WiFi poor performance

Tue Mar 02, 2021 7:03 pm

Hello.
I have an office with some mikrotiks, just 20 people.
Main router is a RB2011UiAS-2HnD (firmware version 6.48.1) with CAPsMAN enabled.
This router has 2 ISP (50MB and 30MB) in a simple failover setup (different distances)

CAPsMAN manage 6 AP:
an RB2011UiAS-2HnD,
two RB951G-2HnD and
three RB951Ui-2HnD (all of them with firmware 6.48.1)

All RB are connected to an unmanaged gigabit switch, using Cat6 cable.
I have two SSID (WORK and GUESTS) both on channel1 configured in CAPsMAN
I'm getting really slow performance over WiFi.

An Example: using my laptop wifi, next to the router, testing with speedtest.net site, I get between 5 to 10MB.
With my laptop, connected by ethernet cable directly to router, testing with speedtest.net site, I get 50MB.
With my android phone also get slow speed.

Any hint?
Should I split WORK and GUESTS SSID in different channels?
I analyzed WiFi channel rating and channel1 (2412) is best option. channel 6 and 11 are overcrowded.

Unfortunately, mikrotik is not suitable for WiFi anymore. We've been through this with many clients, and there have been problems everywhere. In my opinion, the Mikrotik company does not develop WiFi anymore, which can be seen in the changelog - there has been nothing about wireless improvements for a long time. There are many problems with operating at 2.4GHz and even 5GHz. One day at speedtest.net is 150Mbps and in a moment 15Mbps. Problems have been reported on the forum many times, unfortunately nothing has been done about it. I suggest changing to, for example, Ubiquiti Unifi and the problem will disappear.

Are you putting all those wireless access points on the same channel? In 2.4?

That would explain the crap throughput.

Thanks @gotsprings.
AP are far from each other. About 60-70ft one from another. It's a long building.
Didn't care about same channel

Will try to scan on every spot and change channels for each cap.

I would use a managed switch and use vlans for the work and guest networks.

As long as the WAPs are tagging... And the router has the VLANs
An unmanaged switch can pass that.

Ohh... And I have had real problems with the local router running caps-man and having a radio on caps-man.

So I don't use the radio on the main router... Even if it's the same as the other units in the install.

And lastly... These are all 2.4 radios... In 2021. After he started with how 2 channels were completely saturated.
