Performance Microtik Wireless Dish

Fri Jun 28, 2019 12:01 am

Hello,

I recently purchased a pack of Microtik Wireless Dish.
I have configured the master / slave pack with master (192.168.88.2) and slave (192.168.88.3).
The distance to which they are installed is 71.2 meters and there is no misalignment in the antennas.
Firmware version is 6.44.3 (stable).

The problem is that when I do a bandwith test (random data) from the master to the slave I get UDP with a bandwidth of approximately 945Mbps in both Tx and RX simultaneously. But, when I chose to do the test with TCP (random data) the bandwidth drops to 254Mbps Tx / Rx

Can someone tell me if this is normal?
If there is an error, I will post the configuration files of the master and the slave.

Can someone help me?

Greetings to all

Btest is limited by device resources. Please run Btest on other, powerfull devices through created 60GHz link

Thank you very much for your reply

This performance problem with the bandwith test seems to be common in most of your hardware. Maybe you should make a warning in both Webfig and Winbox to avoid questions and / or questions to the technical support service or the forum community.

I will do the test with two PCs on both sides of the link and I will comment the results here.

Do you have a Btest version for Windows?

Thank you all,

71.2 meters is really close for these dishes. Unfortunately there’s no more tx-power control so a pair of the original Wireless Wires is a better choice.

Question for Mikrotik: can we get tx-power control back?

Hi,

Effectively, but when I bought the equipment I assumed that -at least- they would have a power regulation of emission for less power in case of short distances or oversaturation.

The Microtik documentation should be more extensive and of higher quality. It would be a good boost for your sales.

Later I will post some performance tests with iperf3

Thanks

please add multiple parallel streams with -P option, for UDP, you have to set transfer speed as well.

-P with UDP isn’t needed, and will just create n number of streams at the specified bandwidth. Try ‘-b 1G’ and don’t use ‘-fm’ as I believe it outputs as mebibits despite the “Mbps” designation.

Hello,

I just tried a transfer through the wireless link with SMB protocol between a Macbook Pro (192.168.4.121) and a NAS Synology DS918 + (192.168.6.10) out of a total of 57.63GB (23 files) and the average speed has been 40.96 MB / s

What do you think?

Your client (Mac-Mini-i7) seems to be limited in the number of packets it can generate. You should be seeing closer to 940 Mbps on the client output.
Try `./iperf3 -c 192.168.4.121 -P4` for the TCP test. TCP will ramp up and use as much bandwidth as possible during the test, so you don't have to specify bandwidth for the test.
The drop-outs are most concerning. What do the radio stats look like during the test? Run `/interface w60g monitor 0` on the radios while running the test and check the signal levels and MCS.

That should be great. Something is interrupting the flows, but it's really hard to tell what. Mikrotik might have a better answer for you, but all I can think of is the signal is too hot at that distance.
Of course, we have no way of turning down the power. If you can, try a pair of the original Wireless Wires at that distance and see if it's any better.

P.S. I'm don't see the remote report on your UDP tests, so you're only seeing the amount of traffic generated, not the amount that made it to the other side. Try to monitor the output of the iperf3 server on the other end to get an idea of packet loss. Are you able to ping the other side and measure packet loss and latency that way?

Re: Performance Microtik Wireless Dish

What about UDP?
Is that with the small Wireless Wires or the dishes?
This test is worse than ever. The fact that it never gets above 100 Mbps is concerning; are the cables on both ends OK?

This is LHG60 Wireless Dish.

The wiring gives me the impression that it is fine.

Something must be failing in the configuration because this is not normal.

UDP fails?

Re: Performance Microtik Wireless Dish

Tue Jul 02, 2019 6:30 pm

Yesterday, I did a test transferring 57.63GB from a NAS (12.168.6.10) to the MacBook Pro (192.168.4.121) and it took 24 minutes which is equivalent to 40.96MB / s.
Half of the theoretical 1Gbit / s of the link.

Now I'm doing a similar test and see what the results are (For now six times slower).

I think it's going to be a matter of burning the equipment to the fire... :-(
Greetings

Are both sides’ Ethernet ports negotiating at 1 Gbps?

Well I'm out of ideas. Try a different channel? The 23% packet error rate isn't great. Still makes me think the signal's too hot.

I post some tests between the two Wireless Dish by means of bandwith test (that will not be the best) but in UDP it reaches the maximum performance of the link and in TCP it remains in 250-300Mbit / s.

I put the screens in send, receive an both.

If you notice, in one direction the router is capable of general traffic to reach 800Mbit / s in TCP. When it falls to 250/300 it is when we try it in both directions, I suppose due to lack of processing capacity.

