Additional AP

Mon Apr 06, 2020 2:07 pm

Hi,

Today I have Meraki AC33 device got it free from my workplace. Its nice and reliable, but not enough to cover my 150m2 house.
So I was thinking adding another MikroTik AP (Initially taought about UniFi but that's over :P)

I saw there are two options:
1. wAP AC
2. cAP AC

I like the cAP AC 2 port so I can bridge it anywhere I need, however Seems like the wAP is more advanced Wifi wise (AC1600)

So few questions:
1. Which one would you choose today ?
2. I know both are not Wave2 certified, but are they MU-MIMO for example ?
3. I saw that Band-Steering is not supported, so how RouterOS handle single SSID for both bands (or it just doesn't)

I'm networking guy so I'll manage easily, especially after some Cisco LWAP configuration in the past :)

I have the capacs, but many folks will recommend ubiquiti. I have also sees the tplink eap 245 AC1750 recommended ( a step up from the capac ). I recently purchased one for the in-laws house but funny, not doing that now.
The advantage of capac is if you already have a MT router, then it makes sense to keep the same config process.

I used to have Unifi, and switched to MikroTik. In my home I have two cAP ac's and outside a wAP ac. I would choose the latter if I would have 3x3 clients, but I don't. So I choose the cAP ac's, the wAP ac I already owned. Though band steering sounds great, it is completely useless if you configure the radio power for both radios correctly: choose the 2G radio 6dB lower than the 5G radio. Modern device will prefer the 5G radio over the 2G radio.

So you mean that MikroTik is not as good as UI for wireless ?

If you know and understand MikroTik, it is the better option. However, there are situations to where MikroTik (circa 2020) offerings are not the best:

  • Over 50 clients per AP
  • 100Mbps plus data requirements per connected client

You will not get the fastest WiFi speed from current MikroTik hardware. In practice, this does not actually matter unless you're performing large data transfers over Wifi, in which case maybe you should consider an ethernet connection to those clients. And yes, you can't load up 500 devices on MikroTik hardware. I use both the wAP AC and cAP AC. The CPU usage on the cAP is much less.

MikroTik's firmware (RouterOS) doesn't support MU-MIMO. For WiFi I'd suggest to take a look at e.g. GWN7630 from Grandstream.

On amazon.ca the GWN7630 is not sold by Amazon itself, but by a third party seller who doubles the price.

Thats the german Amazon LOL. I suppose it would help to know what country the OP is from!

If you could point to a 7630 in Canada for $89 I would buy it just to try it.
