WPA3 in September?

Sun Jul 04, 2021 10:07 pm

Hi, will RouterOS support WPA3 in September? That's probably when Apple will release iOS 15 with WPA3 support. So I'm gonna need it by then I assume.

It already does, in RouterOS v7.

Good to know, thanks. As far as I can see, RouterOS v7 is in beta, though. So maybe then the question should rather be, will RouterOS v7 be stable in September?

Probably not. My own guess at the rate they have been going would be around mid-2022. However, they are supposedly stabilizing individual device models on RouterOS v7 one at a time, so a certain device may have a "stable" release before the general one. It is the OSPF and BGP routing and routing filters that are the big to-do's delaying the stabilization of RouterOS v7.

I'm not an Apple user, but many iPhones, iPad, Macbook and iWatches do connect to the MT AP's. So I'm curious on the "need" to have it.

Looking at comments on the internet, this IOS 15 update seems to bring WPA3 to the "Personal Hotspot" of the Apple devices. WPA3 on its own (as client?) should have been there a while already.
The MT as AP has normally no connection with the "Personal Hotspot" of the Apple devices, however it could be used as uplink for a MT.
But I understand that WPA3 is backward compatible with WPA2 devices. So nothing to worry ??

See "September"... Doesn't specify a year. Like say 2030.

The use case is indeed, the MikroTik router is operating as a wireless station and is connected to an iOS device's hotspot for getting access to the internet.

In case it's gonna be backward compatible it should be fine. I'll see.

Would be nice to have this feature in the testing branch, I don't see why I need to deal with ros7 to have something that's been out for months

Because it is likely impossible. RouterOS 6 uses a kernel that is 10 years old. RouterOS 7 uses a kernel from last year. Probably the kernel from 10 years ago is too old to have any hope of supporting WPA3 without some serious development work.

Never had any problem in years. Three different iPads of different generations, iPhones for the whole family (older and newer models), two iMacs, two MacBooks… MT does not have a ‘general’ connection problem with Apple, as much as other vendors. Saying this sort of things without precise details is misinformation. :)
