802.11n

Sat May 26, 2007 6:59 pm

Hi all
I have to deploy a WLAN for a scool whitch need to download video heavy files (up to 7GO) from a local server.
I think that MIMO technology (802.11n) can provide the right solution for this case. I found a Mini-PCI module based on atheros XSPAN technologie whitch can provide up to 300Mbps BW.
But i don't know if Mikrotik OS support this technology???

you are not going to get those listed speeds with anything..

what is your goal here? a full wifi network, or some kind of wireless point to point for sending big files?

yes the goal is a full wireless network.
Of corse there will be some APs plugged in a central switch.
there is this Mini-PCI module: http://www.unex.com.tw/web2/english/pro ... =DNMA%2D82
witch can provid up to 300Mbps with 3 antenna in using SST technology from Atheros.
The question is: is Mikrotik support 802.11n or not??
if not what is the alternatif for this case??

Hi,

USA MUM has concluded. But on the wiki there is no presentation related to 802.11n. Are there any information about the 802.11n demo somewhere?

Best regards.

Thanks for the reply.

I'd like to know if we can take advantage of this support of 802.11n on outdoor sites. For example, I think the most extended use of mikrotik routerboards and RouterOS is for outdoor aplications, point to point, point to multipoint and directional CPE. But on those instalations only one antenna is used ( 2 if nstreme2).

So, would mikrotik make a RIC and APs supporting n standard? would it be posible to make a PtP link with a pair or 3 pairs of antennas to get more bandwidth?

To resume, I'm interested to know if our routerboards could be provided with 802.11n cards or replaced with new routerboards when support will be included and benefit from the new capabilities.

Best regards.

why rb1000 dont have minipci??? it would be very very "strong" board.without it and without posibility to connect daughtboard from rb500 series it is only strong wired router.for this i think we can use pc hardware.its cheaper and stronger....

it's for a rackmount. why do you need an antenna in the server room? if you need similar power with wireless, you should be looking at RB600 and RB800

more information will be released a little later.

yes, you will be able to do dual nstreme with no problem.

about ethernet thoughput - the only thing that is limiting the maximum speed of RB333 is the ethernet port limitation (100mbit). you can do 300 mbit (3 ports) throughput with no problem. it's a lot faster than RB532 and it will not be expensive.

Normis, in your MT tests of 802.11n, what max PPS were you able to achieve? In MT's opinion, what is the max PPS of the 802.11n card?

It is quite improtant to know this, as our main interest in 802.11n is not mainly the NLOS. What we need is to increase the PPS capabilities of our Towers in order to be able to provide quality VOIP and video over IP services. We sell our services as fixed lines so NLOS is not an issue here. But, at least with fixed links, the QoS should be high.

Also, we intend to use 802.11n for higher speed backbone connectivity where packets from all towers are pooled, and high PPS capability is vital. Have seen many inputs in thios forum regarding 128kPPS being achieved on wireless links running on PC based systems. Yet again, I see contrdictions stating that the practical PPS capabilities of Atheros based cards is linited to 8000. Little bit confusing at this stage, and 8000 is way too low for numerous realtime VOIP Connections. Our VOIP manufacturers have requested a backbone of at least 30k PPS. Dunno if a Mikrotik solution is up to the task. But 8000 PPS surely is not.
