SXT5 NV2 "lost connection, synchronization timeout"

Sun Apr 11, 2021 10:51 pm

Hello Everyone,

I'm Using two SXT5-Lite to connect my network with my neighbour. Distance: 30m; Direct Line of sight.
It worked for about 3 years, but in the last few month, we have a lot of disconnects and the connection drops for about 30-40 minutes. The same configuration works on another site since 2016 without any problems.
Today I added a watchdog on the neigbours side to minimize the downtime - but I'd be happy to find the root cause instead of constantly rebooting.

The errors are always the same:
(on the neighbours side SW16-SXT5-Dach):

Re: SXT5 NV2 "lost connection, synchronization timeout"

Mon Apr 12, 2021 12:09 am

As I found in another post, I added logging for "wireless, debug"
I configured this logger on one side to memory instead of disk, but on SW16 it worked:
~Connection broke at around 20:16 (i think);
I immediately checked SW15:

Shouldn't the watchdog timer trigger earlyer?? "/system watchdog set auto-send-supout=yes watch-address=192.168.99.1"

While you might get upset about watchdog not triggering you really should adjust list of allowed frequencies so that "master device" (sw15) doesn't select a DFS frequency by setting skip-dfs-channels=all ... even if reboot occurred earlier it could still happen that sw15 selects a DFS frequency and later detect radar. It would again re-select frequency and whenever AP selects DFS frequency, it has to wait and scan for radars for certain amount of time (1 to 10 minutes).

You should also set master (sw15) wireless interface to installation=outdoor because that's what it is.

Done - but shouldn't DFS=ALL be set by my regulatory domain? Why is this important? Should it be enabled on both - master and slave?
wow - but this didn't work as planned.
As soon as I activated it:
08:55:57 wireless,debug wlan2: must select channel
08:55:57 wireless,debug wlan2: radar reported on 5500000
08:55:57 wireless,debug wlan2: failed to select channel
You should also set master (sw15) wireless interface to installation=outdoor because that's what it is.
Both SXT are set to outdoor - I changed to indoor and back, but it is still not visible in the export file. I think, because it's default.

Default is to use all channels feasible. The lsit depends on a) regulatory domain, b) selection of indoor vs. outdoor vs. any . The problem with DFS channels is (as I already hinted at) is that when AP chooses to use DFS channel, it needs to scan for radars (it has to be silent during that) and that can take 1 minute or 10 minutes (depending on particular channel). After AP chooses such channel, it needs to monitor it for any sign of a radar and if it detects a radar, it has to stop transmitting at once and select another (radar-free) channel. If you are affected by radar detection frequently and you're annoyed about it, then you better configure AP not to use DFS channels.

The important setting is on AP (master of bridge). It's AP which does channel selection, it's AP which does monitoring for radars. Slave (client) only follows master. Hence it's best to leave client to as wide configuration as possible and make master as specific as desired.

Hmmm ... looking at wireless info for austria it seems that there isn't any non-DFS outdoor channels in austria?

Which means automatics won't work nicely, you'll have to construct channel list manually (use scan-list=... property of wireless interface). You could start off with full list and then remove channels which your AP detects to be affected by radar. Note that when AP detects a radar, it's not always a real radar, quite often there are false positives. Which affect the channel selection nevertheless.

You should also set master (sw15) wireless interface to installation=outdoor because that's what it is.

Both SXT are set to outdoor - I changed to indoor and back, but it is still not visible in the export file. I think, because it's default.
Could be it's default for SXT indeed.

Thank you for your explanation - I will try this in the evening when the kid's don't need the internet for home schooling.
And now the watchdog seems to work (i didn't change anything) and thanks to debug, wireless logging to file I get a complete picture:

So the master detects a conflicting RADAR as you already said and chooses a new channel. Without the watchdog, the slaves stays on the wrong channel until he gets a timeout. Then rescans and connects properly.
With the configuration "DFS=all" it detects radar on 5500, but tries to stay on it, so there could be a problem with my frequency list.

Re: SXT5 NV2 "lost connection, synchronization timeout"

Update: Country=Austria + FrequencyMode=regulatory-domain + SKIP DFS Channels=all --> not possible, because then no frequency is left!
My ScanList is "default"
According to the Austrian regulations the frequency "5150 – 5350" is allowed for indoor and "5470 – 5725" up to 1W with DFS+TPC.
Today I had the problem, that the master didn't find any free frequency for nearly an hour?
As the two APs are directly looking to each other - why not change to indoor and lower power? This would disable DFS if I understand correctly?
Or: change to a custom scanlist - but how could i determine the right one? There seems to be a device with inproper configuration interfering with my ptp connection.
or: change from austria to no-country and setting a correct scanlist. Frequency Mode superchannel is not allowed with country=Austria.
