question as a new thread. It doesn't really belong in this one.

Hello Lambert,

thanks for the information thus far.
will test some more in the older routerOS versions as mentioned.

1Gbit should be available 1Gbit on notebook and xbox (360/ONE).
now what i wanted to test is the create a static network advertise that only 1Gbit devices can run on it thus disabling the 10mbit and 100mbit.
anyway i'll do some more tests if i need any additional help on that, you'll hear me ;)
however i did fixed the routing issue for connection to xbox (360/ONE) works at least now, not optimal, but it's a start.

thanks for the feedback thus far :)

Cheers StaleDevil

PS:
anyone know how to resolve loss of bandwidth on the gigabit switch ports
if i attach my notebook directly on the WAN cable i'll get around 125~112 Mbps down
but when i have it connected through the MikroTik (port1 WAN gateway and port2 to the notebook) i'll get only 76~64 Mbps down.

any ideas?

Did you manage to turn the leds off on thsi device?

Port 8 suddenly stopped working. Light won't come on when you plug a device in. Not sure how to trouble shoot.

Have you tried making a cross connection with another port, also with a different cable? If the port still doesn't come online that way, it's probably broken. Maybe because of a power surge or something like that from the other side?

Hello
I'm Mikrotik newbie and just bought RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN model.
Before purchased. My target is to use for load balance + Wifi N 300MB speed.
After connected wifi with my laptop. The signal showing as Wifi N but the speed only 54 Mbps.
Is there any body can confirmed. This model support or not support wifi speed up to 300 Mbps.
If not, I would looking for new AP to connect with.
If yes, Is there any body can share the configuration?

Thanks for your kind info.
check your laptop wifi module specs, possibly it can't work faster by design. also check wireless config on RB, it should be 2GHz B/G/N or N only. channel width 20/40 MHz CE . also if advanced mode used - try to set default data rates and tx power for defaults. also check signal quality..

and don't expect real 300MB, with good signal and good wireless module on a remote side you can reach ~100-120MB

Thanks for your kind info.
By follow your all suggestion. I can get speed up to 300 Mbps already. (The status of connection).
One more question. Disable/Enable "WMM" will improve or drop Wifi performance?
The default setting is "Disabled"
this option mostly for mobile devices to enable power saving... i'm not sure will it drop performance or not, but if you don't use wifi on your mobile or use it rarely - maybe it'll be better to leave it disabled

Re: RB2011UAS-2HnD-IN Questions Topic

Hello everyone and a Happy New Year!

I do use Mikrotik devices and I am very pleased with their work. I had a new RB2011UiAS-2HnD in a box for few months and did forget about it, then when my D7 Archer started doing annoying things (power surge maybe) I remembered about it and use the RB2011 with an aDSL modem and must say, despite being cheaper of some of my routers, that's the best one I had at home. No idea why didn't use one earlier at home, since I use Mikrotik a lot with customers ...

Anyway, everything works great, don't miss the AC WiFi for now home that the D7 Archer had, but I do have one issue. It might just be me not doing it properly, but I did make some tests before I write here.

The USB storage. Works fine with a 32GB usb flash drive. Kinda "works" with a 2.5" USB 1TB external drive with no external power. It does though play crazy sometimes, couldn't really format it, so I formatted it under Linux first and I can't copy a file (except let's say small text files like subtitles) to the drive while it is connected on the router.
I do have another smaller 500GB WD 3,5" drive that has external power but this one can't be seen at all in "disks".

So my question, if anyone else has played with using the USB as NAS.

Are external hard drives suitable or is the USB port too weak to power them on? That's my feeling, since USB flash drive works perfect, but not the 2.5" external HDD.
Would then the Mikrotik 5V USB power injector help (that's what I think and have ordered one, just in case)?
What could then be wrong with the older external HDD that is self powered?

Would appreciate if someone has an experience with that and could drop few lines! Thanks in advance!

Ivo