Hello,

I upgraded to the latest version 6.45beta62 and used as a 66,000MHz link frequency

I have done some additional tests this night and discover that by doing a bandwith test receiving TCP 100 connections I get 734Mbits of performance. But be careful, I was simultaneously making a copy from a NAS (6.10) to a MacBook (4.121) of 36.64GB and the speed of this last data transfer did not suffer too much.

I think there may be a problem with Macs that are not able to give enough data flow for tests with iperf and others. I will try next days to try two x86 PCs with i5 and i7 processors and Intel cards to see if the problem could be in the Mac. I hope so and I will avoid having to throw the Microtik Wire Dish in the trash.

In any case, I reiterate that Microtik's documentation is very scarce and poorly organized. You should dedicate an Engineer for at least one year to prepare a coherent and didactic documentation on RouterOs.

All opinions and suggestions are welcome to see if we can solve this performance problem.

Greetings to all and especially to those who have contributed in this post.

Signal may be too hot, but in this case it seems that this is caused somewhere else.
Is there any other devices in between PCs and Wireless Wire dishes?
My first guess was that traffic generation was bottle necking Mac mini single core as well, adding -P argument and multiple parallel streams should give some improvement.
edit:
based on this:
https://github.com/esnet/iperf/issues/289
it seems that -P isn't much help.
As a workaround try opening multiple servers and multiple tests in parallel

You can also set-up traffic-generator (more resource friendly UDP test)
if addresses are still - master (192.168.88.2) and slave (192.168.88.3)

in master device terminal paste:
/tool traffic-generator packet-template
add ip-dst=192.168.88.2 ip-gateway=192.168.88.3 udp-dst-port=0-100 name=test1
/tool traffic-generator stream
add mbps=900 name=str0 packet-size=1500 tx-template=test1

before each test refresh template by running:
/tool traffic-generator packet-template set [find]
and run test:
/tool traffic-generator quick mbps=900

this will create bi-directional (loopback) UDP packet stream.
More information available here:

Documentation is written by following KIS (Keep It Simple) design principles, it may not include in depth tutorials, but will be based on absolute minimum information to get users started.

Re: Performance Microtik Wireless Dish

Thu Jul 04, 2019 2:19 pm

Anton,

Effectively there are different equipment (switches and routers) between the wireless dish and the PCs or Macs.

Yesterday I did more tests and got a performance of 54MB / s with transfer of NFS files (v3 TCP) between two NAS Synology.

But the funny thing was that when I wanted to connect the NAS to each other through the NFS (v3 UDP) the connection did not come to occur.

For the tests I have done:

1) The quality of the signal fluctuates a lot from one day to the next. Yesterday signal80 / MCS8 and today signal40 / MCS4. The antennas are in the same position as yesterday.

2) It seems that there is some problem to transfer UDP traffic.

I will try this afternoon a simpler type connection:

PC (88.121) <==> Switch unmanaged <==> LHG60 (88.2) <------> LHG60 (88.3) <==> Switch unmanaged <==> PC (88.41)

and we will see what happens.

Would it be useful for you to send the configuration files of the two LHG60?

Regards, and thank you very much.

Now the signals and MCS of both teams are about 95/8 and the UDP traffic between both via Bandwith test I think is good.

Attached the graph.

Try this afternoon a simpler type connection:

Hello,

Now I just made a 20GB transfer of files between the two Macs via SMB protocol (Microsoft) and the performance was 56MB/s.

Half the theoretical bandwidth of the link.

I have nearly the same issue as you with the Wireless Wire Kit. It's a 88m link and UDP Iperf3 shows ~950 mbit/s TCP is about ~350 mbit/s to any device on the remote side. Honestly i expected to get also via TCP around 1 gbit/s, but it might be not true.

Signal is 90 and MCS 8. Bandwithtest between the devices is showing the full possible speed.

Dirk

Can you make a brief summary of your network connections to see if we can help each other?

Is your model the Wireless Dish LHG60?

Hi Dirk,

The only thing I see here is that the tx-sector-info of the Station has a bit / a lot of misalignment.

Another thing, AP and Station are in the same network segment (Class C)?

Do you have different networks on each side of the link (as is my case) or is it a single network?

Best regards,

Thomas

Since this morning the 88.2 has low signal and mcs.

I have changed from 58GHz to 62.640MHz and the signal has improved.

In any of the two frequencies and with different levels of signal and MCS, the transfer tests using SMB protocol continue to give 48MB/s

How is your LOS?

