RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT low wifi performance

Sun May 26, 2019 12:02 am

Hi, I have long time Mikrotik equipment but until now I didn't understand why the wifi is soo week. I have at my home 2 access point (RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT) distance about 7 meters and the max speed that I'm getting with my MacBook Pro is 300mbps upload and 200mbps download... I had before UniFi AP Pro and with the same computer I got 900+ mbps via wifi...
There is way to improve the performance?

This is the computer from CAPsMAN's Registration Table

It would seem you are coming to the same findings I am.

I can't get a single test to break 330 using Mikrotik Wireless. wAP AC, cAP AC, hAP AC, RB4011. This is a consistent thing.

It's to the point now where I tell people flat out... "If your internet speed is above 250M we will not be able to use Mikrotik wireless." I am just sick of the complaints post install.

Better than 300M or high density / noisy environment... It's going to be Ruckus Wireless.
Adopting this as a strict policy has allowed us to provide our customers a MUCH BETTER RESULT/EXPERIENCE.

Can confirm, no matter the product, the performance just isn't up to the competition. I'm pretty sure it's down to the custom wireless drivers Mikrotik insists on using, which are just not up to the level of open source ones. If your device is supported, flashing OpenWRT onto it will get you a modern kernel with up to date drivers that might perform better. I'm hoping to do some performance testing with OpenWRT on a wAP AC soon.

I´d be interested in benchmark results, aswell.

I get speeds up to 400 ~ 450 Mbps in my house, Intel AC8265. There is a lot of tuning that can be done.

Can you please share your config (/capsman export hide-sensitive)?

You can give OpenWRT a try, they use better WiFi drivers than Mikrotik. Don't expect an increase on raw performance benchmarks but daily usage gets massively improved with it.

You can give OpenWRT a try
Just a fair warning if you try this: Flashing OpenWRT to NAND flash will wipe ROS license from the device and replace bootloader, so it will not be possible to go back.
But it's possible to test it by loading it just to RAM, as long as you don't touch the flash memory it's safe...
