Yes, and I have a deadline for creating a IPsec VPN, and the only alternative is EdgeRouter. It's better to start reading manuals....

Eagerly awaiting this too.... 600 MHz CPU on current desktop models is just not enough! Hope to see some nice performance benchmarks :D

I didn't buy the RB450G in January because I wanted to wait for its replacement.

I would rather Mikrotik not announce products until they have production finalized, this is really annoying having a product with expected availability of April slip back so much :(.

I understand your frustration ... it drives me mad too  ... rb850gx2 is exactly what I need and I can't wait to get my hands on it ... anyway .. I do not find it a problem if mikrotik guys announce a product before it is actually ready ... it is good to know what is coming up in the near future. This makes planning easier.

The one only thing I don't like is their availability estimate. They never seem to get it right. There was a lot frustration about ccr1009 availability ... hopefully rb850gx2 is not going to take the same schedule but even if it does just give me a proper estimate... say october 2014 or may 2015 or something, yes it is a long wait but it is much easier to plan this way than to postpone a project every month or so ..

Will the 850Gx2 have metarouter support or will it be similar to the RB1100AHx2, with no support?

Currently metarouter does not seem multicore capable.

I am also looking for products that run faster than RB450G but with smaller size. Last week, I got 100M VDSL installed in my house, and the RB450G is a bit busy (CPU hit 100%) if all bandwidth is reached. Before I heard of RB850Gx2, I was hoping the CCR 9 core version can have a smaller factor for residential purpose.

Me - the same!
Because CCR1009 is too big form factor, I am waiting for RB850Gx2. I don't neet so much processor power as CCR1009, but 450G is too slow. I hope RB80Gx2 will be a happy medium:)

I use a lot of RB450Gs to run my WISP and am also looking for some more CPU horsepower in a small form factor. I just deployed a few CCR1009s in the past two weeks and very pleased with the results, but if I have to source NEMA boxes large enough to house them, it's not going to be pretty. Never mind the fact that if I give my tower crews a rackmount unit, it's going to get beat to death. I don't really need the power of the CCR1009 and there really should be something between the two? I guess I'll keep holding my breath for the RB850Gx2?

In my eyes it is a very powerful router, from what the tech specs. are showing.
But I am more interested in the way MikroTik was writing code for the both CPU
cores to use them! If this is matching well and the both core will be used very
clever by RouterOS it could be a really fast router, if not..........

Regardless of RB850Gx2, I am still hoping for a smaller size of CCR1009. I got my first 10M/2M line in 2010, but now it's already 100M/40M for the same price. My ISP is offering 300M/100M this year, and there will be 1G/1G residential service next year. I don't know if the dual core RB850Gx2 can handle such traffic, but a smaller (5 port) CCR should be ideal for that.

I am quite sure that this would be not the problem for this router or RouterBoard.

This can be to much for a so small router, but lets see what is going on.

Same here. Sold away the EdgeRouter as everything I need to do (esp. Policy-based Routing) breaks offload (NAT acceleration) so NAT throughput drops to ~250Mbps.

Also hated the fact that the Ubiquiti fanboys in my country are really arrogant.

Went back to RB2011UiAS which gives me PBR + ~350Mbps NAT throughput and waiting to replace it with the RB850Gx2.

Mikrotik has been working the last year or two on making all of their functions multi-core/multi-threaded because of the CCR design. The CCR is very parralel in nature and thus all their routing and engines needed to be adapted. They have come a long way and a lot of heavily used stuff is now multi-threaded and scales with cores. They have also announced that RouterOS 7.x will feature a new routing engine to extract even more benefit of using multiple cores.

That the CPU architecture is different between this router and a CCR isn't such a big hurdle. They already have separate hardware tree's for them and Mikrotik has shown it's code is quite adaptable between them (Tilera, Mips, PPC, x86, etc.). It's the main code that needs to be multi-threaded and they can use all the code and experience of the CCR in this little box also.

