HAP AC Lite WIFI issue with CAPSMAN

Tue Jun 23, 2020 1:19 pm

Hi guys!

Got a small issue I can't find a solution for.

Setup:
Main router - RB3011 running CAPSMAN
3 xAPs - 2x CAP AC + 1x HAP AC Lite
- 2 x SSIDs, one for each band, manual settings of the channels so they do not overlap

Issue:
Roaming with an Android 9 phone between the CAP ACs works flawless but roaming from any CAP AC to the HAP AC Lite fails 50% of the time. The failure looks like this:
1. Client ( Android Phone) goes to bad signal from the CAP AC - > access list rejects it -> registers to HAP AC Lite on the same SSID
2. 50% of time the connection to the HAP AC LT gets an exclamation mark and nothing works (Internet, other devices in the lan). Within a few minutes (2-3) the exclamation mark disappears and everything works again.
- the other 50% of the time the roaming is fast with no issues.
- happens on both SSIDs
- never happened when roaming from CAP AC to CAP AC
- nothing relevant in the logs

You might say it's an Android issue but why does this not happen from cAP AC to cAP ac? Went through several SW versions, nothing changed.

Here is my capsman config:

Could it be a bug in the HAP AC Lite? Maybe different implementation of some protocol ( ARM vs MIPSBE)...
Any ideas?

I also have an issue with hAP ac lite and CAPsMAN.

Occasionally, iOS devices connected to this AP lose internet connection even though the device is connected and with good signal (more than -60). If the WiFi is switched off and turned on again, the devices rejoins the same access point and the internet access works without issues.

This never happens with the other APs managed by the same CAPsMAN. I tried various tips, like enabling WMM mangle rules on the AP, extending the DHCP lease, still no luck. It happens sporadically, but still it's annoying.

What RouterOS version are you running on all devices? Are all firmwares at the same version?
First the problem, then the solution

I'm running v6.47 (currently the latest stable) on all devices. Yes, also the firmware is the same on all devices.

Bitracer, seems our issues are related. Is your AP losing Internet for already connected devices or only when you roam to it? From what I can see, once connected to the AP and working I do not lose the Internet connection anymore, it's just when I'm first connecting (via roaming) that I see issues.

On my side the devices lose connection even though connection was established (and working) for some time. I can't confirm if this also happens as soon as devices join the access point, but it could also be the case.

Did you add to the logging "caps" topic, still nothing in the log?

I see the migrations from AP to AP, but the moment it happens nothing specifically. The device is happily connected to he AP, it's reporting strong signal, I see the device in the registration table in CAPsMAN, but internet doesn't work. I haven't tried device to device communication. This is something I can check next.

Turning the WiFi off and then on resolves the issue immediately, and other devices on the same AP exhibit no problems at that very moment.

@techlord Have you tried switching to 20MHz channel width for the 2GHz band (no channel extension)?

I did not try to play with that but I also see this on the 5GHZ network. Thinking of raising a ticket with support.

Re: HAP AC Lite WIFI issue with CAPSMAN  [SOLVED]

Mikrotik came back to me related to this issue. Apparently there is an issue with the software implementation around the switch.

It's been fixed in 6.48beta2 which is not released yet to the public:

The fix will be included in future public releases.

Great news! Thanks for chasing this.
Did you install it? Any issues? Wondering if it will have issues running with lower ROS CAPSMAN

Yes, I installed it and I'm testing it now. So far so good, no obvious issues. I installed it only on hAP ac lite, of course.

does this affect only hap ac lite?
i was having same problem when roaming on hap ac lite from main ssid to slave ssid. lost many hours trying to find why this was happening. i am at 6.45.9.
problem went away when instead of using local forwading, i use capsman forwarding.
can you test without local forwarding with 6.47 and lower please?

It's been few days now and the issue appears to be resolved. Didn't have any more connectivity issues when clients are connected with hAP ac lite AP.

I've tried briefly to route traffic through the CAPsMAN, that works too. I couldn't test with previous releases since I already upgraded the device to this release and didn't have time to fiddle with it.

Hi bitracer.
Wanted to confirm that my issues got resolved with that ROS version. Roaming is now smooth with no issues. The only (small) complain I have to Mikrotik devs is that all these newer ROS version do seem to write a LOT to the flash.

So thanks for sharing!
