Sequentially increasing ping problem

Wed Dec 19, 2018 3:50 pm

Hy everyone!

I have a problem that I have never seen before, neither did I ever read anything like it in the forums. It is happening with one of our colleagues and one of our clients antenna as well (both SXTsq 5 ac arm), they are connected to different aps (we tried connect them to a few different aps in their area) and they live in different areas in the city (no overlap there). Both of thier connections look perfect first glance (good signal, good bandwidth test etc.), however after a certain amount of time their ping time to the AP starts to gradually increase until it reaches around 500 ms, them it drops back to be around 0-2 ms for a few pings and then start to rise again. It does this for a few repetition and then it's gone for several minutes. During the normal ping period their internet is completely fine they can use it without any issue, but it is almost unusable during this sequentially increasing ping episodes. First we thought it is some sort of interference (it is still not out of the question), because Signal to Noise was very unstable during the episodes, but changing AP frequencies and playing with bandwidth didn't fix anything, however suprisingly setting the client stations scan list by hand to only scan for the APs frequency solved the issue in both case (changing it back brings back the problem as well).

Did any of you seen anything like this? Is this some sort of wierd interference or a software/hardware issue?

Hello,

Which protocol do you use?

802.11 both cases.

could you try changing the protocol to nstreme or nv2 ?

Exactly the same problem here. fixing the client (SXTsq 5 AC) scan list frequency to AP's frequency solves the issue like OP mentioned before

I don't think WISPs want to do this, because not all clients use MikroTik CPEs

This is behaviour on the shared media, however we need to understand if it is expected behaviour or not.

You need to capture a trace using '/interface wireless sniffer', using another radio of the same generation configured on the same frequency and channel width, and interpret the trace according to the 802.11n/ac standards in wireshark, or send to Mikrotik support, so they can. This would be actually very helpful.