I expect it to be quite a speedy device! :D

Maybe they've withdrawn it, not wanting to create an inbreed competition to their own low-end Tilera-based devices... Or are fine-tuning and testing the code to be the finest possible ever made for a MikroTik router :)

Anyway I'm also eager to try it and replace one or 2 450G and 2011. Dual-core PPC sounds promising.

Yeah agreed can't wait for this thing.

I have a couple of sites now where the 2011's are struggling a bit and for budget reasons don't want to go the CCR route as I want a device with a hardware switch chip.

I know budget wise it still won't work, but the CCR1009 has a switch chip for the first 4 ports. It's performance is also easily 10x of the RB2011, but the price is also 3x to even 4x. :( The 1100AHx2 will also suit your needs easily, but that one is also 2.5x the price.

We'll just have to hold out for the RB850Gx2! It will come, have faith. :)

Haha nice . Didn't even notice the CCR1009 has a switch port , I just assumed it lacked it like all the other CCR's.
I think I pretty much found my replacement device for the 2011's now.

Yeah. But unfortunately it has active cooling (a fan). Not an ideal choice for a fast broadband connection for a home...

Yes it is really sad in my eyes, because those small x86 boxes are also very welcome
for many setups, but it seems that MikroTik is silent going away from this option as I
can imagine it, they prefer or want to sell only their boxes and topics about Soekris,
Alix and other boxes are not longer really wnated insite the forum. As I said it first it
is really sad, because each sold license I thought is also very welcomed.

Here are my both x_86 favorites for the next time:
- Alix APU 1C4
- Soekris net6801 8 Cores / 8 GB

I am not sure if the RouterOS is running smooth on but I will give this boards a try.

Normis, are there any plans of also offering a complete SOHO WiFi router (similar to the RB951G-2HnD or the RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN) based on this processor? This one does not have wireless nor any miniPCI card slots...

Please make it with miniPCIe card slot - that users can change card as needed (802.11N or 802.11ac)

all our 802.11ac protocol products support 802.11n protocol for 5GHz bands. So you can have AP with only N just using configuration. Or you have AP that supports AC/N/A clients if you wish so.

Yes but your actual wifi routers:
rb951-2n, rb951G, rb951Ui, rb2011UiAS-2HnD
is not possible upgrade to 802.11AC :(

Re: RB850Gx2 - Release date?

Thu Aug 07, 2014 8:00 pm

Not really, they are just working hard to get it right when it does come out. They had a projected date for that, but seemingly they have missed it because of some late term problems that have popped up. Or whatever else is going on. This is nothing new, it happens. Mikrotik/Routerboard is kind enough to announce the device before hand, they don't have to do that. Would you then also complain?

It's about the same as complaining about RouterOS v7 not being released yet. It's not done! Or would you rather have it and with a lot of bugs?

This is how product development works. The device will get here, just be patient.

Thanks Quindor. Yes, we encountered an issue that needed to be fixed in the board design before we can start mass production. Sorry that this happened and pushed the previously estimated release date.

Solid and effective quality control procedures are vital, glad to see that you have such. :-)

Have you done any (preliminary) performance tests on this baby? Can you give us any rough hints on this, Normis? You know, just to keep us salivating... :-P

It looks like the RB850 has an appearance in the test rack.

The difference from the RB450G is the position of the port LEDs.

that is an RB450 with FE ports. RB850Gx2 will have ports oriented in the same way as it is for RB450G. As there Ethernet ports are upside down as all Gbit interfaces.

Will we see RB850Gx2 this decade?

Nice delay, dudes. One week more without news and I will be buying an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter.
Next month I will try out the new Alix APU 1C4 together with RouterOS. :D

The EdgeRouter series are also not so hot and fast as announced and spoken about
as I really see it right.

Hello,
Is ROS running fine on the Alix board? I want to buy that board for my super-router project. Currently I need to NAT at 1gbps and my current hardware is not able to handle it.

Thanks.

