300 Clients 1 Ap, its possible?

Fri Aug 03, 2007 10:39 pm

I'm planing to buy a 532A, with a xr5, and an omni antena.

How many clients can I ve with this cfg?

The node will be in the center town.

What do you suggest?

Thank you.

I have heard that 10 to 20 (based on load) is a more realistic number of clients per AP.

I am not sure if it is a hardware issue or a RF issue...

I cant remember where, but I belive this has been batted arround on the forums before..

Try some searches and you will come up with many threads with people much more knowlageable than I on this one...

This question can never be answered, its too general

You could get 200 on 1 AP but as long as they downloaded each only 1gig per month at 128k +/- (old people home?)

Also, with that many people what if one has interference? you will need to change channel and another 4 have interference.

Normal is 30 - 60 per AP, for me this runs fine with 3gig per month each at 1024kbps (normal for australia)

if you was at a School perhaps only 20 users per AP

I use 2ghz, 10mhz

Best for that many, user 4x sectors on 2ghz 10mhz (or 5mhz)

:-)

I will use 5.8ghz

I dunno if 4 90° or 3 °130, RB532A supports 4 XR5?

I want to provide just internet temporary till the cablemodem network is done in 2008, and it will work for clients that doesnt work with cablemodem

You should use 3 120 degree sectors and according to figures you could put 3 R52H's with the RB502 board added on the RB532A R5 unit and work just fine. I would use a 48 volt 1 amp power supply for this as well. This will help make sure nothing is under powered. I think this setup would work just fine. The amount of customers you are talking about depends more on how much bandwidth you are wanting for each customer and how heavy of users you will have. I have put as many as 70 on a 2.4 ghz radio but this isn't a very good idea. Hope that this helps.

I've babysat a number of 532 based AP's, and while they did better than the 230's, they still didn't have the power to keep up with more than 50 users, roughly. Even then I disabled things like connection tracking, we used /26 real IP on the wireless side so I didn't need CT for NAT. No firewall rules to speak of and no queues. The whole 532 was dedicated to just routing packets between the real IP subnet on the radio to the real IP on the ethernet.

300 per AP is not a realistic number.

for 300 clients, I'd break it up into 6 x 60degree sectors using a combination of Vertical and Horizontal Polarization.

That or go with 4 x 90 degree sectors in the 5.8 band, and 4 x 90 sectors in 2.4band.. Maybe throw a 900mhz omni in the mix to get people who are very close to AP (might be able to do NLOS installs with indoor CPE's)

Basically you need more power to service that many subscribers.

And omni antennas don't offer much for distance so unless all 300 of those subscribers were less than a mile away w/ perfect LOS you'd have a hard time getting them a quality signal.

Look into dual band antennas that will service 2.4/5.8 off the same sector. this will reduce your equipment needs by half if you're to use both bands.

A 532 can handle 300 clients?

Try this. RB112 or 133 with a single RB52 radio per sector antenna. 3 120degree 2.4ghz antennas and 3 120degree 5.8ghz. This will give you 6 sectors, 50 users per radio. Connect all of it to an X86 box running RouterOS license level 5 or 6.
