Is there a way to increase range/signal of cAP AC?

Mon Mar 29, 2021 5:25 am

Hi all - I have an hAP AC2 (router as CAPsMAN) + cAP AC (access point) for my home network. For some reason I'm unable to connect to the AP beyond 15 feet on both 2Ghz and 5Ghz bands (in which I do have clear line of sight of the AP).

This seems awfully low considering my really old netgear router has a farther range at 2Ghz band compared to the cAP AC. I've used different client devices (iPhone 10, Macbook pro, and Samsung S10) but receive the same results. Within 15 feet the AP seems to do just fine.

Can I do anything to increase the range of the cAP AC? I'm not too sure if this related to TX power, or something else. I've left most settings as default for the cAP AC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated; thank you so much.

Try this: /interface wireless set [find] antenna-gain=0
What country are you in?

In most cases the transmit power of the client is the limiting factor, not the transmit power of the AP.

Mostly AP's transmit near the max allowed power (20 dBm/30 dBm), however laptops, tablets and smartphones have a lower (14 dBm) to much lower (10 dBm) transmit power.

The (real physical) antenna gain plays an important role in amplifying the received signal. The transmitted signal (power + antenna gain) will be limited by the country regulation (EU = 20dBm), based upon the antenna gain value entered. (FCC even allows up to 30 dBm, the client device remains the weakest link)

Maybe just read the actual values, in "registrations" (tab in RoS wireless), of signal strength, CCQ, and the resulting interface rates "Mbps-MHz /S/SGI".
It's better than just guessing what happens.
If the basic interface rate still is left at 6 Mbps, you should get further than 15 feet.

I agree with erlinden, playing guessng games is a waste of time, post your config so we can see all pertinent settings.
