Routerboard Hardware wish list

Wed Jan 23, 2013 12:24 am

Hello, everyone!
Thanks Mikrotik team for looking after our everyday needs and bringing new gear to us on regular basis.
unfortunately there are still some gaps to fill :)

still waiting for Mikrotik team to release dual polarity high gain cpe (analogue to ubnt nanobridge M5-25) with nice parabolic reflector, integrated radio, just plug in ethernet cable :) same as great sxt, but for distances like 10-20km.

Second thing I would like to see competitor to ubnt toughswitch with gigabit poe and RouterOS functionallity, something like 1100AHx2 with 12 gigabit PoE out ports!

I believe, i am not only one who is waiting for this kind products!

Routerboard Hardware wish list

Wed Jan 23, 2013 8:46 am

23-25dbi antenna would fit the bill. Also a 2ghz with 27-30 dbm with 19dbi antenna would be great.

Do not consider a RouterBOARD device with SFP interface? Any timeline when SFP will come?

My Wish List:

1. An internal AP with "beamflex" Ruckus style antenna. Either 802.3af compliant or Mikrotik make a bigger PoE switch.
Also this AP must blend in well with its environment such is this Zyxel or the Ubti internal APs.
http://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/products_ser ... .shtml?t=p
I would prefer 802.3af compliant as nearly all business class APs have this.

2. RB450G updating to stay competitive with the new RB-2011 series but keep its same form factor.

3. 12 Port PoE switch

4. Option to buy rackmount equipment unbranded

5. VDSL/ADSL built in to a RB

6. Central AP controller building into ROS

lol I don't want much :)

+1 For higher gain SXT (25dBi).

Would also love a 16 port GB POE switch/router otherwise I am going to have to settle for tough switches.

Something akin to the Patriot Gauntlet and Seagate wireless HD enclosures. Also would like a variant that has both sata and mSATA and raid capabilities.

We would like to see a CCR with 24 copper GigE and 4 SFP+ with two hot-plug PSUs (DC and AC option).
This would be a real enterprise/ISP device.

My wishes for desktop routers:

- No more gigabit+fast, all gigabit, I guess 12 ports is the next step.
- But 2 rows of ports, so that the unit can be narrower, but it should fit on a 1U drawer.
- An external plug for the power supply
- A power switch
- A cheap BaseT SFP module so that I can use the slot for something (not interested in rewiring for FTTH)
- A VDSL2 SFP module, better.
- Simultaneous dual band, or the wireless is not interesting
- Wireless faster than 300Mbps
- Replaceable wireless card
- Standard USB port, not mini
- USB usable for terminal access
- PoE+ supply on all ports, but maybe with limited budget so as to keep the unit fanless
- Faster in order to support some UTM functionality, but keeping fanless
- Cheap and low-power short-range 10GBaseT on some ports to move mainstream computing forward, but keeping fanless
- LEDs that can change colour in each port, not all together
- SODIMM slots, but keeping small
- XQD slot, but keeping small

I profit to emphasize some software points:

- Ability to shutdown and reset from the touchscreen
- HFS+ and AFP support
- Support internal forwarding of link-local packets which do not break the network (e.g.: mDNS)
- Write all desktop software in a truly portable manner.

Wish for us:

1. - MIMO parabolic CPE. I know Sextant but parabolic antena is better. Somethink like UBNT Nanobridge
2. - Indoor MIMO routerboard with RSMA connectors. RB751 have only MMCX, RB751G is EOL, RB951G have NO external connector :(
3. - Indoor cheap routerboard with at least 1port POE out (for powering CPE)

Thanks

- 4 or more x 10GBit/s CCR routers

- Wireless LAN controller ROS feature, with environment monitoring (it would be super if the controlled multiple APs could collaborate in getting max throughput from/to clients, and self-arrange frequencies)

- 48 port GBit/s SFP + 2 or 4 port 10 GBit/s SFP+ CCR, 1RU

Darvnieks, what about the SEXTANT G?
Sextant G. It is great in middle of nowhere with no other transmitters. I tested in real life, I had to make P2P link in Middle of Dublin, distance 900M, With sextant on the scan I could see 25 netwoks, 10 of them Mine and they were located at the back of antenna, With good signal I could get max 20mbps and very unstable, Using Ubiquiti Nanobridge, scan showed just few networks and got perfect 80mbps tx and rx at the same time. So cheap plastic casing is not an option, I am looking for real antenna with metalic reflector avoiding interference from back.