Re: RB850Gx2 - Release date?

cool. to know where/when you can really buy one, finally :=)
its there would be pre-assembled units(ie RB+case+PSU) sold/packed by MT itself, like 951 and 2011 routers was?
complete(and mass-produced)solution always better in all respects for end-users.
What is the expected throughput increase of this router over the RB2011 ?
not much breathtaking, but considering it will had similar to RB2011 prices, it will be WARMLY welcomed :=)
for further details - check Freescale datasheet on particular chip or family description/prospect. would be about/nearly as 3x times faster as RB2011 or so.
up to 5x if FastPath was really employed in HW(it would work even with conntrack and etc, contrary to 2011).
its 32bit PPC(e500cores?) SoC with relatively fat L1 and L2 caches(RAM bandwith b-neck less notable thus. less latency, faster forwardign and etc), fast internal interconnect(so multi-core versions may shine)&etc
its had HARDWARE(!!!)support for both FastPath and Virtualisation, so expect notable benefits there, thanks to DPAA.
its nowhere comparable to full-blown 64bit e5500 and e6500 PPC cores used in other Freescale chips, but atleast it CHEAPER enough, than those. (but personally i would like to buy such devices too, btw)
even MIPS64-based chips/derrivatives, used by some vendors slightly more expensive and not always shipped in decent quantity.

What's with the negative attitude. Cursing or 'pressuring' on a forum will not make the products get released any sooner. If at all, it will actually depress the developers. Ask kindly, or just stay quiet. Please?

Also, don't 'demand' performance. These devices are not made for you specifically and are supposed to be used in a multitude of situations. Maybe it will fit your performance profile, maybe not. Next to that, instead of coming on here and demanding performance and whatever, why not do the math yourself! You did read all topics about it before posting right?.......RIGHT?

We already know (if you read this topic) that the RB850Gx2 is going to have the same processor PLATFORM as the RB1100AHx2. That one is running at 1066Mhz though and the RB850Gx2 will be running at 500Mhz. So, let's say they have improved a generation over what was in the RB1100AHx2 and thus multiply performance IPC by *sucks on thumb* 1.2. In theory that would mean it would have the equivalent performance of 888Mhz of the old version. Now we devide that through 500 and thus this new device will have about 1,7x less performance then the RB1100AHx2.

Ok, in the absolute best case scenario a RB1100AHx2 can do about 5GBps of routing. No one would ever use it that way though, so adding some rules and some different size packets in the mix it can probably do about *sucks on thumb again* 2,3Gbps in a more realistic scenario. We just said the RB850GX2 can do about ~0,6x the performance of the RB1100AHx2 so that leaves us with an expected performance in a realistic scenario of *drum roll* 1380Mbit!

Having the device do about 1Gbps would make sense in their product portfolio. Even if my IPC guess is wrong and the cores in the CPU have the same IPC it would mean that the device would be able to do at least 1081Mbit in the given scenario. Also, I expect all the of the ports will be switch connected and not CPU connected and most often if not always a switch in a RouterBoard has a 1Gbps CPU uplink thus again having the 1Gbps limit of the CPU make sense. Judging from the posted photo, the little chip is probably the switch chip. Most likely, following Routerboard design choices it will NOT have L3 hardware functions, since it's not a CRS.

Then again, this could be completely wrong, the new chip might have an IPC of twice the one in the RB1100AHx2 or whatever magic pixy dust they have or have not sprinkled on the device. We don't know, but you can make an educated guess, so here it is.

Just to clarify for people who don't read what I typed above:
- It will most likely do about 1Gbps in a fairly realistic scenario.
- Probably 2Gbps in a light queues/filter scenario and below 1Gbps if you use a lot of queues/filters
- No clue on NAT, ask someone with a RB1100AHx2 what max NAT speeds they can achieve and calculate it through
- Probably hardware accelerated VPN's, maybe not

well, as one of solution there would be rb850gx4 model with four-core SoC rather than twin core. 5W consumption instead of 2W don't big deal. or pick twin or four-core cheapest Tilera chips for bargain prices in bulk :)
freescale things had quite fast, concurent interconect for multi-core chips so that would be quite fast in case if picked chips support DPAA too.
p.s.
personally prefer slower, but working correctly Tik implementation, than behaving erratic as hell, working over Cavium or Ubicom chips.

