multi-queue-ethernet-default

Fri Feb 01, 2013 1:06 am

I have x86 router as NAS server (intel i7, intel pro/1000 ET NIC, ROS5.23) Approximate load is 600+ vpn`s, 300+ Mbit/s and 40+ kpps

[nick@NAS] > interface monitor-traffic ether1
name: ether1
rx-packets-per-second: 39 124
rx-drops-per-second: 0
rx-errors-per-second: 0
rx-bits-per-second: 62.0Mbps
tx-packets-per-second: 42 392
tx-drops-per-second: 0
tx-errors-per-second: 0
tx-bits-per-second: 282.7Mbps

I don`t use any type of queues on this router, only tunnels..
Now the summary cpu load is 12 - 17%

[nick@NAS] /system resource cpu> print
# CPU LOAD IRQ DISK
0 cpu0 19% 12% 0%
1 cpu1 30% 15% 0%
2 cpu2 9% 6% 0%
3 cpu3 16% 9% 0%
4 cpu4 10% 10% 0%
5 cpu5 16% 9% 0%
6 cpu6 8% 7% 0%
7 cpu7 11% 8% 0%

The default for ethernet in "Queue - Interface Queue" is "Ethernet-default". But there is "multi-queue-ethernet-default"..

[nick@NAS] > queue interface print
Flags: D - dynamic
# INTERFACE QUEUE DEFAULT-QUEUE
0 ether1 ethernet-default ethernet-default
1 ether2 ethernet-default ethernet-default
[nick@NAS] >

Can i get an increase in performance if i choose "multi-queue-ethernet-default"?

Intel 1000 ET supports 8 hardware queues..
intel i7 have 8 logical processors...

I asked because too many information about this...

RPS is more artificial (software based). This queue type is more hardware based, so yes there should be performance benefits. You can test it and post your results.

Thats all... no comments no results...