Re: Routerboard Hardware wish list

Sat Feb 08, 2014 2:42 pm

So I'll guess I drop in here, reactivate this old thread and post my wish list:

Something like a CCR with
- 2x10GE SFP and more than 8xSFP GE (Tilera's TILE-Gx8072 has 8x10GE XAUI for example - that would mean 2x10GE and 24GE!) - Copper in MAN services is definitely a dead end. I don't want to mess with additional hardware, such as media conversion centers. In short: a SFP-only mixture between the routing power and features of the CCR and the port density and L2-features of the CRS. Maybe combine the CCR's CPU with the switching chips from the CRS?
- redundant power supply (and maybe 48V DC support).
- integrated Out-of-Band management engine which runs independently from the mainboard/OS for recovery when RouterOS goes nuts again

THAT would be great! Hell, I'll even throw more than 3.000 €uros after such a device, which still is less than 1/10th of all the competitor's pricing.

Slightly OT: Software enhancements:
- Metro Ethernet Ring support
- Easier (I'll say "cisco-style") configuration management. Replacing dead units with backed-up configurations is an absolutely PITA.
- Ability to move management to a dedicated VRF (but that's mostly a software issue)
- Full-featured L2TP LNS/LAC
- Ability to push PPP users to different VRFs by RADIUS attributes
- Fix your SNMP stack, it sucks.
- Fix your Routing engine - BGP full table loading time is ridiculous for a device with this much CPU power.

Feel free to comment. Your move, MikroTik ;-)

x86_64Bit RouterOS
- with support for more then 2 GB
- and support for ECC / REG RAM
- better support of multicore X86_64Bit CPUs or the multicore usage Intel Core i7 & Xeon E5

WLAN Controller
- likes a MikroTik Linux OS System with TheDUDE as a Service
- with Hardware for Fast Roaming supported on Layer2 & Layer3
- A real Free Radius Server inside and a 2nd one for HotSpot and WLAN guests
likes the software UBNT is offering would be great but more like TheDUDE

A MikroTik coded APP with MikroTik logo
- for Android
- for iOS
(VPN, WinBox and all other Windows tools offered by MikroTik)

New TheDUDE version
- for Linux, MacOS and Windows
- TheDUDE APP (less functions) for Smartphones
- TheDUDE APP (more functions) for Tablets

New SwitchOS Version
- Real Layer2+ & Layer3 capabilities like other vendors are offering
- greater switches 24 + 6 SFP/SFP+ ports, 48 + 6 SFP/SFP+ ports
- real fast switch chips inside for wire speed
- switch functions like greater vendors are offering

For all RouterBoards
- More Dual Core or Quad Core CPUs (PPC, MIPSBE)
- more RAM
- XQSD card support
- Each new RouterBoard with a free miniPCIe slot
- with mSATA, modem (SIM slot) and WLAN support

RB800 daugtherboards
- with SFP ports
- more RAM

- miniPCIe slots (+ SIM slot)

Whole CCR series
- dual PSU units from MikroTik
- hot swap able PSU units
- miniPCIe slot with mSATA support (logfiles, plugins, updates, config saving,...)
- ECC RAM support
- IPS/IDS support by using suricata or Snort
- VPN support for all CCR models :D

SSL + MACsec
SSTP compatible (TSL1.0/TSL2.0)
PPTP
PPPD (like PPTP but over SSH daemon and without security lacks)
IPSec (DES, 3DES, AES 64,128,256) + MACsec
L2TP over IPSec
OpenVPN complete (TCP & UDP)
BGP/MPLS L3VPN
Also IPSEC with virtual interfaces so I can setup my RB to connect to Amazon's AWS VPC/VPN
Better support for L2TP with no IPSEC and plain shared secret authentication method

Whole RouterBoards series
- 90 % if all new boards with a miniPCIe slot + SIM likes the RB953GS-5HnD
- more RouterBoards with daughterboard option (one daugtherboard should fit in all RBs)
- more RAM
- VPN acceleration chips from Exar or build in
- miniPCIe and miniPCI VPN cards for older RouterBoards
- miniPCIe and/or miniPCI cards for speeding up DPI

New devices by using TILERA hardware
- Squid + Squidguard (HTTP Proxy, Reverse Proxy)
- HAVP + clamAV (transparent AV Proxy)
- like DansGuardian content filtering
- IDS/IPS with snort and suricata (Servers + miniPCIe & SIM Slot for 3G/UMTS Alarm & Sensors)
- greater routers Tile Gx72 & Tile Gx100 with modules bays for network modules
(8 port SFP and copper (GBit/s) & 4 Ports SFP+ (10 GBit/s)) each module with Tile Gx36 core cpu
- Queue handler unit behind the RouterBoard only for massively queue handling

It took a while, but everything is there!
Dynadish is parabolic design with integrated 25 dbi antenna, RB Powerbox is outdoor version of RB750UP, cAP is unifi analogue, capsman is kickass compared to unifi controller and it runs on any RB device. now netmetal has sfp port, only thing we are missing is 24 port gigabit poe switch :) well done!!! thanks to mikrotik team!!!

