Hardware for 1gbps pppoe internet

Wed Oct 30, 2013 1:10 pm

I'm one of the few lucky enough to get 1gbps internet at home.

Right now I'm running a 951g-2hnd that can handle 300-400 mbps of torrent traffic.

What will handle the full 1gbps speed ? I'm up to switching to x86 and buying a license if that ends up cheaper than a CCR.

Depending on how crazy you get with your config you can probably get away with an 1100AHx2.

x86 is crazy fast in many ways. However with x86 you need PCIe cards and not PCI if you want good throughput. Cheap PCIe cards don't have very good throughput either, I prefer Intel cards. and a dual core 3Ghz does very well. However a 1100AH or X2 will do 1Gbps just fine providing your not bogging it down with excessive firewall filters or vlans.

Quick update :

Caught a HP Microserver Gen8 at a sale for ~300$ so I went for that.

Installed RouterOS in a ESXi VM (~60 firewall rules, no mangle, no queue, pppoe nat) and these are the results :

Looking to upgrade the cpu to a e3-1230v2 and add another 8gb of ram for a freenas installation as well.