p.p.s.
rb850gx2 never ought to replace RB1100AHx2. its more aimed to compete with ERL3 or ERPoE from competing company. if you study particular FreeScale chip datasheet - you're already know the answers.
instead of figuring random math on similar, but irrelevant chips. (colder/faster RB1100AHx2 chips had different models, rather than used in RB850gx, performing notably faster).
AH1100 successor is more like CCR1016. CCR1009 or even weaker, didn't anounced/considered, yet, models.
RB850gx2 goal is to be reliable, affordable, manageable, compact, cute little router, just like RB450's served in the past days. for better/simpler adoption - they even make it absolytely RB450's -compatible, not by accident. i hope, former rb450 owners(which include mine)enjoy/appreciate that.

Strange. I've checked my post, and there was no negative attitude, no hurrying of release, saying bad about the developers to "depress them", or asking a device specially for me. And of course, no personal attacks like in your post.

So, I ask kindly (as you've requested), and please stop this behaviour of yours. Thank you in advance.

I'm pretty sure, there are numerous of RBx50* devices on the market currently and from the past. If there is NO REAL advantage compared to those - like the mentioned big step in the throughput speed - it will be "just an another" product. Which is usually not a very good way of manoeuvring on this overpopulated market.
History, even from the near past has seen big, market leading companies fail because of bad marketing, wrong decisions or such.

That's why I said my opinion (and as I see, more people share the same opinion as well), if there won't be any particular advantage beside of the new fancy architecture, it's not worth pushing bags of money into the project, if in the end, it will be "just an another" 5 port router in the market.

Hopefully now my worries are much clear to you.

80% of market consist "just another 5 port routers". with or without any differences between, significant or not.
850gx2 ought to counter ERL3 and ERPoE, replacing aged-out RB450g at that(edge router)role. personally find its CPU not fast enough and consider CPU horsepower - major drawbacks of ALL MikroTik devices in past five years, but generally for that price its wasn't bad. so as long as MikroTik had no plans to extend from 32-bit PPC/e500 to 64-bit PPC the only two options remain: more multi-core 32-bit PPC chips and simpler/colder Tilera chips. for long-term win - focusing on later option was more important/beneficiary, probably. especially taking MDE/ZOL and Erlang as core of platform development. so twin-core Tile chip with clocks about 800Mhz atleast would b promising start.
my point is: try critize/question/ask more constructive ie ask particular things, to consider(as options nor input for)by MikroTik team, rather than help others in forum feel himself bit more nervous or irritated/sad. post your suggested/demanded device design/specs you find/view better to fill rb850gx2 niche/purpose, by your opinion.

I'm sorry, but you know, this story about new 850Gx2 is from February's MUM Italy, when Mikrotik told us that will be released on April.
Since that nothing, maybe they realize that this router can't be competitive with that CPU and will upgrade something on it.

there nothing "competive" in RB850gx2. its just RB450g incremental update/re-birth.
its lack horsepower to compete with ERL3/ERPoE or multicore SOHO routers with high-freq chips.
but its great update, in my opinion. robust, simple and easy/clear to use.

We do have plans for more powerful SOHO routers, but not based on this CPU, something else.
Please make it with miniPCIe card slot - that users can change card as needed (802.11N or 802.11ac)
And if it is able to realize please make it with an miniPCIe slot that can handle a mSATA, WiFi card
or a modem, that everyone with his needs will be served! Some peoples need a larger logfile storage,
a WiFi option or a remote access.

##Edit##
I'm also interested in this. RB750/951 or RB2011 form factor but dual core and hardware crypto.
From my point of view this can be implemented in more then two RouterBoards!
Especially the in hardware done crypto function will be welcome and many more
different VPN types then now.

@mitzone
Hello,
Is ROS running fine on the Alix board? I want to buy that board for my super-router project. Currently I need to NAT at 1gbps and my current hardware is not able to handle it.
Thanks.
If you want to try out something ok, if you are interested in testing or playing around with
this device ok, but if you need really something that must be running smooth an stable I really
would consider to take a proved x86 appliance for RouterOS likes;
- PowerRouter v3
- OGMACONNECT 2511U

Because you say it?