I tested the dishes with 200 meters on the street, good LOS. Point was I only used 1 meter high poles and couldnt get the throughput right. The links even went down sometimes. So, I just didnt account for the fresnel enough (the street was too close obviously). I placed the same dishes on rooftops now with good fresnel and they are running perfectly for months now. There is 500 meters in between and signal/MCS etc just doesn't change with any rain (haven't had snow yet). Using 58GHZ freq.

These dishes are used for a 200MBit uplink to a student house with 250 students. There has been continuous use on the link for many months now. No problems at all.
PS: I also used the link for a three day hackathon (simultanuous with students) with 800 people/1200 devices and had no problems with the link. At peak times (800+MBit/sec) the error rate would rise to max 4%.

About the short distance; I had the test-link running for two days at 7 meters. I did a TCP duplex throughput-test for two days continuously with an iperf3 thread with 120 streams. I did not loose 1 packet while also pinging the other side. Average throughput, after two days, on servers on both ends was 930MBit/sec, the max they could achieve.

So again, how is your fresnel and LOS with the dishes?

Hello,

I understand by LOS Line of Sight. It is perfect, without any obstacle.

With regard to the fresnel issue (I understand fresnel zone) here, there could be problems because I did not know this effect until you mentioned it.

The antennas are located 1.5 meters above the floor of the respective roofs attached to a side wall by a metal "U" support that leaves them about 15 centimeters from the wall and 1.5 meters above the floor. Tomorrow I will post pictures of the two antennas here.

On the other hand, during these days setting in the bridge interface

IGMP Snooping ON
DHCP Snooping ON
Add DHCP Option 82 ON
Fast Forward ON

and in bridge port 0 (Ethernet)

Unknown Unicast Flood ON
Unknown Multicast Flood ON
Broadcast Flood ON
Trusted Blank
Hardware Offload ON

It seems that the speed has almost doubled.

Today, for example, from a NAS on one end to a MacBookPro on the other I have transferred 300GB with SMB protocol with a performance of 83MB / s (61minutes) when before these changes the maximum obtained was 48MB / s.

I thank you very much for your interest in helping me. Tomorrow I will post detailed pictures of the installation of antennas.

Regards,

Thanks for the clear photos. Since your AP is aiming away from the wall and the STA (station) is aiming up, there shouldn't be a problem with the fresnel zone in this setup IMO. (since the fresnel for 60ghz is really narrow, especially for this distance)

But, I can't help but seeing that at least the STA is not perfectly vertical. Please check with a 'bubble level' if both dishes are perfectly vertical/horizontal mounted.
Please help the community by reporting back your findings. Thanks!

Goodnight,

The dishes are at different heights. The bridge is approximately 5m higher on the horizontal than the station-bridge.

I made the alignment with the small pointing accessory provided by Microtik. The data that I posted a few messages back obtained with "monitor" indicated:

bridge
tx-sector-info: right 0.2 degrees, down 1.4 degrees
distance: 71.73m

station-bridge
tx-sector-info: right 1 degrees, up 1 degrees
distance: 71.8m

For what I believe should not be misaligned. But hey, I'm new to this type of antenna and this frequency and maybe I'm wrong.

The tests that I continued to carry out today through SMB protocol transmission between a NAS and a MacBookPro have yielded 74.91MB/s and 74.33MB/s for transfers of 386.27GB and 418.11GB.

Now I will have to be close to a week without doing tests for office infrastructure issues, but next Tuesday or there I will return to the load. What I would like to investigate is whether the unicast, multicast, broadcast and blocking packages have something to do with the increase in performance and also how the link with iperf TCP behaves in both directions simultaneously.

Jellex, thank you very much and we keep in touch. If you need any more information or suggest or suggest an experiment, do not hesitate to ask for it.

Best regards,

The monitor command only shows you 2 out 4 possible angles, the aiming angles; left-right and up-down. These can be adjusted with the mounting brackets.

While mounting you should also account for the pole being perfectly vertical and thus the antenna itself should be vertical. Else your polarization will be off. This cannot be adjusted with the mounting brackets and you should adjust the pole itself or tweak the antenna mount a bit so that the antenna is vertical.
Your STA doesn't seem to be vertical, looking at the two upper bars of the antenna, you see?

(I'm also quite new with these antennas so I'm looking for others who are testing them out, thanks for sharing!
In two weeks I'll be mounting another pair over 330 meters. I'll post an update on those)

Hello,

Okay. I have already understood the vertical / horizontal polarization. I'll check in a couple of days and I'll tell you how they are.

Did you fix your problem?
I have fixed unstable connections with the LHG60ad by using other frequencies.
