Client 2.4G and 5G passive band steering

Fri Jun 01, 2018 6:19 pm

Hi,

What is your experience with passive band steering, and has anybody tried an automated approach
with dynamic thershold and single band client detection (assumign you have 2.4G and 5G Wifi with same SSID)?

Idea of passive band steering (roughly) is:
- high AP-client distance/poor connection/low RSSI --> rather connect 2.4Ghz
- low AP-client distance/good connection/high RSSI --> connect to 5Ghz

Naturally this can only be done for dual band clients and needs to be set up for each client.
You can automate (to a certain level, will not always work) the detection if a client is dual band or not:
- 2.4G device connected. if good RSSI , block access on 2.4G i/f, wait for registration on 5G i/f, if not after 10 seconds allow access to 2.4G and add to "single band client group".

has anyone tried this and what is the performance/usability you observed?
(this is anyhow very rudimentary, and not comapribale with 11k/r/s etc. but could help in basic appications until Mtik supports real band steering).
