RouterBoard hAP AC Slow wireless performance.

Thu Sep 08, 2016 4:44 pm

My Internet provider recently upgraded my package and I realized my Wifi for most devices are Stopping around 30MB Downloads.

I have a new Google Nexus Phone and I see consistent 150MB Downloads, But on my Older Ipad2 (802.11N) and my New Laptop(Windows 10-Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265) I stop at almost exactly 30MB download.

If I connect to the HAP AC gigabit port I also get 150MB downloads.

I can be 2 feet or 200 feet from AP same with the laptop.

I tried the 2.4ghz and 5ghz range and tried Auto and setting a specific channel/Frequency, Non seems to help, changing from auto actually made it slower.

The issue must be a setting that is making the 802.11N slower, or the AC with non android slower?

Any help would be appreciated.

As far as the iPad2 being slow, it is a single stream 802.11 N with max wireless rate of 65mbps. You will only realize 1/2 to 1/3 of the wireless rate, so it is at its limit.

With the phone capable of reaching 150mbps wirelessly, I suspect the laptop has a driver issue or a settings error. What data rates do you see for the laptop?

I've done some speed tests with my new HAP AC against a 2 year old MacBook Pro. The 5GHz interface is set to Germany, channel 116, WMM on, Antenna Gain 2db. DIstance approx. 2 meters. Running v6.37rc32 with no problems.
iperf3 server runs on a QNAP Intel NAS, when using a LAN cable I get around 980 MBit/s.

HAP AC:
$ ./iperf3 -c 192.168.x.11 -R

Is there anything to get the HAP AC wireless to speed up a little? CPU is not nearly maxed out during my tests. I also bought a WAP AC (loving both my new toys :) which gives me nearly the same results as the HAP. Having used the WAP / HAP for the last weeks with mainly Apple devices, absolutely stable btw. Great job, Mikrotik!
I know it's never fair to compare against a consumer device, but the AVM 1750e also uses Atheros hardware, does not have an external antenna, so the hardware might be similar.

Model RouterBOARD 962UiGS-5HacT2HnT
Board Name hAP ac
Version 6.36.3 (stable)
Build Time Sep/05/2016 08:09:03

To 2frogs I was playing with settings on the client side. There was a setting for my wifi driver and i started using iperf to test to a hard gigabit wired server. The setting has changed from HT Mode-VHT to HT Mode=HT Mode. I also tried to disable and that made it worse. With it set to HT Mode=HT Mode I am now getting about 100MB up/down per iperf.

Sounds like that may be as good as it gets?

ok, so I upgraded the firmware and this seems to have made a big difference. I was then able to set my HT mode back to VHT and connect. It seems that although I thought I was connected with AC-5GHZ I was really at N. I changed a few other things on client and AP side but no major changes were noticed.

IIf anyone knows any other settings to improve AC performance thanks in advance.

The default config for the wireless should be pretty good. The only thing I changed on my hAP AC is locking the channel on 100 and enabling WMM. I get a consistent 1300mbps link, and smooth 350~375mbps throughput.

Thanks! Locking down to a good channel was key. So, basically what was happening, the cable modem I was sent from comcast has wifi built in. I had wifi radio "disabled" aka the router was in "bridge" mode. What I didn't know is if you don't log onto the comcast site and disable the "xfinity hotspot" option BEFORE then it's still broadcasting and Wifi isn't really disabled. Since I had two AC/5GHZ routers within a few feet of each other the Mikrotik grabbed the best channel available which was terrible. So I got my own cable modem with no wifi, grabbed a wifi analyzer and figured the best available channel, and Boom. 4 times faster connection and it exceeds my upstream cable modem MAX so I'm golden.

Thanks everyone for responding.

To summarize, the two things that helped me the most was upgrading the firmware, and removing interference/picking the best channel available.

Perfect! I used a WiSpy to scan and visualize my 5GHz range. after about 2 hours, channel 100 (5500Mhz ~ 5580MHz) was dead silent. The perfect choice for mine. Locking it down also helps the AP start up faster, since it doesn't have to scan for a channel. The only thing it needs to do is check for Radar.

Can you show me your exact configuration?
I reach max 80~110mbps throughput over wireless (CAPsMAN)

I tried all the settings. Also following the list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
Always when I set 80MHz, stands unsupportet configuraton (Country: switzerland with CAPsMAN). So I ask for the configuration to see what I do wrong? ;-)

In CAPsMAN it is different. Channel width should be 20MHz and you should use Extension Channel setting to choose wide the total channel should be.

I have already tried various (with CAPsMAN and without CAPsMAN), but I never get a link higher than the screenshot.

Can someone post a working configuration, with consistent 1300mbps link? The configuration can also be without CAPSMAN, If possible with country Switzerland.

To get 1300mbps data-rate (not throughput) you need a client device capable of 3 spatial streams

Most smartphones are single spatial stream because that limited to 433mbps datarate

Some notable and specific smartphone exceptions are dual spatial stream because that limited to 866mbps datarate

real world enterprise implementations use 40mhz channel, for that capsmanager centralized forwarding performance of 200mbps is more than enough

Set it to
5GHz-A/N/AC
20/40/80MHz Ceee

It should work automatically best effort for anything you connect

I'm not too much into mac but as far I know Mac Air doesn't have triple chain wifi, I had new Mac Air yesterday at work and it showed as dual chain in device manager, also connected 867mbit

That is interesting. Friend of mine has same model same time and got 1200-1300 connection from Netgear 5G Router.
I just wondering where can I find this information in mac about WiFi card dual/triple ?

Other issue is channel, @IntrusDave got this connection but using channel 100 on Mikrotik.
I'm getting connection by this confix only on 48 channel ;-(

How to run connection 100ch on wAP ac ?

Check model specifications for wifi, not sure how to check under OSX, I installed windows as customer requested so it was easy to check under device manager..

This area looks clear. Just one house and to next house 500 m.
Looking to wifi monitor I see that this is not causing this problem.

Hi, I bought hAP AC and I have a question about 5GHz AC speed.
I have a good internet connection, 600-800Mbit+ DOWN/UP on wire, but I have problem with AC wireless speed.
After 2 days of testing I have such results:

Signal -55dBm, 3m from client - USB TP Link T4UH AC1200.
CCQ 92%
TX Rate 520Mbps-80Mhz/2S/SGI
RX Rate 866 Mbps-80Mhz/2S/SGI

As you can see below my ISP give me better upload than download.
But can someone tell me why download on WiFI is not as fast as upload?

If you compare your Tx and Rx rates in the registration table they are approx 60% different which matches your real world result. Antenna polarisation may be influencing this - perhaps use an extension USB and adjust position of the adapter to get a better registration.

Also data rate of wireless is approx half air rate which is also consistant with your result.

You will note your registration indicates only 2S - 2 Spatial streams. Make sure all chains are enabled under the HT tab of you Mikrotik Wireless Interface as the hAP AC supports 3S - 3 Spatial streams.

Does your uSB device support 3S ? And are both the USB device and PC USB3.0 ?

Try disabling WPA-PSK, leaving only WPA2-PSK in your security profile.

Perhaps limit Tx Power to 20dBm - sometimes this also can help.

Hope this helps.

Scampbell, thank you very much for your answer and information.

My client device is USB 3.0 (on PC too) but only 2S - 867Mbps TX Rate is maximal speed.
I would be very happy if TX Rate were the same but after all attempts (disable WPA-PSK, lower Tx power, adapter position) is still 468-520Mbps.

I can try another client, I have notebook with Intel Dualband card at wok.
