2.4Backbone and 2.4 Local

Mon Jan 15, 2007 10:56 am

Has anyone used 2.4 as a back bone to another AP (directional antenna) on say on one channel and then a second radio in the RB532 on 2.4 as a local hotpot (omni antenna) on another channel before.

Does it work ok?

Interested to here any comments.

Cheers

Piri

We do this often. Vertical polarised directional with a Horizontal polarised onmi/sector. Keep the antennas as far apart as possible and use Ch 1 and 11 etc.

That's a 16.5dBi 12 Slot WaveGuide 95° Sector. You can get 13dBi (double sided) that covers 360° (omni) and smaller ones that are 12dBi and 9dBi respectively. That photo is pretty much the same config as I described.

If I tilted the Omni 90o what would the signal be like to customers. The signal pattern would be like a plate mounted vertically would it not. And I don have any customers in the sky ? or am Incorrect here ?

I was wondering if he was, but with all the weird antennas kicking around these days who knows.

I did some research and did not realize that you could purchase Omni Directional antennas either Vertically or Horizontally polarized.

Pacwireless makes a few. But I haven't used any myself. I only use 2.4Ghz Vert. antennas for small hotspot repeaters, never on towers. I usualy start with 90* and work down from there.

re: 2.4 backhauls

We have some 2.4 backhauls in a limited MESH setup, configured exactly as you are describing, and they have been very unstable, more so in the heat of a Texas summer. We are fixing to move to 5.8 backhauls for this very reason.

In the Syngress book, "Wireless Hacking," SoCalFreeNet initially deployed this setup and said it worked great, for a while, but as the noise floor increased, the backhaul links became less reliable. Eventually, they pulled their 2.4 backhauls and went to 5.8. (Wireless Hacking, page 25.).

In your area or application, you may not have any trouble at all. But you did ask, so I thought I would throw my two cents in.

Yes, their horizontal sector/omni's are same as what we use (but resold as 'Hills Antennas' over here) as linked above. They perform well and we keep them right next to the ocean without issue.
