Simple Wireless Bridge for a 50-100m point-to-point connection

Wed Nov 13, 2019 5:40 pm

Hi,

I use Mikrotik Switches, Routers and AccessPoints for quite a long time now, but have absolutely no knowledge about PtP wireless connections.
Recently I equipped the restaurant of my cousin with MikroTik Products (CRS328-24P-4S+RM, CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+ and six cAP ac) and CAPsMAN.
This works for about half of a year flawlessly and they are very happy with it.
Now the neighborhouse (holiday house) shall also get connected to the network. There are only 50m (max 100m) between the two houses and nothing between. But cable or glass connection is not possible.

So I thought of a wireless link but I am overstrained with the multiplicity of Wireless-Link products. Perhaps someone could help me please? Which products would be right?
- powered by PoE
- I don't want to mount a mast if it is not really necessary, so orientation adjustment should be possible without it. The mounting point is different height and orientation, so it should be possible to adjust both directions.
- line of sight is given
- distance between 30 and 80 meters
- connection should be rock stable
- small village, I don't think there will be Radar or too much foreign Wireless
- Germany (so, it must be legal to operate the devices there)
- money does not really matter (yes, it always matters, but what's needed or reasonable will be bought)
- weatherproof (snow, rain, sun, wind)
- future-ready (regarding bandwidth and so on)
- the equipment behind should integrate to existing network like there would be a cable between (capsman, userman, captive portal, same vlans)

Plan for the holiday house is:
- CRS112-8P-4S-IN
- two or three cAP ac

CCR is connected to some VDSL (I think 50/10), but in future perhaps this will become more and perhaps there should also be fast connection to a server in the main building.

Any more Infos needed? I am really overstrained.

Regards
Martin

For that distance i would use a 60GHz product...
Probably this one https://mikrotik.com/product/wireless_wire_dish

Wow, more massive than I thought to be necessary :)
But that's the reason why I ask :)

For 30-80m it seems like a total overkill.

I don't think, this one is weatherproof, is it?

Yes it is weatherproof, and ideal for this distance.

It will work like a charm...!
XVO you can have a look at this post viewtopic.php?t=128251...
This post is about the minimum distance of the 60GHz WAP and @normis says that works great from 1-150m... actually he says the minimum distance is even less than 1 meter.
So i do not think there would be a problem.
I personally use a wireless wire in a distance of 150-200m without any problems...

That is exactly what I'm talking about - Wireless Wire Dish, that you suggested, is waaay overkill, Wireless Wire will be more then enough.

Thank you, so weatherproof. But it seems not to be able to assign it downwards. And I did not find a spot diagram.
The mounting point of the main building is approx. 10-15m higher than the one of the holiday house. Are there really small masts that can be nicked or will it be no problem not to assign them at all?

The price difference of them seems to be neglible (200$ vs 300$) and the large one can be assigned downwards. The only point of critic could be the 40cm dish . Are there minimum distances for the larger one, too?

You can use something like this mount (no matter which one of the devices you choose): https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Antenn ... B002T0E91A

The Wireless Wire series also feature a phased array 60 degree beam forming aerial so they are capable of "looking" at another aerial. Consider the phased array as "eyes" looking up or down, left or right.

This is how the standard Wireless Wire AP can service up to 8 clients within a 60 degree area or the Wireless Wire Gx3 Model (with 3 arrays) can service 180 degrees..

So you may be able to mount flat on the fascia and not need a bracket at all if you angles within 30 degrees of centre.

This is the command to check performance once mounted:

/interface w60g> mon 0
connected: yes
frequency: 62640
remote-address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
mcs: 8
phy-rate: 2.3Gbps
signal: 80
rssi: -69
tx-sector: 36
tx-sector-info: center
distance: 117.96m

The smaller one. I agree that a 40cm dish would be overkill and it is also a massive optical factor.
The smaller one is nearly invisible if you don't explicitly look for it.

Nice you chose a 60Ghz product...

The dish looks better to me...

Well, perhaps for a technician. But not for a restaurant at higher level :)

I am still looking at the CCR1009-7G-1C-1S+ as the router for a restaurant???

Then he mentions overkill for a radio?

Oh sorry, did not know I had to justify myself for previous decisions :D

Please believe me when I say I know what I am doing.
The restaurant has also rooms, there is an office, there is no mobile reception at all.
Router does also firewalling and queuing.

And I repeat, there were no financial reasons for the smaller 60G. Would have also been bought for 500€ when it was the best solution.
But why should I blight the face of two houses with a 40cm dish when the small nearly invisible link also works perfectly?
Guests do not look into server rack and wonder if a hEX S would have been enough, but they look at the face of the restaurant when they arrive.
