10GBASE-T SFP+?

Thu May 08, 2014 6:43 pm

Anyone know if there are plans for a 10GBASE-T module? I'm working with existing Cat6 copper infrastructure and can't run any new drops. Was hoping to use an existing copper line as a 10GB trunk. Thanks.

I don't think there are any available yet.
It probably has to do with power consumption. I believe that an SFP+ port can deliver about 2 watts, but a 10G UTP transceiver currently requires about 5 watts.
I hope they will soon produce more energy efficient 10G transceivers.

I know Aruba makes one. I recently installed a new 7200 series wireless controller for a customer that came with 4 of them, but I can't seem to get a part number from anyone. I'm also pretty sure Cisco makes them for their Nexus series core switches, but again, can't find a part number.

10GBase-T is really a power hungry technology to be in SFP+ form factor.

Common SFP+ ports may support as high as 1.5W while 10GBase-T consumes as more as 4~5W.

If you are not interested in standalone media converter, you may accept some solution like

It provides you a compact solution to direct link between SFP+ port and 10 RJ45 port.

Before an energy efficient 10GBASE-T SFP+ being available, the possible solution for linking SFP+ and 10GBASE-T will be like
