my experience with CRS125, CRS109 and RB2011 on 200Mbit/s ISP line speed downstream

Wed Mar 11, 2015 1:23 pm

I'm confused, does somebodies similar experiences?

Installation: home network (standard NAT and few FW rules, road warrior vpn usually not active)
Test on speedtest.net (ISP UPC Cablecom Switzerland)

CRS125-24G-1S-RM v6.27 (the same 6.25, 6.26)
Downstream: 30-120Mbps (200Mbit/s ISP line speed downstream)
Upstream: 20Mbps (20Mbit/s ISP line speed upstream)
cpu-load on Speedtest max 80%

RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN v6.25 (on other Place)
Downstream: 200Mbps (200Mbit/s ISP line speed downstream)
Upstream: 20Mbps (20Mbit/s ISP line speed upstream)
cpu-load on Speedtest max 80%

i thnk, OK CRS125 is a Switch? But then i test CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN

CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN v6.15 (out of the Box)
Downstream: 200Mbps (200Mbit/s ISP line speed downstream)
Upstream: 20Mbps (20Mbit/s ISP line speed upstream)
cpu-load on Speedtest max 80%

CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN v6.15 (Export/Import Config from CRS125-24G)
Downstream: 200Mbps (200Mbit/s ISP line speed downstream)
Upstream: 20Mbps (20Mbit/s ISP line speed upstream)
cpu-load on Speedtest max 80%

CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN v6.27 (Export/Import Config from CRS125-24G)
Downstream: 120Mbps (200Mbit/s ISP line speed downstream)
Upstream: 20Mbps (20Mbit/s ISP line speed upstream)
cpu-load on Speedtest max 80%

WTF!? then it test...

CRS125-24G-1S-RM v6.15
Downstream: 200Mbps (200Mbit/s ISP line speed downstream)
Upstream: 20Mbps (20Mbit/s ISP line speed upstream)
cpu-load on Speedtest max 80%

I'm sure somewhere after v6.15 is a mistake somewhere!

Does anyone have similar experience or have any idea what is the problem?

Upload test results 20Mbps on every device looks very suspicious to me.
I would say that your IPS put limitation for your upload traffic.

First, you should make tests on torrents not speedtest.net )
Second, try to change Queue types to ethernet-defualt and post results.

Actually, best is to take the whole Internet provider out of the equation and setup your own tests using iperf (for example). This way you are testing the capabilities of the Routerboard and nothing else. You need to have a constant and re-producable test.

Second, es, Queue type can be very important, especially on the CRS125! Please also take a look at the following post: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... 16#p472816

Hammer clearly states that he has a 20mb/s upstream from ISP. What he cares about, is clearly the downstream.

Regarding downstream speed for master-port (or event better for all ports) changing interface queue from only-hardware-queue to ethernet-default.
It should improve download speed (200Mbps should be reached without issue).

upstream from ISP is 20mb/s, thats OK.

Thanks for the tips. OK I will try changing interface queue from only-hardware-queue to ethernet-default on newest Firmware.

Can I add to this thread, regarding CRS112-8G-4S which I recently purchased?
It was Ros 6.29 and I found it has troubles with downstream at my home, that was only about 20 to 40 Mbit by ISP..
but after "upgrade" from RB951g to CRS112 it dropped to just only 8Mbit.. CPU load 80+% while testing..

Changed Queues to Ethernet-default but seemed to make no difference. Upgraded to 6.32 no change.
So after reading this thread I managed to netinstall Ros 6.15 to it, downloaded from some archives..
( but beware - it said it has no license then, and will stop after 24 hours!!!
I happily had its license key saved and it seem to accepted it).

Anyway, CPU load went down, both iddle and while testing, and it seem to work well with 6.15.

It has even weaker CPU than CRS109. Oh, that was a surprise, it seem weaker than $15 hAP lite.. Why that is?
I did not notice that (expected that it will be same as CRS109),
but even if I would see 400MHz, I would expect it is just a different kind of CPU and will suffice..
I found soon that it can not even support Bond interfaces by CPU (iperf of 2x gigabit bond resulted in 360Mbit..).
What a shame.. Well it support Trunk by switch chip, but it is not the same I guess (LACP..).

May I ask for some guess whether it should be able to support 40Mbit download, with very basic NAT and firewall?
I can not be sure for now whot is limitting my bandwidth, it may be ISP.

EDIT:
I should update, that after recovering my ISP access, I have around the same bandwidth as before
(when i was usng RB851g, the same cpu as RB2011), which is up to 40Mbit download.
No problems so far, at all, using Routeros 6.15 on CRS112-8G-4S.
I noticed that IRQ in resources is dramatically lower than it was with 6.29 and 6.32 Routeros.
Tried also NAT and it seems to hold on at above gigabit (1.3Gigabit using trunk-trunk pcs just different ip subnets).
So the 400MHz mips 24kc v8.5 CPU is not that weak as I was afraid of ( when I initially saw 360Mbit instead of 2Gbit and 100% load - had Bonding set in Interfaces, not Trunk set in Switch.
This way it is a great device, note that I want to have optically isolated in/out paths and rb260 is great (including price).
btw, cable TV passes through VLAN like a charm so metallic wires end in rb260 right at the door.

I stay tuned because I think that low performance/high load is just a bug and will be sorted off some time.

There was some thread here the other day about someone's CRS125 performing worse routing than an RB2011, which is not expected.

Same here !

After an Internet Upgrade at home, I was disapointed of my download speed on this 200$can Switch/Router.

It was with ROS 6.30 ...

I have try the last one ( 6.33.3 ) , same problem ...
I have try changing the queue type from hardware to ethernet-default, maybe it help, but can't reach my actual ISP download speed.

Then I read the Hammer post about ROS 6.15

I give it a try, and WOW ... I can now have my full ISP Download speed with my CRS125 .

Anybody have report the issue to Mikrotik Staff ?

+1 on torrent test, because it generates more connections and high PPS load,

i think speedtest can complements well to see the single connection low PPS performance to get a more complete picture

Not everyone uses torrents, I guess. As for me, really standard web browsing and mail is what matter..
Just try local-local test, e.g. iperf, it can run multiple parallel connections using -P .
This will avoid possible internet bottlenecks, and show numbers imho really disgusting.

At affected customers I have still got the old firmware. Interesting to hear that there still is not an isolated case.
The same result when switching to queue type from hardware to ethernet-default, bether but not full speed! That must be a bug!? All Test on speedtest.net

Time is passing by, and my CRS is still v6.15 - nobody knowns whether the bug (i am sure it is) was sorted out?
This case is terribly disappointing for me and making me troubles in work (i started to be affraid of selling mikrotik routers to customers..)