??? What you want to tell them now really? If a device from MikroTik is not passing your
personal willing and wishes it must be discard? Hm, interesting point of view.
Now we devide that through 500 and thus this new device will have about 1,7x less performance then the RB1100AHx2.
But only 5 GB LAN Ports and not 10 of them!!!
+++++1 for this or maybe RB800 replacement with more powerful CPU.
Hm, I was not really setting it up in the meaning of this but more in this direction.
At First their where the RB450 and RB435 and then followed by the RB450G and RB435G
and now it would be fine to see the RB850Gx2 as a replacement for the RB450G and also a
follower for the RB435G as I can imagine it! And so @honzam was right with his tip for another
RB850Gx2 with a miniPCIe slot in my eyes. Perhaps something like RB835Gx2 with an miniPCIe
and SIM slot would be fine, but on top of this I was wishing me that this miniPCIe slot should
be able to used for mSATA, WiFi and for a modem, not more or less.

But for sure something to replace at one day the RB800 with something like a RouterBoard
that offers the same options would be really interesting in my eyes too!

I am extremely curious about how this unit performs in terms of VPN(IPSEC). I guess it will handle most home connections in terms of NAT. However most routers are not able to saturate connectons over IPsec, but I hope this little bad boy does :)

I would love if somebody can pressent some VPN performance numbers for this device once they get hold of it?

I'm considering placing this at multiple locations(remote offices), and establishing IPsec site-to-site to the HQ CCR's. Do this offer AES hw encryption?

Is it possible for you do a IPsec pass through test(1518byte, AES-256) and report back som numbers?

Keep up the good work :)
Best Regards

KVM is inherently an x86-only technology - so I'd say definitely no.
You can already use KVM on RouterOS x86.

We have currently tested IPsec on the RB850Gx2, and the result is 550MBps with 1470 byte packets
This looks very promising ... what about added latency? rb1200 model had issues with added latency when using ipsec (3des or aes). This is the only hardware IPSEC accelerated fanless product in your current lineup so I am very interested to use it on remote branch offices that require ipsec but do not want the noise of fans your 1100ahx2 and ccr series make.

It started on x86, but it has progressed far beyond that. The code is actively maintained on multiple architectures, see: http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Status

However, it's only considered stable on x86 for now. That's why I asked if there's any chance. My question still stands.

All other is almost ideal at this model, but not the Ethernet L2 MTU. It's embarrasing:
L2 MTU: 1506
Max L2 MTU: 1506

For home use, 100/10 service, future proof of double that, potential Vpn use, is the device as an edgerouter?

I get the lack of jumbo frames as an issue for an internal network, but would it impact a home user?

RB850Gx2 Switch-chip Atheros8327 (ether1-ether5), equal to the RB1100AHx2, CCR1009 series, etc...

Probably a limitation of the software, if the mikrotik not increase l2mtu your destination will be garbage.

I bought the RB850 to be used with MPLS/VPLS, and is needed more than 1506, at least 1510 L2MTU with my setup, I was wrong to not check this detail, thus the garbage will be your destination.

I believe it is not a limitation of the cpu, the RB850 uses the same architecture of the RB800, Power Architecture e500v2 cores.

Yeah, this is very likely a software bug because the switch chip can do it and the CPU architecture also has no problems with it.

Keep sending them support outs to get it fixed! :)

L2TP/IPsec performance in ROS 6.21.1 is currently garbage for the RB850Gx2. I cannot get greater than about 5Mbps using sha1/aes-256cbc. The CPU doesn't even seem to be maxed out. My RB951G-2HnD will outperform that and go up to ~30Mbps at 100% CPU.

Any plans to improve?

Re: RB850Gx2 - Release date?

... ok, let's play Networking 101 ;)

An ethernet frame is 1518 bytes in size, 1500 bytes payload, 14 bytes for the header, 4 bytes for FCS/CRC.
L2MTU is NOT Ethernet frame size, but Ethernet PAYLOAD size.
Thus, testing with L2MTU 1500 equals 1518 byte frame size - all tests that Mikrotik publishes relate to frame size, not payload size.

yes, that 533MHz (if being very precise) is only CPU frequency setting. Only RAM speed can be changed.