RB951 with external antenna and xDSL modem integrated in routerboard
integrating modems is a bad idea. you switch provider, say from an xDSL you migrate to a DOCSIS based, the modem is not able to support the new access.

it's a lot better to have consistent routers and access-technology-specific modems.

LCD in the front
USB in the front for 3G modems
Power conector on the back side
internal powersupply
powerfull cpu (tile with 16 cores)
2,4 and 5 ghz (ac)

if this router costs 200-400€ i would buy a huge amout of them because its the absolute best hardware configuration for most use cases!!!!

Antennas like this: http://www.delamar.de/wp-content/upload ... router.jpg
Please describe how you are using wireless short range radios inside racks. Where do you use these racks? Do you provide Wifi in the server room or where?

Hy,

mostly the network/server racks are open.
mostly the racks are located in the middle of the building of small/mid offices

and 19" is much better for professional installations

there is another use for those routers... event supplier
those routers are located in 19" wooden open cases
they use it for tv shows, concerts, festivals and much more kinds of events
also disco and bar installations... all needs 19", wireless & wired

and for private uses...
most new homes have network kables in every room and a central small network rack.
mostly closed... but if the antennas have a BNC or another connector you can easily position the antennas outside the rack

it would be the most universal Router you've ever made!
and people pay the money for a good product!

i am working since ~2008 with mikrotik products and made hundreds of installations with mikrotik from private use to commercial use and datacenters...
i used all forms of hardware... software mikrotik router, rb450, rb951, hap, sextant, sxt, omnitiks, rb2011 in different forms, ahx2, rb433, CCR in all forms, CRS and much more
i also have a huge dude installation to manage and monitor all mikrotiks...

but i need a universal hardware to accomplish all needs or 99% of them.

What you ask is basically a midrange CCR with wireless and antennas on the front panel, right ? The rest is already possible with CCR

yes but more ethernet ports, PoE+, front display, 19" and removeable antennas...

if tile cpus are too expensive... upgrade a CRS (but rename it to RB or CCR :) ) with front antennas in a 19" case

how bout ultra-cheap, ultra-compact devices in HEX/HAP cases powered by MIPS SoC on 1004k cores(1-2-4 cores, 1-2 threads per each, very cold very power-efficient)?
or new SoC on A35 ARM cores, presented/announced by some chipmakers already?

I'd need a CRS125-2S-RM
or anything with two SFP slots at least + 12-24 copper ports.

in my dreams it's arm based of course, so it even would have the guts to actually route traffic not
just switch it. but even the existing crs125 with two SFPs and the same CPU would be great...
i need redundancy on the fibre side.

Removable main storage would be great, at least should be added to CCR series, in fact I don't know why high-end CCRs have removable RAM, but fixed flashes, it is extremely difficult to replace them when fails, and flash do have a life limit.

Cool. Reading posts under this topic, any post now can be linked to some awailable device. amazing. now is time to bring list for next project. now after deploying over 4k mt devices on network I am seeing need for RB750/RB960 with 4 POE-IN and 1 poe-out for building hybrid ethernet network. now most of RB Wifi routers have POE out on ether4, that can power up small cell of 4 houses and add some redundancy. UBNT have released gpon devices powered by POE, now is time for MT to respond with epon and gpon devices. When MT will be releasing EPON hardware?

This. Beefed up CRS125. Faster asking for CCR performance, just better than current. 2 ideally 4 SFPs and maybe a a few of those 24 ports that can do POE.

An hAP mini with LCD screen. The only thing the LCD needs to do is display live traffic on WAN port.

or something nobody else has out

An hAP mini with a built in projector that displays live WAN port traffic on the wall.

or

An hAP mini with video out port that transmits live WAN port traffic to some device.

The current hardware with LCD is a bit pricey to include for free on WISP customer installations. Sub $50 would be great. Instead of a hardware solution, an app the customer could use to view live SNMP data from their CPE or router would work.

The simple ability to use both mPCIe and USB port on the 912 series boards is all I would like.
