Weatherproof Enclosure Recomendations

Wed Nov 15, 2006 11:04 am

I would like to put my PC based RouterOS outdoor near my antenna so I will minimize my cable loss, and I would like to get some good recommendations from professionals on what weatherproof outdoor enclosure I can use.

We get pretty hot summers where I live and under the sun it can max to 45-50 degrees Celsius. Winters are ok not very cold. Rain is medium as well.

The pc that I have available at the moment is a P4 2.4 GHz.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you need a box for a whole pc it has to be larger. We are using Rittal
plastic boxes, available in many sizes:

This is a picture of an Intel server mainboard + powersupply + cache hdd
(glued on top of powersupply) + CF boot card. Everything in a Rittal
KS1434600 case (IP66/NEMA 4x rated):

Well the primary objective here is to get a box that can stand all that sun heat. I am not really into that big. I just need it to fit a normal ATX or mATX mb with a CPU, possible video card in case is not onboard and a couple of SR5s. Also a couple of case fans for good air flow.

I will be using IDE Flash for the RouterOS and a 200W PicoPSU with no dvd or floppy or IDE/SATA HDD so that will save me lots of space.

But that looks just fine in size. Thanks for the post. Whats the price of that thing just to see if its on budget?

The board + Power + HDD was from a used 1U 19" server = 110.- Euro netto
CF + Adapter = 20.- Euro
Case = 80.- Euro
Work = 2 hours.

+ MT license + MiniPCI cards + PCI/MiniPCI adapter

the case is fairly cheap if compared to other watherproof enclosures.

Another question. Was there place for the case fans or did you drill holes and place the case fans there?

Also what the higher temp you get in the summer where u live?

thanks again seandsl

There were no holes. We drilled these by our own. We live in germany,
so there are around 30-40°C max in the shadow. No probs so far. I think
in a 19" rack the board will get hotter.

For the fan outlet there are some filters available from Rittal. These
filters reduce the water protection to IP54. (closed box has IP66).

Here you have an english datasheet. Our cases are on page 32.

How much power does your PC use? Do you have it on a battery backup?

Don't know, not relevant for us. Directly Connected to 230V.

Indoor PC Units normally have UPS between.