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Ma ... uterBoards

@hedele

It is always better to be very precise with these matters. L2MTU is USUALLY = payload (1480 bytes) + IP header (20 bytes). This equals 1500 bytes. Here you add 14 bytes MAC header and + 4 bytes FCS.
This amounts to 1518 bytes as you say. This is an Ethernet Type II frame.

The frame WILL get even larger than 1518 bytes if you add VLAN-tags, MPLS-tags, ...

Mikrotik L2MTU is the stuff in RED

For full bonus points, the bytes on the wire will always be more than 1518 because at L1 more stuff is added:-)

@jeroen
If you're spinning it that way, you might as well consider TCP "overhead" and reduce the actual payload to 1460 Bytes. Or consider the overhead of any higher layer protocol and reduce the payload even further. That way of thinking is misleading when you're talking about throughput figures which are calculated at Layer 2, not the application layer :)

Anyhow, we're talking about Layer 2 throughput here (since that's what Ethernet is), and the payload size of Ethernet is 1500 Bytes for a standard Ethernet frame - period. Ethernet does not care about what it's transporting, it could as well be 500 bytes overhead and 1000 bytes net payload. It only knows "I am transporting 1500 bytes of whatever somebody loaded on my back". It's very much the same with a truck on the road - If it can carry 12 tons, and you only get to transport 10 tons of merchandise while the other 2 tons are the necessary packaging - it's still carrying 12 tons in total.

To get back on the L2MTU issue - interestingly ROS 6.22rc7 make matters even worse - after upgrading, L2MTU and max L2MTU are now 1502(!) ... just leaves me speechless... not even a SINGLE vlan works now as MTU/L2MTU is forced down to 1498.

Mikrotik response:

Hello,

It is only in this release candidate version.
The final v6.22 release will have 1580 byte L2MTU like the v6.21.1.

@hedele I was not trying to discredit you in any way. Payload is indeed 1500 bytes, but 20 bytes of that comprises the IP header. The more L2 stuff you use (like VLANs) the LESS payload will be transported unless the L2MTU can be augmented. Thus, for 1500 bytes payload + a VLAN tag, the L2MTU has to be 1504 bytes or more. For Q-in-Q you'd need 1508.

If you cannot bump the L2MTU, you would have to substract the VLAN bytes from the payload giving you 1496 bytes. And that part would suck, we agree on that hehe.

Is RB850Gx2 considered production ready with RouterOS v6.22 ? MTU and VLAN issues resolved? What about IPSEC issues, how does rb850gx2 perform? Anyone knows if we can expect jumbo frames to be introduced to this unit in next versions of software?

Under ROS 6.21.1 the L2 Max MTU has risen from 1506 to 1580. They are moving in the right direction. Only time will tell when it is solid. The RB850Gx2 originally shipped with 6.18 so it is pretty fresh. Give it some time and it will become a rock solid work horse like the RB450G but with much faster throughput. I remember that it took a long time for the RB1100 to become the solid and reliable router that it is today.

First revision of RB850Gx2 will not have a IPsec encryption accelerator, as initially posted in this thread. Sorry about that, I had wrong informatin at that time. Brochures and manuals don't mention it, so I am just writing here as this was the place where we posted the incorrect info.

Do you mean that this revision cannot be fixes by software to use IPSec Hardware encryption?

If yes you have to think about money return, because this look like aaaaa veerry huge fraud. We are discussing this routerboard 8 months, and suddenly you are telling us that this is not real? Really ?

It was never advertised and not in any manual or specification sheet. Only one mistaken post in a user forum.

Software can't "fix" this because the CPU needs to be different.

I was relying on this info about ipsec acceleration and just ordered two units I need for ipsec ... Hopefully my distributor will return the money! When can we expect hardware accelerated versions of rb850gx2? CCR is not an option for me because of fan noise!

"What a mistake-a to make-a!"

However there are some mitigating circumstanses. It it is new and the manual is not always up to date. Next to this I have found the information from Normis in the past to be reliable.

