Multiple SSID´s

Thu Oct 12, 2006 9:03 pm

Hi,

Because this it´s my first post I have to congratulate everybody here for the quality and knowledge this community has with Wireless and IP communications.

My questions are around multiple SSID´s

We plan to use 6 (RB/5HS) MikroTik Hotspot Access Points for one in door Hot Spot coverage.

The project it´s to allow the customers in a big building to have their own SSID like they were running their own WiFi network. This will allow them to share their files, printers and peripherals easily.

We also want to have the possibility to have different Access Security controls (like WPA2, WPA or WPA-PSK/AES) and VPN´s (IP Sec, PPTP, or L2TP) by SSID.

In this case we need to support 40 customers networks (probably 40 SSID´s).

We are also planning to use a PC with the RouterOS SW installed to run the HotSpot application as a gateway to the ADSL Broadband router.

1. Do you think this configuration will work to isolate the customer’s virtual networks and to share the internet access too?

2. Which is the maximum SSID´s the RouterOS support?

3. Can we use a (RB/5EX) Multiport RouterBOARD kit to connect the AP¨s to the broadband router instead of a PC and also have the HotSpot application running on it?

4. Is there another way to do this feature (like Virtual WiFi´s networks) without multiple SSID´s?

Thanks a lot.

Virtual AP feature is implemented in RouterOS, but it is not recommend to add too many Virtual access points on one system (each new Virtual AP will act as there is new physical AP).
RouterOS soupports security protocols, more information about RouterOS wireless features,

1. Do you think this configuration will work to isolate the customer’s virtual networks and to share the internet access too?
Yes, but you need to be careful not to connect the virtual wireless networks in undesired ways when they all come together at the hotspot / uplink router. Maybe you can deploy tagged VLANs on the (wired) ethernet interfaces there to keep things separated. You could even run multiple hotspots on the gateway, bound to the different VLANs, to give every tennant the illusion of having his own hotspot gateway (with customized login page, separate user managemente etc.). Also, if you implement incoming VPN connection for people connecting from the outside internet to different customer intranets, then you'll need to be careful to get the firewall filter rules right so that a connected VPN user can only access his company intranet and not the others.
2. Which is the maximum SSID´s the RouterOS support?
Per the manual, the implementation limit appears to be 128 virtual AP, but consider what sergejs noted regarding large numbers of VAP's.
3. Can we use a (RB/5EX) Multiport RouterBOARD kit to connect the AP¨s to the broadband router instead of a PC and also have the HotSpot application running on it?
Sure, although a fast PC will give better performance, but depending on the speed of your internet uplink and the estimated number of users the RB 532 should do OK.

Thanks everybody, it seems we will do our project with the Mikrotik solution.

Good to have you there!
