Station roaming + Wik explanation

Mon Jan 21, 2019 3:40 pm

Station Roaming
Station Roaming feature is available only for 802.11 wireless protocol and only for station modes. When RouterOS wireless client is connected to the AP using 802.11 wireless protocol it will periodically perform the background scan with specific time intervals. When the background scan will find an AP with better signal it will try to roam to that AP. The time intervals between the background scans will become shorter when the wireless signal becomes worse and the background scan interval will become longer when the wireless client signal will get better.
So, which AP's?

Are these AP's that work with the same SSID?
Are these AP's that work with the same frequency?
Do the AP's of desire need to be enlisted in the 'connect to' list of station?
I'd presume the background scan only take place in the frequencies enlisted in the 'scan list'?
I'd presume that when the background scan also only takes place for AP's in the 'connect to' list the order of this list makes a difference? Or not?

In a fixed P2MP network with many fixed stations that don't need to roam, will the setting
station-roaming=enabled
have any impact on the network performance?
When 30 connected stations have a fixed connection to one AP but station roaming is still 'on' they all scan the whole band set in 'scan list'. During the scan some of the capacity of the station gets used to do that scan so is not available to the actual work needed? (passing traffic and negotiate with AP and other stations in RTS/CTS csma protocol....)

It would be nice if some more info was given so the setting and if this would be included in the Wiki.

I don't have the time to find out the actual working of this setting where something like this should just be explained in the Wiki / manual.

Not only an impact for the P2MP performance, but by setting it to disabled (it is enabled by default) it stopped the repeated disconnects triggered by that background scan.

We don't want sticky clients, but in a P2MP being sticky can be the better choice. (e.g. if there is no second AP to connect to).