I am not Mikrotik's Advocatus Diaboli but IMHO if I am not 100% sure about specs the red light should start flashing in my head to double check infortmation, especially if "this one post" have no confirmation elsewhere.

Normis ... can you please answer these questions:

1. Is there going to be a revision of RB850Gx2 with IPsec encryption accelerator ?
2. When can we expect such a revision?
3. Will future revisions of RB850Gx2 still be fanless?
4. any other changes planned for future revisions that are not going to be included in first revisions (jumbo frames for example) ?
5. What IPsec throughput can we expect from the first revisions of RB850Gx2 without accelerator?

tnx in advance ...

1. yes
2. hard to say, possibly within 6 months, but that is a wild guess
3. yes
4. hard to say, nothing specific at the moment
5. similar to any un-accelerated CPU at this frequency.

Agreed. The IPSEC performance is awful. Both with PPPoE and L2TP I also only get about 20mbps. Am going to try to return these things. My RB951G-2HnD outperforms them.

I am seriously disappointed, I bought this because HW accel (or at least good IPSEC performance) was advertised in this forum:
We have currently tested IPsec on the RB850Gx2, and the result is 550MBps with 1470 byte packets

Easyli buy from Exar some smaller crypto Chips and then solder them on each non-Tilera based RouterBoard and we get even on all RouterBoards hardware crypto acceleration for VPN!

Once integrated it can be even used. Or a plain miniPCI for older Boards and a miniPCIe vpn card
for newer RouterBoards so each of us can be buy one if he is needing.

I checked ipsec throughput RB850Gx2 with ROS 6.28
With routing and some firewall rules:
receiving 120-125Mbps
transmission 112Mbps

Without routing and filtering I believe that will be close to 150Mbps :)

It would be grate to have real life test... Site to site ipsec with a GRE tunnel in it and routing between networks...

Rb1100ahx2 is able to take up to 500 mbps.

It is only encryption performance. RB1100ahx2 roughly twice as powerful. I doubt that you will get so much on RB850Gx2 due to other restrictions.
However in VPN range 100-300mb/s this router must be good.

IMHO the new RB850Gx2 with hardware encryption should have been called RB851Gx2

Now If we want to buy the improved version of RB850Gx2 we need to ask our provider to know it's serial number

"1" in the end will indicate that it has a wireless slot or card. + each change in product code results in new government certification for us, to import that product, so i'm against changing any names, especially in cases when there are no physical differences between boards.

That's a good reason, but mind on customers. Now we have a problem due to this unchanged name of product. I see others manufacturers add a v2 or hardware spec 2 when they do a change like this.

The vortex suggestion of the K element in the name for future products it's a good idea.

This is just one small feature, and for 95-99% of customers it will be totally no difference. But those 1-5% that need it usually will know exatly what to look for in serial number.

What's a big or small feature is subjective to everyone's needs.

By that logic all routerboards should have the same model number and change the serials if you want a 2nd mini-pci or a second ethernet port or integrated wifi.

It's just bad business. Why, as a customer, should I have to contact my distributor asking for serial numbers and all that nonsense?

Also, if that was done to avoid new certifications I am not sure if that's "legal". So you get a certification for device A, you then change the most important chip on it (the CPU!!) and then sell it with the same name/model?
How would the certification bodies know that the device operates how it should since a new cpu is on it?

Thanks for the test results.

I think the results would be more realistic if 2 RB850Gx2 where used for IPSec instead of RB850Gx2 <> RB3011.
This way you get clear RB850Gx2 performance without any (potential) bottlenecks on the newly released RouterOS for ARM arch.
Also inclusion of 'Tools > Profile' and the CPU window from 'System > Resources' in your screenshots would give the reader more insight on what's going on performance wise during the tests.

I am thinking of replacing my long lived x86 router with a RB850Gx2 but I can't find any decent tests published to make up my mind if it will be able to handle the IPsec tunnels and overall traffic I need it for.

Do you known if rb850 supports mSD-XC cards? What is maximum supported mSD-HC / mSD-XC card size?
